A suicide bomber has killed at least 16 people at a Russian train station on Sunday in the country’s worst terrorist attack for nearly three years, prompting Vladimir Putin to order a tightening of security at transport hubs ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics in February.

At least 40 others were injured when the attacker detonated an explosive device at the entrance to the main railway station in the southern city of Volgograd at 12:45pm local time.

Confusion swirled about the identity of the attacker on Sunday night, after security services told the news agency Interfax that the bomber “was a man who carried explosives into the station in a rucksack” at 12.15pm local time, and who had since been identified. However Russia’s top investigative body had earlier said that the attacker was a woman who detonated a device when a policeman challenged her at a metal detector at the station’s entrance.

The explosion of the device, said to be equivalent to 10 kilogrammes of TNT, blasted the building’s heavy metal gates off their hinges and caused carnage in the queue of passengers waiting to enter the building.

“According to preliminary information the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber who on approaching the line of metal detectors saw police officers around her, lost her nerve and detonated an explosive device including incendiary elements,” Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia’s Investigative Committee, said in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Putin ordered the country’s emergency services to be ready to fly survivors to Moscow clinics if necessary. Governor of Volgograd Region has declared three days of official mourning from January 1 to 3.

The attack - the worst in Russia outside the restive north Caucasus since a suicide bomber killed 37 people at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport in January 2011 - comes just six weeks before the Winter Olympics open in Sochi, and has refocussed attention on terrorists who have vowed to do their utmost to disrupt the games.

The attack bears the hallmarks of the Islamist insurgency based in the North Caucasus republics, whose previous high-profile attacks include the Domodedovo blast and a double suicide bombing on the Moscow metro in 2010.

In a video message released on Islamist websites in July, Doku Umarov, the self-styled leader of the North Caucasus Emirate, called on his followers to attack the Sochi Olympics.

There has been a report around that the Saudis threatened the Russians that if they tried to support Syria, the Saudis would unleash al Qaeda (and the Chechens, presumably) on the Olympics. If we do nothing about Saudi terrorism, the Russians may.

Yet Britain continues to give asylum to Chechen whackjob mass-murderer Akhmed Zakayev - the little charmer whose speciality is machine-gunning pregnant women in hospital maternity wards. He acts as the spokesman for Doku Umarov and the rest of the Chechen terrorist clan.

A few months ago the Saudi Bandar told Vlad he controlled the terrorist groups and could guarantee a terrorist-free Sochi if Vlad gave up Syria.

I don't keep stats on it and I don't pretend to. Google it, it happens.
Obviously it's not a government initiative but I for one recall girls being kidnapped and beheaded on the way to school.

Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Indonesia for starters. Google the rest.

Also look up Nigeria, Sudan and the Phillipines.

Facts aren't something you should be afraid of.

Seems like more than just Christians are being killed there, I heard of one or two Muslims getting killed in Syria, Iraq and Egypt, and the different religions in Indonesia are at each other on the regular.

I can operate google, but if you want me to buy into your persecution complex it's up to you to present links to support your argument, not me.

It's not just Christians being kicked out of those countries, people by their thousands are being forced to relocate regardless of their religion.

A recent German article claimed that Christians were the victim of 80% of religious discrimination and vilification, citing incidents in places like Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, etc. but the fact is while a large number of Christians in those countries are the victims of sectarian violence the numbers pale in comparison to muslim on muslim violence. They're simply the victims of the environment they live in.

No, it doesn't make it ok. Far from it. But you're trying to portray Christians as the victims and muslims as the "bad guys" who are persecuting Christians when that simply isn't the case.

And that's not ok either.
