Rob Greenwood, The Advertiser MARIO Karlovic once played against Portuguese superstar Luis Figo and called Spanish gun Cesc Fabregas a team-mate. This season he is leading Adelaide Blues Eagles’ charge towards FFA Cup SA glory and a debut on soccer’s national stage. The midfielder returned home this campaign after 14 years as a professional in Europe and Asia. Karlovic, who left Australia as a teenager after 10 matches for Adelaide City in the former National Soccer League, said his football journey had dealt him valuable lessons. “I’m proud of what I achieved, but you don’t realise how much you actually miss home until you come back,” Karlovic, 33, said. “I want to help younger players understand what it’s like over there because they don’t see all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on. “Everyone looks at your David Beckhams and it looks fantastic, but sometimes it’s not and sometimes it’s hard.” Karlovic will line up for Blue Eagles against Adelaide City at the Parks on Wednesday night (7pm kick-off) in the FFA Cup SA semi-final. It is a world away from his break in European football, when he signed for Italian third-tier club AS Cittadella in 2003. Mario Karlovic at Marden Sports Complex he has returned to SA after a soccer career in Europe and South America. Picture: Mark BrakeThe Australian under-17 international joined Serie A giant Torino three seasons later and faced former world player of the year Figo in a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan. “It was scary going over there at first, because you’re taking someone else’s spot and you don’t understand the language,” said Karlovic, who had a loan spell with FC Chiasso in Switzerland. “But when you love the game, you put up with all those things. “The quality of players was unreal.” A combination of visa issues and “naivety” left Karlovic stranded in the Italian lower leagues, before a short A-League stint at Brisbane Roar led him to Indonesian club Minangkabau. He spent six seasons in southeast Asia, regularly playing in front of 50,000-plus crowds in East Java derbies with Persebaya Surabaya. Karlovic said appearing for a Fabregas and Friends invitational side, alongside the Chelsea and ex-Barcelona star, in a 2012 exhibition match was a highlight. “The football side of things was unbelievable,” said Karlovic, who also played in Malaysia. “At Surabaya, we had supporters all over Indonesia and at our derby we had fans absolutely crammed into the stadium.” Karlovic returned home to allow his children to attend school in Australia. He endured a mixed start to his time at ABE as the powerhouse sat just two points above the SA Premier League relegation zone. Cup victory over the Black and Whites would put the Marden club in the June 24 final and within one win of a place in the national phase of the FFA Cup. “I’m always looking to win something – I don’t want to just be a number or just play. “This (FFA) cup opens a massive window for the younger boys on the national stage, so it’s a great opportunity.”

FFA Cup more important for Canberra Olympic and Tuggeranong United than NPLCanberra Olympic coach Frank Cachia says the national stage of the FFA Cup is more important than Canberra's premier league due to the exposure of playing against A-League sides. Olympic will play Tuggeranong United in the Fed Cup final at Deakin Stadium on Saturday, with the winner qualifying for the first round of the FFA Cup. Canberra Olympic coach Frank Cachia says the FFA Cup is more important than Canberra's premier league. Photo: James HallBoth sides are no stranger to the FFA Cup spotlight, having pitted themselves against A-League teams in the past few years. Tuggeranong were in the inaugural competition back in 2014, where they beat South Hobart in the Round of 32, before falling to A-League giants Melbourne Victory in the next round 6-0. Thousands packed into Viking Park that night and it was a similar story last year when Olympic enjoyed a Cinderella run to the semi-final, where they lost to current A-League champions Sydney FC 3-0. The importance of advancing to the FFA Cup for these two sides all comes down to exposure - for the club, their players and even their coaches. "It is more important in a manner of speaking, because you are on a national stage," Cachia said. "Having said that if we do end up winning the [Canberra premier league] title and the league, then you go in the NPL championship as well which is also on a national stage. "They are both very import, but this is the one that has risen to prominence in the last couple of years. "With the national coverage and exposure due to the inclusion of A-League sides this is the one that everyone wants to be a part of." The national platform means expanded television and news exposure and through this could come once-in-a-life-time opportunities. Players can bring themselves onto the radar of scouts, while it helps teams attract sponsors and recruit players. Olympic were approached by Melbourne and Sydney clubs to play friendlies in the wake of last year's success. "It is as terrific opportunity for the players if they do get through. We will pit ourselves against teams from other competitions and potentially the A-League," Cachia said. "This means they potentially expose themselves to scouts and coaches from the A-League and other competitions. "If they put their best foot forward, hopefully something might eventuate from that." The opportunities for players of the likes Stephen Domenici, Daniel Colbertaldo and Robert Cattanach are tremendous, the same could be considered for their boss if they go on another deep run. Cachia remained coy on that tantalising possibility. "I haven't looked beyond Tuggeranong to be honest. It is always nice to imagine what it could mean," he said. "We will approach Tuggeranong and Saturday first and see where that takes us, and the same goes for my coaching ability and career." For the first time, the Fed Cup final will be streamed live on Bar TV Sports. FFA Cup more important for Canberra Olympic and Tuggeranong United than NPL

Canberra Olympic into FFA Cup after downing Tuggeranong United in Federation Cup Stephen Domenici smiles after missing a shot on goal. Stephen Domenici smiles after missing a shot on goal. Photo: Dion Georgopoulos Canberra Olympic are through to the FFA Cup for the second straight year and coach Frank Cachia says his team has gone from the hunters to the hunted. Olympic booked their place in the round of 32 after downing Tuggeranong United 2-0 in the Federation Cup final, thanks to a brace from Robbie Cattanach at Deakin Stadium. Olympic are looking to replicate their dream run last season which saw them play Sydney FC in the semi-final and Cachia said his men were the ultimate professionals on Saturday. Photo gallery Canberra Olympic Vs Tuggeranong United FC "I was delighted with how the boys handled the expectations, every team that comes up against us wants to beat us and we know that," Cachia said. "There's a lot of media and stuff and a lot of anticipation around this club and these boys and I'm just really proud of them today." With a potential A-League side waiting for Olympic at the June 29 draw, Cachia took pride in the fact his side won't be able to fly under the radar this year. "We're excited, it's a big thrill and it probably won't set in until we get closer to that date, let's see what we can do and let's see if we can continue this run," Cachia said. "We're there now and what we really want to do this time is we want people to want to avoid us for a change. "Hopefully we'll carry a bit of a reputation with us as a big NPL team that people don't want to play against." Olympic dominated from the opening whistle against United with star striker Stephen Domenici netting twice in the early stages, but both were waved off by the linesman. They hit the lead when Cattanach lined up a free kick on the edge of the box and hit a rocket into the top left corner on 15 minutes. United worked their way back into the contest and almost found an equaliser when an Andrew Slavich header hit the woodwork. Daniel Roberts had the Tuggeranong faithful on their feet with a cracking strike from 30 yards that was only denied by the fingertips of Olympic skipper Angelo Konstantinou. Domenici should have doubled the lead just before the break but misfired from point blank. Olympic picked up where they left off in the second stanza with Daniel Colbertaldo whistling one over the crossbar and then some terrific footwork inside the box from Jeremy Habtemariam was let down with a lacklustre finish. Cattanach sealed the result on 81 minutes after coolly finishing an inch perfect through ball from Habtemariam. Tuggeranong goalkeeper Tom Barton was a standout in defeat and United coach Sean Murphy conceded his underdone side was always going to struggle against the quality of Olympic. "They're a top class side and our squad is a bit thin with injuries so it was going to be tough, but I thought we gave 110 per cent and you can't ask for any more than that," Murphy said. "There were a few simple things we didn't get right but let's be fair, the best team won today and best of luck to them in the round of 32." http://www.canberratimes.com.au/sport/act-sport/canberra-olympic-into-ffa-cup-after-downing-tuggeranong-united-in-federation-cup-20170617-gwt3pp.html

Brenton, appreciate the time and effort you put in to work all that out but it did take up 2 pages. Can I suggest maybe just a single post that shows club availability independent of their potential opponent? People can do their own matching to see if its possible if they wish.
