As things always have been, foreign born players are significantly represented in the Senior game at grassroots level. Yeah, pointless having visa rules that far down the senior ladder, the argument of costing spots for developing local talent is obviously moot. I would argue that if 3 visa players is the rule for NPL, as Heiniken stated, then that rule should carry to A-League and all other teams entering the cup. I haven't read the FFA Cup rules but perhaps something is stated (as teams have brought in players or wanted to play visa players)? Edited by scott21: 22/7/2016 02:41:31 AM Why? Yarra Jets in Victorian State League 5 East have a lot of Somalian immigrants playing, and it's as wonderful a tool of social integration as football has always been in this country. These aren't remotely the level of guys stopping young Australian talent get quality development game time at higher levels, just kicking it with their team. Why kick them out? IMO it should be the same for every team. If there are immigrants than to me it is not an issue, they should be eligible . Well, this is Shamrock Rovers' Darwin team list for 2016. No idea of their residential, or citizenship status. I get the feeling the majority of the squad are Darwin locals. http://www.foxsportspulse.com/team_info.cgi?c=0-3008-162529-396250-23615236&a=PLAYERSEdited by Heineken: 22/7/2016 04:21:21 AM

For those among us who enjoy a cheeky flutter, some current odds for the opening match day of the Round of 32. I won't mention which betting company I'm taking these from, but let's just say they have very amusing advertisements. All odds are regular time results. FNQ: $1.57 Draw: $4.33 Edgeworth: $4.50 Shamrock Rovers Darwin: $5.00 Draw: $4.50 Brisbane Strikers: $1.50 Hume City: $1.73 Draw: $4.00 Marconi: $4.00 Blacktown: $2.60 Draw: $3.75 Sydney United: $2.20 Personally, I'll be chucking a cheeky tenner on the 4-legged multi. FNQ win, Brisbane Strikers win, and draws in the Hume City/Marconi and Blacktown/Sydney United games. With Hume and Marconi both having lost their coaches this week, and their current form not looking too good, a draw after 90 minutes is entirely possible. Likewise, Blacktown/Sydney United looks to be a tense affar, Wouldn't pass that up on going to ET and pens. Of course, I'll chuck a disclaimer in here to cover my arse, and probably FFT's. Bet sensibly, lads. Don't bet beyond your means. If you're going to have a cheeky flutter, be over the age of 18 (Sorry Salmon). Also, I'm not a bookie, or really have any idea about the whole gambling world, so don't go taking my 'tips' as authentic gambling advice. I'll try to update the odds on the matchday during my lunch break.

Hmmm interesting odds for the FNQ Heat vs Edgeworth game. I'd have put it down as a much more even game than that. FNQ Heat were great in the early parts of the season, but in the last couple of months have been very up and down. On the other hand, Edgeworth have been in good form (except for their last game against league leaders Olympic). FNQ recent league games - LLWWLWD Edgeworth recent games - WWWWWWL

Most NPL clubs barely have any spare cash to spend as it is. And even if there was some sort of unfair advantage by allowing them more visa spots, they've still got an uphill battle against the HAL teams. ;)

They'd have to sign up for the season anyway to play and are a lifeline for many new clubs.

Yes. IMO it should not be eg A-League gets 5 visa spots, NPL get 3 and non NPL can have an entire team . I think they should be eligable to play in the league, but omitted from the cup.

I agree with MT on this one. You're making it sound like they're rocking up for one or two games, and causing destruction in the Cup. You'll find most are probably over here working and have emigrated out here.

• 4 venues of the opening matchday of the Ro32• 4 talking points for the opening matchdaySo has everybody decided what matches they're attending? I'll be heading out to Blacktown City v Sydney United @ Seven Hills on MD1 after work. Will be bitterly cold but still good. There's a decent sized canteen/tuckshop at the Southern end of the ground, so will probably chow down on some cheeky hot chips washed down with my flask of whiskey to ward off the chills. I might go to Campbelltown Stadium and watch Wellington v Western Suburbs on MD2. It's a bit further to go after work, but I'll be heading to Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday after work for the Sydney v Macarthur pre-season friendly, so that should be a good test run to see how long that will take. Probably won't have time to grab dinner at the Wests Club at the Southern End of the ground, so tinnies of Carlton/VB and hot chips & pies will probably have to suffice. Both grounds will lack ethnic food delicacies unfortunately, unless SU58 decide to take a catering team to Blacktown. I'm staying at home for MD3 due to there being no games in Sydney. And of course I'll be heading down to Wollongong for the Sydney-Wollongong clash. Make a day of it, leave early in the morning, catch the train down, lunch and beers all day at the Wollongong Brewery sounds like an ideal afternoon before the game (unless somebody can recommend a better venue in the 'Gong)

Having my car serviced the day before the first matchday, so might have to give the trek out north to Hume City a miss (it's a short walk from the station, though). I'll keep MD2 free for Green Gully v CCM, definitely worth the drive, and I'll be up in Newy for the Victory game the next day. Wollongong v Sydney should be a good match so I'll probably couch potato MD4.
