'We're sick of fat people whingeing'

FAT people are exactly like dole bludgers. They complain, whinge and take everything they can for free without taking responsibility for their health.
That’s the bold view of Julius and Sharny Kieser, the Queensland-based personal training team, who are also husband and wife, who run a dynamic health and fitness business focused purely on benefiting people who are already fit.

“We’re sick of fat people complaining and moaning about their weight, like they are victims. There is a small proportion of obese people who genuinely need help. The problem is the other group of people who are fat and lazy; who just take advantage of all the help that is out there because they think they deserve it,” said Julius.

“Twenty years ago it was mean to point out the one fat kid in the class, because he or she genuinely had a problem. But now, 80 to 90 per cent of us are overweight if not obese and it’s become un-PC to say anything about that.”

Julius believes there is now even a backlash against fit people. So instead of fat people being made to feel awkward, he says that fit people are often made to feel bad about making their health a priority.

“Bad health is one of the worst things you can have, probably our most poignant problem in the world today,” Julius says. “That said, having a drug addiction and poor financial health are probably just as bad.

“Fit people can be influenced by the people around them. As they steadily choose to live a healthy life they can become side-tracked by the people closest to them, like their husband or wife. We give them advice and tips to help them keep going on the healthy path. Hopefully this will widen the gap so that they’ll eventually inspire other people around them to live healthily too,” said Julius.

Athletes and CEOS make up the bulk of the couple’s clientele and both present unique training challenges.

“Fit people aren’t all size eight, they come in all shapes and sizes. Fit people come in all shapes and sizes; it’s about the part of the brain that they allow themselves to rely on. The’ fit’ part of the brain that encourages exercise and healthy eating and the ‘fat’ brain which is lazy and tells you not to bother,” said Sharny.

Time is the biggest constraint for people in high-powered positions.

“It’s common for CEOS that we train to be time poor, but we teach them how to be entrepreunial about their fitness. Instead of taking an hour out of your day, and conserving your energy throughout the hour, we encourage them to use intensity. Fifteen or twenty minute sessions where they are working at their peak,” said Julius.

The couple also focuses on reminding their clients that it’s not selfish to focus on making health and exercise a priority.

“When people are time poor they can feel guilty about taking time out from family to exercise, but the truth is if you don’t look after yourself, you cannot look after anyone else,” said Julius.

Julius and Sharny’s lessons for a healthy life

1. Don’t accept that you’re fat. "You should be uncomfortable about it, you should be ashamed about it. You need to do something about it."

2. Only you know your body, listen to it and trust yourself. Notice how certain foods and exercise make you feel and adapt them into your life or learn to live without them.

3. Realise that you are the leader in your life. Be inspiring to yourself and those around you by committing to your health and fitness goals. Give them everything you have got.

4. When it comes to diet, only change one thing at a time. Don’t try and cut out grains and sugar and alcohol all at once. Try one thing and notice the effect it has on your body before you take it on board long-term.

a controversial topic

is cigarette smoking an effective form of appetite suppression?

If you smoke, your sense of taste and smell is dulled. Thus nullifying that gnawing hinger a person has for 5 or even 6 meals a day
Another thing was sometimes people 'eat because theyre bored' if they smoked they can divert the boredom to smoke instead of snacking on fattening junk foods

I dont see smokers complaining they 'could eat half a goat'

The anti tobacco lobbyists would be outraged at this statement

but they would kill for a cigarette

hmmm...

Ugh, it's a touchy subject. Quite often there are underlying mental health issues at work that facilitate being overweight. Fat shaming isn't really the answer. Society needs to understand that being fat shouldn't be justified or applauded but that shouldn't give free license to shame others for being overweight. The more we accept obesity the more people will become obese, yet the more we criminalise it fat people will eat worse out of depression or guilt.

Agree that mental resolve is a big factor in weight loss, but a lot of people just don't have that level of strength. We value a frenetic, high stress society (especially in major cities) and this fuels fast food culture. I think more benefit could be found in regulating fast food outlets in the same way as bars and nightclubs are, and providing incentive for cheap natural food outlets to open. If we had more of a cafe culture where meals were relaxed affairs with friends and colleagues, prepared fresh rather than fast, I believe obesity would be much less of a problem.

Body health is an important issue for me, as someone who was once overweight (I lost 40kg over the course of a year and a half from mid 2006 to be at the lower end of my healthy weight range before building back up to mid/upper range) I am fortunate enough to have extreme willpower and stubbornness, and I lack an addictive personality. It was no issue for me to move to drinking only water and cutting sugars out of my diet (well the sugars a back now, but only once I developed an understanding of how to regulate my input and not over-indulge constantly) and to run until I felt I had to stop but force myself to keep going. Others can't do this though, they just aren't wired that way. For someone who can't relish taking the hard path, being healthy has to be made the easy option. I honestly believe it can be, in theory, but it requires a big shift in the way our society works.

The reason why there are so much more fat people is because of the way food has evolved in the last 30 years. 30 years ago you didn't have as much flavor enhancers and MSG and highly refined sugar which is the worst culprit. Food companies are large cooperation now and are only looking after their profits so what ever they can legally get away with they do. A lot of MSG's are chemically designed to make your brain crave more food.

Educated people know all this and make the correct purchasing choices at the super market where as a low income earner or someone below the threshold is likely to be more obese as these types of foods are cheaper and highly accessible.

To help obesity there really needs to be more eduction in schools with nutrition and there also needs to be stricter guidelines for big food cooperation to not chemically fuck with our brains.

The people in the article are cunts really because they are not looking at the issue from a broader perspective and just comparing themselves to fat people.

Sloth...its not just a health issue...we've become a bunch of fat little piggies, just about ready for slaughter by the BRIC nations

China especially has been up until recently feeding the Western world a whole bunch of cheap debt, making us lazy and consumption orientated...we dont even produce much anymore...dont worry piggy, here have another welfare cheque, pork chop and plasma tv!

Oh well at least here in Oz we have direct currency convertability into yuan...the USDs days as the worlds reserve currency are numbered...hopefully the new reserve will be backed by something more than fiat paper.

China and Russia are more capitalist and hard working than the US and Europe so at least thats something...fingers crossed we become more than just a glorified mine/agriculture plantation...oink, oink...stay on the couch piggy, we have 457s to pick up the slack...

this part really hit home for me.

atm i'm training for football twice a week, playing football once a week, playing ultimate frisbee once a week, running every night & the occasional game of basketball/fifa street. i'm getting back to my finely-tuned athletic machine specs, and am feeling good. but what i'm finding is my mrs, my family, my coworkers etc - they're stuck in their usual rut and aren't getting fitter/healthier/skinnier, and they're making me feel shit for getting a step-up on them. while i know it's purely jealousy, getting made to feel bad for me feeling good about myself makes me feel a little shit. and i'm not going around saying "check out my 6 pack, it's back!" - they're just noticing and telling me to calm down.

some of the rest of that article is a little heavy-handed (excuse the pun) imo

I'm sick of self-righteous arseholes telling other people how to live.

Who do these douchebags think they are?

And there's anti-fitness sentiment? Get your hand off it. Everywhere you look there's some kind of fitness/weightloss dross being pushed down our throats.

For the record I'm a shorter, skinny guy who actually struggles to put on weight, but I just feel so bad for bigger people when they're constantly facing this sort of stuff. Not sure why these wankers feel they need to abuse others because they dont fit their idea of what a person should be or look like.

Shows like The Biggest Loser disgust me, not because there are fat people on it, but because they treat these people like they are sub-human creatures that should be ridiculed or pitied. There are so many reasons why people are fat. Mental, physical and sometimes their bodies are just more prone to being larger. People who just say "oh it's your own fault, you have no self-control and are disgusting" really have NFI.

For a lot of people there's a lot more to it than that.

And that's not really my point - my point is there's no need to treat fat people like shit. But somehow that's become ok.

Why? What's so funny about it?

I'm so fucking sick of the attitude that if you're fat it makes you less of a human being.

If anything, it makes you more of a human being.

Seems to be a hell of a lot of ignorance on this topic.

It's not just lack of discipline or mental issues that can make someone prone to being overweight.
Biologically some people are just hard-wired to desire high energy foods constantly (to varying degrees obviously).

It wasn't such a problem in the past because we didn't have such ready access to high energy processed foods.

I'm a little bit too skinny if anything and I can tell you it's not because I'm disciplined or mentally stable that I'm fit. It's largely because I'm lucky enough not to have such a strong biological desire for high energy foods.

The other side of that is that it then gives people who are legitimately lazy the chance to go "It's not my fault I'm fat, it's genetic". No it's a cultural problem of inherent laziness in your family, you dick.

Yes, I think that's why people are so ignorant to it. No one dares spread this fact because it can only be detrimental to fat people and stop them from trying.

On the other hand It's clearly possible for people like this to lose weight and keep it off. It just usually requires them to be almost obsessive compulsive all day everyday to keep it off.

i always was under the impression that up to 25 was in the "healthy" range.

i just calculated my bmi then. i need to lose 8-10kg to be considered in the healthy range. i'm near the fittest i've ever been, and i legit have at max 2 kgs i could potentially shed - even when i was getting payed to play football i was roughly the same weight i am now, it's just my frame. i don't think the bmi calculator is an accurate indicator for tall people tbh (6'3" over here, watch out kc's alpha ).

BMI has long been proven as utter horseshit and in no way an empirical method of accurately gauging body health. I'm also 6'3" and when I got down to the lower end of my "healthy range" according to BMI I was dangerously thin and weak.

Extreme obesity the new normal
April 12, 2013

Amy Corderoy-Health Editor, Sydney Morning Herald

Morbid obesity is on the rise. Photo: Jim Rice

Extreme obesity has increased to the point that people are losing sight of what a normal weight actually is, health experts say.
Morbid obesity, the highest scale of obesity, increased by 68 per cent between 1997 and 2008, a study of women living on the east coast of Australia has found.
The study found overall obesity levels increased by 30 per cent, in what doctors say is part of a nationwide weight gain.
Public Health Association of Australia president Heather Yeatman said messages about healthy eating and exercising more were falling on deaf ears because many did not even realise how risky their weight was.
''I think that people are not really aware of what normal weight is any more,'' Associate Professor Yeatman said. ''If you have got 60-plus per cent of people overweight or obese that has become normal viewing these days, not only for children but for parents as well.''
Professor Yeatman said people were sick of hearing about weight, and many did not even realise messages targeted them.
''We need to focus on the positive things people can do … the fact that everyone needs to improve their diet, eat more sustainably and improve their exercise,'' she said.
The researchers, from Deakin University, measured the height and weight of nearly 1500 women who participated in the Geelong osteoporosis study, avoiding the problems of inaccurate knowledge that often plagued researchers who simply asked people how much they weighed.
It found morbid obesity had increased from 2.5 per cent of the population to about 4.2 per cent, or just under one in 20 people.
Morbid obesity is defined as a body mass index of 40 or higher, and is linked to far higher risks of problems such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Overall the study found nearly 30 per cent of participants were obese in measurements taken between 2004 and 2008, compared with 22.5 per cent of people measured between 1993 and 1997.
Study leader Julie Pasco, the head of the epidemiology unit for musculoskeletal and metabolic disorders at Deakin University, said the patterns seen in her study were likely to be occurring across the country.
This shift, which was not restricted to people of a particular age or socio-economic status, could indicate the whole population was shifting towards a greater risk for obesity-related disease.
On Thursday Obesity Australia launched a five-point plan to deal with the obesity epidemic. It included giving the parents of young children more information, expanding the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Programs in primary schools, and restricting television advertising of fast foods and high-sugar drinks.

Sorry, skipped past this before. BMI is 20 :?

Isn't that normal?

i always was under the impression that up to 25 was in the "healthy" range.

i just calculated my bmi then. i need to lose 8-10kg to be considered in the healthy range. i'm near the fittest i've ever been, and i legit have at max 2 kgs i could potentially shed - even when i was getting payed to play football i was roughly the same weight i am now, it's just my frame. i don't think the bmi calculator is an accurate indicator for tall people tbh (6'3" over here, watch out kc's alpha ).

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2264964/Tall-people-overweight-thought-youre-short-stay-New-Year-diet-little-longer.html

apparently other tall people know my feels, and a "new formula" has been made. i am definately NOT overweight, judging from these numbers #winning #tallpoppieseverywhere

BMI has long been proven as utter horseshit and in no way an empirical method of accurately gauging body health. I'm also 6'3" and when I got down to the lower end of my "healthy range" according to BMI I was dangerously thin and weak.

yeah for 1900mm tall you need to be around 88kg to be within the healthy range. since i was about 15 i've been this height and have always been hovering between 95-100kg. a couple of years ago for a couple of weeks i got sick enough to go into hospital & looked freakishly skinny & sick, and my weight went down to 87-90kg. so i agree it's horseshit - i have to look like i'm about to die due to sickness to be considered "healthy" according to bmi.

18.5-24.9 is the "healthy" range. BMI isn't a very good indication of much though.

I just calculated mine and apparently being 184cm and 87kg is 'overweight'. I've never thought of myself as 'overweight'. But the chart must be right, yeah?

So how tall and how much do you weigh, KC?

I know I'm going to get ragged on for this but I've created this bio for KC in my head. So the way I see it:
She's maybe ~5'6"-5'8" and fairly petit but got a good curve on her. She implies that she's 'fat' because she doesn't fit the Hollywood rolemodels and though she'd never suggest as much to her friends - partly because she knows better. She plays it up on here because it makes her feel better and satisfies her insecurities (not that I'm suggesting she's seeking attention. We're all insecure in one way or another).

She's a single child but that works for her. Competing for her parents affection is hard enough. They are career-oriented and love each-other, and the 'family image' is important to them. She doesn't have them smothering her too much but hey expect her to achieve for herself and her goals don't quite match their expectations. They want a lawyer, she wants to be a physio.

She's now trapped in the realm of the "cute girl" dating the egotistical dick. She'll either break up with him now or be with him for another year defending his exploits until he cheats on her and crushes every fibre of her emotive character.

It won't be for another 2-4 years before she realises where she stands. And moves to Australia.
