Wonder if we can ever convince FFA to get mass smoke machines like they use @ Portland Timbers as a way of curbing the want for flares? -PB

-PB The MLS does controlled pyro pretty well. Vancouver use heaps of fireworks and other such things. But the also have a sweet pre game walk out. It's very Frinchise-American, but everyone loves it, and it gets you so jacked up for the game. Terrible video and a terrible crowd, but in a full stadium it's sweet. The whole notion of replacing flares with club/FFA controlled smoke or fireworks is pretty cringe worthy imo. Flares are usually a tool of celebration or used to improve displays and why anyone would want that being controlled by the suits is beyond me. Regardless, they won't work as a replacement; flares will still be regularly lit. Supporters aren't mindless retards who blindly follow.

-PB I can see them being expensive to run. Timbers are a team with a strong turnover (better than majority of the A-League teams at any rate) and thus pyrotechnics and smoke machines are more affordable for them. I think you're also discounting the appeal of the subversive nature of flares.

You can't possibly support a team you've never been to the game of. So I'm not a Packers fan, not a Liverpool fan, and not an atletico fan, I don't actually follow any team despite owning the merch and watching the games every week on tv. By your definition there are only 45,522 Liverpool fans and 75,811 MAXIMUM on any given week. How absurd

Sitting on your arse in front of the tele in your official replica jersey doesn't make you special. Going to games, immersing yourself in the match day experience and contributing is what I'd consider as someone who genuinely cares for their club. Anyone can pick up shitty sponsored plastered merch and call themselves a fan.

I go to Wanderers games, but I'm a Glory fan because I live in Sydney... I've been on a tour of Ewood Park and I'm passionate about The Rovers, but I live in Sydney and therefore cannot go to their games. I used to be a Vancouver Whitecaps member, but I no longer live in Vancouver, yet I still follow the team. Am I a fan of nothing? Also, do this mean that Aussies living overseas, Perth, Darwin or Tassie cannot be socceroos fans because they don't get to see games?

Believe it or not, it's actually possible to support a team that isn't located in the city in which you live.

It's not necessarily about where you live, it's more about the commitment you have towards the team you support. Living in another city of course makes it pretty fucking bizarre that you'd follow a team from somewhere else unless it's a team you've committed at least some part of your life to. I guess there are genuine reasons such as being brought up by parents to follow teams but nothing fucks me off more than cunts who pick some random foreign team and decide they're gonna support it.

KiwiChick1 wrote:Believe it or not, it's actually possible to support a team that isn't located in the city in which you live. I still believe you should have some connection to a football team beyond just watching them win a game on a given day. Yet, I'm not an Arsenal supporter because of my family, who were ultimately split Arsenal/Tottenham anyway, I don't support Arsenal because I was born close by and lived for some near there - I didn't know that at four years old. I'm Arsenal because I went to my Aunt's house (on my Mother's side, who doesn't even like football and isn't 50/50 Arsenal/Tottenham) at four years old, and I saw all my cousins, older than me of course, and they were all wearing Arsenal shirts when I met them. I didn't become a gooner because I wanted to support my local team, or follow the family, I became Arsenal because I looked up to my cousins and I wanted to be like them. It was just chance. If it wasn't for that, I'd be Tottenham with my Dad.

Odd question. Seems to imply that once you support a local team, you're not allowed to move to another city.

So you can only be a supporter of a team if you've been to one of their home games? Seriously?

Imo makes you more of a fanboy than a supporter. People support teams for reasons other than arbitrarily picking them out from the Matchay Program you know. Peoples have relatives who played for the team, or family that grew up in the city and have always supported the team, they might have been raised to support the team. You accuse me of having 'zero idea' about this, but ironically it's you who's completely clueless and shooting your mouth off. You've got no right to judge anyone's motivations and reasoning for supporting a club. Much less deride these fans, many of whom keep YOUR club afloat. Furthermore, unless you yourself live within a 5 minute walk of Hindmarsh Stadium and have been to every single home game Adelaide have played over the last 10 years then you yourself are a hypocrite. tl;dr: Fuck off Ducky.
