How does reading the bible rule out the worship of Krishna as the correct God? Absolutely ridiculous.

See comments like that just make it hard to take you seriously. I'm not a Christian, but anyone can look at your comment and realise that reading the bible may rule out Judaism and Christianity as monotheistic religions (which is ridiculous, but i'll humour you) but it won't do much to rule out the existence of a God.

He's right though, once that seed of doubt hits nothing confirms that doubt like reading the bible from cover to cover with a critical eye.

Most ministers will hand select a verse or chapter to match the theme of their weekly sermon and ignore the more contentious bits.

I'd love to meet the numerous people who've read the bible cover to cover who aren't Christians.

You'd love to meet most ex-Christians?

It's an ever-growing demographic, so you'd better get busy.

When you read the bible you realise, among other things, that god is a construct of the human mind.

I'd say the growing demographic isn't ex-evangelical Christians. Maybe Christians my token, but not much more I wouldn't say.

@U44 you cannot realise that 'God' is a human construct by reading one book, that's simply ridiculous. How does reading the bible rule out the worship of Krishna as the correct God? Absolutely ridiculous.

Every society in history has created god/s as a means to control the masses and to explain the natural world. They have often done this through the creation of "religious texts" or "tablets" that claim to be the word of a deity. Reading them, you realise they are the construct of insecure jealous men who have created a god with human like emotions and qualities. They are all the same.

This is so obvious. You only have to look at the new religions like mormonism and scientology to realise how ridiculous they are. They are clearly created by charlatans.

As Richard Dawkins once said. "You know what its like to be atheist about the 3000 other gods created over the last few millennia, atheists just go one god further."

Whilst it is still possible that an intelligent entity created the universe (I can't disprove this claim), it clearly wasn't any of the ridiculous claims put forward by religion, as not only is there no evidence to support their claims, there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Sorry if anyone finds this offensive, but I can't be the only one who thinks this.

To be fair I don't see much wrong with that tbh, I went to a religious school and we were never taught to view the Bible as the universal and literal word of God, but rather to recognize that it was written by many scholars and religious figures over the years, and as such were encouraged to identify with which ever elements that stuck with us whilst rejecting those that didn't.

FWIW I don't believe in a God or anything but I was raised a Catholic and attended Catholic schools throughout my life so I still consider myself Catholic even if I don't attend to Church or subscribe to the core beliefs.

Of course, I don't have any problems with ministers cherry picking to match their themes. Just saying that an in depth critical read of the bible in its entirety is great for confirming that seed of doubt when it comes.

Out of interest, do you call yourself a Catholic on the census?

There are some great examples out there of how some verses have evolved over time - I'm on my phone now so I can't find the exact verse, but there is one that was originally something like condemning laziness and indecision in men, which turned into being effeminate, which turned into hating faggots.

Yep I'm the same as EG. Went to a Christian primary AND highschool (both different organisations), and both never taught about the bible in a literal way. In fact the teachers would openly reject the parts that obviously don't apply to today's modern times. I was brought up to cherry pick stories from the bible. Pretty much all Christians realise it's not meant to be taken literally.

This is why I find it hard to understand the hard-line approach Muslims have to the Quran. Just because having a pet dog and eating pork was bad thousands of years ago in the middle east, doesn't mean it is here and now.

That awkward moment a catholic or protestant realizes they've been fed misleading Christianity

The real organic preserved Christian Church is Eastern Orthodox. If your so called priests couldn't read the New Testament in original Greek, or follow the traditions from the early Greek councils that created the church - then you can be pretty sure you've been fed a highly processed genetically modified version of Christianity. It's amazes me more "westerners" can't see this.

Greek not Hebrew? Didn't realise all those guys in NT were Greek.

Where is this New Testament that hasn't been translated? Can only assume the collections of books are locked away somewhere?

Atheism is not the conclusion that there is no true god, it's the conclusion that there's no good reason to believe that there is.

The concept of the existence of a "god" is unfalsifiable, exactly in the same way that Bertrand Russell's flying teapot is.

U's assertion holds true. The best way to turn a christian into an Atheist is have them read the bible cover to cover.

This is actually a common argument against Atheism by Theists.

As the bold part says. I dunno if Fredsta can, but to be perfectly honest I can't give a succinct reason as to why. Maybe because being part of the church is hardly any imposition on my life and I feel little malevolence towards the church. Their school system also gave me a good education.

Depending on your definition of intelligence, that's true. If you are making a comment on how it's impossible to receive a good education from a catholic school, I think you may be surprised about how secular the syllabus is in those schools outside of the religious "education" (I put that in quotes as those classes were never taken very seriously at either my primary school or high school).

I went to a catholic boys school and at times you would have hardly known it was a religious school  well apart from the priests walking around and the chapel in the middle of the school. At no point during my high school years did I open a bible

This country has a distinct lack of high quality private secular schools. The scenario above is all too common. Non religious people baptising their kids just so they can get a decent education.

So by that do you mean private schools without any religious affiliation ? If so, I agree.
