Wild brawl at St Albans soccer match leaves several people injured

BY:PETER ROLFE From: Herald Sun July 10, 2013 10:30PM

A WILD suburban soccer brawl at an amateur Melbourne match could see at least 60 players, spectators and match officials involved forced to take anger management training.

Victoria Police is investigating the St Albans brawl that left several participants seriously injured.

A father and son were among several people harmed in the mass melee that has been condemned by criminal investigators and the sport's governing body.

Football Federation Victoria is also probing the incident and threatened penalties, such as bans, suspensions, fines, point deductions and possible relegation of the teams involved if allegations are proven.

FFV chief Mitchell Murphy said it had received some reports about the clash, expected more and would consider forcing any player or official found guilty to undergo anger management courses.

"We are concerned to hear of the allegations raised and treat matters of misconduct seriously," he said.

"If the allegations are found to be proven, we are committed to ensuring that misconduct incidents are dealt with decisively."

The spiteful clash erupted in the aftermath of a 0-0 draw in the Victoria State League Division Three north-west clash between Sporting Whittlesea and North Sunshine Eagles on Saturday June 29 at Larissa Reserve.

About 15 police were called to the ground about 4.10pm and found a 19-year-old man and 54-year-old man with facial injuries.

Both men were taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed the 54-year-old man had teeth knocked out during the brawl and is considering legal action.

Police say the mass of at least 60 people involved fled when they arrived.

North Sunshine player and president Bes Kutleshi said at least one of the team's officials was assaulted and the club had reported the matter.

"We're working with police; I'm not too sure how it started but we're definitely investigating this and the club has taken its own course of action," he said.

A witness told the Herald Sun a Sporting Whittlesea club executive had also been bashed.

But Sporting Whittlesea executives did not return phone calls.

Police had not yet laid charges last night but said an investigation was on-going.

Police have appealed to witnesses, anyone with information or who knows the identity of people involved in the brawl to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

So negative articles about State League clubs get posted in Australian Football, and postive articles get relegated to the State League Football.

What's the rule here?

Whilst I hate the mod whinging, I see his point.
To put this in an Australian Football context, it looks horrible for our game. Has anyone in Melbourne seen or heard much about it from any media source?

What's the odds these two clubs will meet each other during the forthcoming FFA Cup or better still, seek promotion to the HAL?

Can't find any incidents involving South Melbourne (the only side currently seeking access to the A-League) - no problem, jump on a brawl from the 3rd division and claim that as justification for continued paranoia.

Let's ban Brazilians from hosting the world cup too - after all, there was a horrendous incident at ONE lower league Brazilian game last week.

The most mouth watering prospect is an FFA Cup game between SMFC and Preston that would probably be shown on national television and could potentially result in both clubs getting deregistered for bringing the game into disrepute, because the old ethnic differences between Greeks and Macedonians are just as strong and as bad today as they have always been.

Imagine watching something like this on national television one day. Australian football doesn't deserve it.

News was wanking in the shadows before they could turn the spotlight off their drugged up and brawled up alcohol fuelled fights. It took them ages to find it.

I'd advise not linking the articles to the original source, especially Peter Rolfe of all people.

I thought we were talking about present day... Didn't think it would take you long to dig out a video from years ago though. Should I put up some Victory-Adelaide rubbish, or the Heart king-hit to demonstrate that football problems still exist, or should we continue to revel in the darker moments of the past?

But the organised brawling we have today is ok because neither side happens to be aligned with any ethnic group

This type of senseless ethnic violence that is triggered by deepseated ethnic hatred that blackens the name of our sport, is usually seen in games between different nations or between clubs of different nations, not national league competition games like it used to happen in the old NSL or state league games like it still happens in Victoria, NSW, etc to this day.

The A-League does not have a violence problem based on ethnicity, religion, or skin colour. And for SydneyCroatia or Benjamin to suggest altercations between football fans because of some football rivalry is just the same as when football fans are being attacked because of their country of origin, or of the language they speak, or of the way they look, or of the religion they follow, or of the colour of their skin, is just disgraceful. Just plain disgraceful and appalling.

I'm 100% sure A-League addict that you'll find that rivalries are forged from whatever can be found. Ethnicity of supporters is one. The area the club located is another. Rivalries that are fierce are often the greatest. If you wish for a plastic league best start packing.

Mate.
