New Arts and Sports Precinct in Belmore

posted by on May 31, 2013

The Federal Labor Government will contribute $4 million towards the development of a new community arts and sports precinct in Belmore.

The precinct will comprise two new grandstands with capacity for 1,700 seats at Belmore Sports Ground, dedicated performing and visual art spaces and a two kilometre specially designed pathway linking the precinct to the town centre and public transport.

Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese and local MP for Watson, Tony Burke today joined Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg, Chairman Ray Dib and Tony Williams, and Chris Tsioulos, President of Sydney Olympic Football Club at Belmore Sports Ground to announce the funding.

“As the home ground of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Sydney Olympic Football Club, the Belmore Sports Ground is already well known and utilised as a sporting facility,” Mr Albanese said.

“This project will combine two of the community’s great passions - arts and sport - into a single hub in the heart of one of Sydney’s most multicultural areas. It recognises the region’s need for a flagship facility and the lack of dedicated multicultural arts facility.

“The new precinct will attract international events and more visitors to the region, boost the local arts scene and secure the future of the Belmore Sports Ground as key infrastructure for south west Sydney.”

Mr Burke said he was proud to deliver the arts and sports precinct for the Watson community.
“I have worked closely with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Sydney Olympic Football Club and Canterbury City Council over the last 12 months to deliver this new facility for Sydney and our local area,” Mr Burke said.

"This precinct has long been a home for multicultural engagement in sport. Now our diverse area will have a home for art, performance and music.

“This precinct will deliver the first multicultural arts facility for this part of Sydney and deliver jobs for locals engaged in the art scene.

“The project will provide employment primarily for local artists, but also administrators, support staff and technical personnel involved in mounting and staging exhibitions, performances and events.

“The Sydney region and in particular our local area is one of the most culturally diverse in Australia. We will now have a facility right in the heart of Belmore that will enable the sharing of all our different experiences to tell the story of our nation and our region.

“For generations people have travelled the globe to make a home in our part of Sydney. Now the Australian Government has shown a commitment to make this also a home for arts and sport.”

Funding for the Belmore arts and sports precinct is being provided through Round 4 of the Regional Development Australia Fund.

YOURE right about the money sutho make from their ground. as for the upgrade at belmore, it wont only be the youth playing there, once completed, all of olympics teams will be playing on peter moore field.

anyway, the only way to make money out of it would be to get symthetic but that aint gonna happen.

BELMORE BENEFITS FROM OLYMPIC MAKEOVER
MONDAY, JUNE 03, 2013
by Matt Greenlaw
Walking from the train station to Belmore Sportsground on a Sunday afternoon the first thing I noticed was the removal of the tired Sydney Olympic insignia on the stadium. It's been replaced with fresh Canterbury Bulldogs logos, but soon will also feature the Olympic brand once more.

Change is in the air at this historic venue and Sydney Olympic officials are abuzz with excitement over further plans for their prized home ground. With renovations to the main grandstand completed, focus is now firmly on the next stage of development.

A performing arts complex, multicultural arts venue, a second grandstand on the main field and a new grandstand on an existing training ground (Peter Moore Field) are among proposals by the club's board of directors, proposals that have already passed the first level of government planning.

The aim? To engage the local community in such a way that turns the stadium into a cultural hub for the arts as well as sport. The culturally diverse Belmore area includes indigenous Australians through to the many waves of immigration from every continent and the Pacific, and Olympic want the Sportsground to become a melting pot for artistic and sporting talent from all sections of their community.

Club President Chris Tsioulos was keen to show The Football Sack plans for the entire complex, and spoke excitedly about the project, which also will feature a pathway around the stadium celebrating the multiculturalism of the area.

For more information on the project, read the PDF proposal here.

Funny thing is that if the first grade boys get moved out to a fancy new Peter Moore Field, it still won't be good enough for the current NPL minimum requirements of 500 undercover seats and 1000 open air seats. There'll be 1000 seats with maybe 100 seats getting a bit of cover from the building above it.

Might have to go back to the drawing boards with this, or else Olympic will have to fund it itself, but that shouldn't be a problem considering the 5,000 people that go to each home match, they should be able to raise the money for grandstand coverage in about 3 weeks worth of gate takings...

Great development either way and congrats to Olympic on the improved facilities. The other clubs should learn from your lobbying skills in this department.

Dont see us making the 5 this season.

But i'll say its been 1 hell of an effort by the club to remain competitive despite 6 first team players walking out as well as the coaching staff, not to mention Demetriou leaving in a few days to trial with Nottingham Forest and Markovic leaving for Croatia last week.

Big game v Manly today, it will be tough.
