Currently in the process of updating the OP with the scores, results, fixtures, and statistics. Sydney can't get crowds etc etc etc Why is that in blue text?

Because more people went to watch a third tier Jewish club play a club from the Gold Coast than to see an A League side.

I forgot about Lambaridis could be the important fill in for Brisbane Roar with Franjic gone. The style of play doesn;t suit Bowles, Brisbane seem light on the wings, and there doesn't seem to be a reserve for Brattan. Lustica is too lightweight to be trusted with a more defensive role. The A-league off season is like the Bermuda triangle, so many players missing.

Many of these players arent full time so they look worse than they are for that reason a year training full time and I reckon 20 npl players could make the step up and the a league would noticeably improve

There could have been 1,160 at Hensley, but SydCro is sick, and I bitched it because of the weather, having to travel out to Eastgardens from Uni, and then back to Balmain via public transport.

Edited by paulc: 20/8/2014 12:38:48 AM Not to mention the recycling of numerous Australian players that chop and change from club to club without ever really doing much on the field. We have such a small player pool that I think it's an issue, as it blocks new players from rising through the ranks, whether it be from state leagues or youth teams. Sometimes all a player needs is one chance to prove themselves.

3 of the 4 brisbane state league sides progress to the next round... has the standard of football up in brisbane gone up in recent years?

has the standard of football up in brisbane gone up in recent years? It's not all of the sudden. South East Qld has the second highest participation rate in the country. You can see how many young Socceroos are being developed from Qld. Some of this positive growth is being realized at the lower clubs as well as Brisbane Roar. Hence the necessity of another club or two for Qld if we want to increase the standard and capture the best talent for our national team that otherwise may not have been given the opportunity.

has the standard of football up in brisbane gone up in recent years? I'm not sure if it's increased over the last few years or not. The draw probably favoured the Qld clubs a little - no A-League opponents, Palm Beach vs 3rd Div NSW club and Strikers vs NNSW club. One thing I will say is that the QLD NPL is not the strongest it can be, but it will improve over the next few years. There are still a lot of great players who are playing in the Brisbane Premier League (long story - issues between Football Brisbane and Football Queensland), and the top sides from the two leagues are of similar quality. I sense a bit of shift though, and we'll see more of the top players moving to NPL clubs over the next few years.

has the standard of football up in brisbane gone up in recent years? Top of the table QNPL vs 3rd tier NSW Strikers vs second last NNSW side Olympic vs 8th placed VPL side FNQ smashed against 8th placed NSWPL side I wouldnt say it's an indication of the strength or improvement of QLD football.

Which just reinforces my point - you cant read too much into the quality of a league based on a few Cup results. I was just pointing out that the QLD sides did have quite favourable draws. You'd much rather be up against Hakoah from the 3rd tier of NSW football than Brisbane Roar or Melbourne Victory.

I aint to fussed about brisbane strikers, but the 97 final still haunts me

So much emphasis on position on ladder.......................means little in cup games. Further, the emphasis on the position of the ladder was just in reference to the question of whether QLD football has improved. It'd be silly to claim that QLD has improved in leaps and bounds because the Strikers beat a 10-man Broadmeadow who are struggling to get wins in their own league. Or because Palm Beach beat a 3rd tier side 2-1 QLD might have the best state league in Oz, it's almost impossible to judge something like that... but the FFA Cup results dont prove that.

I think Qld football has been splintered a bit and spread too far with similar quality teams and competition but with the NPL it might just concentrate the best players in one spot whereby other states already have a comp with this concentration.

Really excited about the Ro16 now. :) Hopefully we get a home game. If we do, I'd like to see it played at a suburban ground, somewhere like Kograh.
