Round of 32 focus - Queensland

Peninsula Power

The latest in our Member Federation Round of 32 focus turns the spotlight onto the Sunshine State.

Find out more about Queensland’s four clubs who have qualified for this year’s Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds.

It’s a case of two clubs who know the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 landscape like the back of their hand, while for the other two clubs, they are preparing to enter unchartered territory.

Here are the four clubs joining Brisbane Roar FC who will be flying the flag for Queensland in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds in 2017…

FNQ Heat #FNQ

League: PS4 NPL Queensland

Home Venue: Barlow Park (Scott Street & Severin Street, Parramatta Park)

Website: fnqfc.com.au

Twitter: @FNQHeat

Facebook: facebook.com/FNQHeat

Head Coach: Tim Campbell

How they qualified

Round 5
Mareeba United FC 1
FNQ Heat 4

Round 6
FNQ Heat 3 (Jamie Carroll 27’/66’, Chris O’Hare 36’)
Northern Fury 0

Round 7
FNQ Heat 6 (Josh Jennison 25’, Jamie Carroll 34’, Chris Sullivan 42’/47’, Mqondisi Nkiwane 76’, Josh Pin 78’)
Mackay Magpies 1 (Warrick Jansen 74’)

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Sydney United 58 FC 4-1 at Sydney United Sports Centre, Edensor Park

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Oakleigh Cannons 1-1 (5-4 on penalties) at Jack Edwards Reserve, Oakleigh

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Edgeworth Eagles 3-0 at Barlow Park, Cairns

Lowdown

The team from Cairns is only the third Member Federation club (along with New South Wales sides Blacktown City and Sydney United 58 FC) to qualify for the Round of 32 every year since the Westfield FFA Cup began back in 2014.

Going by results alone, the Heat appeared rarely troubled in their path to the last 32 as, led by captain and marksman Jamie Carroll, they amassed 13 goals in their three matches.

The one sore point that the club will be determined to rectify is that they are yet to progress past the Round of 32. Being drawn away from home in the first two years did not help, although they came agonisingly close with a gallant penalty shootout loss to the Oakleigh Cannons in Melbourne.

Then last year it was a case of third lucky as they finally drew a home match, only to come up against a rampaging Edgeworth Eagles side from Northern NSW who condemned the Heat to a 3-0 defeat at Barlow Park.

Head Coach Tim Campbell was in charge during that loss to the Edgeworth and there is no doubt the fire will be burning to take FNQ Heat to its best Westfield FFA Cup finish in 2017.

At the time of writing FNQ Heat had lost just one out of seven matches at home in the league this season, a PS4 NPL season where they are currently sitting mid table after 14 rounds.

Gold Coast City #GCC

League: PS4 NPL Queensland

Home Venue: Mallawa Complex (Duncan McKenna Field, Nineteenth Avenue, Palm Beach)

Website: gccfc.com.au

Twitter: @gccityfc

Head Coach: Grae Piddick

How they qualified

Round 5
Gold Coast City 1 (Jarrod Kyle 75’)
Gold Coast Knights 0

Round 6
SWQ Thunder FC 0
Gold Coast City 4 (Jarrod Kyle 14’, Nikola Mirkovic 18’, Ben Lyvidikos 37’, own goal 60’)

Round 7
Gold Coast City FC 5 (Jarrod Kyle 9’/24’/37’/80’, Nikola Mirkovic 45’)
Caloundra FC 1

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Knocked out in Quarter Finals by Central Coast Mariners 5-0 at Cbus Super Stadium, Robina

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Western Sydney Wanderers FC 2-0 at Cbus Super Stadium, Robina

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

Similarly to their counterparts FNQ Heat up north, Gold Coast City (formerly Palm Beach Sharks) only needed to get through three matches to qualify for the Final Rounds. In saying that, you still have to win them and they did just that.

After somewhat of a shock defeat to Surfers Paradise Apollo which knocked them out of the Westfield FFA Cup last year, Gold Coast City were not going to be caught out this time around, although Gold Coast Premier League outfit Gold Coast Knights did give them a scare first up, a Jarrod Kyle goal enough to get Gold Coast City over the line.

But from there they showed their class as they accounted for SWQ Thunder and Caloundra FC in emphatic fashion, Kyle bagging six goals in the Preliminary Rounds to go with seven he has scored so far in PS4 NPL Queensland this season.

The club’s most famous Westfield FFA Cup moment came in the Round of 32 in 2015 when they ousted Victorian powerhouse South Melbourne in a thrilling penalty shootout that ended 8-7 at Cbus Super Stadium.

They also reached the Quarter Finals in 2014 but on both of their previous Final Round journeys they have fallen to Hyundai A-League opposition – the Central Coast Mariners in 2014 and Western Sydney Wanderers FC in 2015.

Currently sitting at the top of the table in PS4 NPL Queensland with 11 wins and just one loss next to their name, Gold Coast City will be a formidable opponent for whoever they are drawn against in the Round of 32.

Moreton Bay United #MBU

League: PS4 NPL Queensland

Home Venue: Wolter Park (Jacaranda Drive, Albany Creek)

Website: moretonbayunited.com

Twitter: @MoretonBayUtd

Facebook: facebook.com/moretonbayutd

Head Coach: Dave Harris

How they qualified

Round 5
Albany Creek FC 1
Moreton Bay United 2

Round 6
Holland Park Hawks 1
Moreton Bay United 2
After extra time

Round 7
Olympic FC 2
Moreton Bay United 4

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

Moreton Bay United enter their maiden appearance in the Round of 32 excited by buzz that the Westfield FFA Cup brings to all clubs who reach this stage of the competition.

The Jets’ progression to the last 32 comes off the back of three hard fought victories, the accomplishment no mean feat as all three of their Preliminary Round matches were away from home.

With Head Coach Dave Harris pulling the reins alongside Technical Director Adam Piddick, who is the brother of Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick, the duo will ensure Moreton Bay come into the Round of 32 well prepared for whoever they draw on June 29.

The Jets will be relishing the opportunity to feature in the Final Rounds after their previous time on the national stage came in the PS4 NPL 2015 Finals Series, which they qualified for after winning the PS4 NPL Queensland Championship that year.

Peninsula Power #PEN

League: Flight Centre Premier League

Peninsula Power won 7-6 on penalties

Round 7
Grange Thistle FC 0
Peninsula Power 3 (Dean Briggs 29’/47’, Charles Mendy 58’)

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

Based an hour’s drive north of the Queensland capital, Peninsula Power are just the second club from outside of PS4 NPL Queensland to qualify for the Round of 32 (Lions FC was the other).

Currently sitting eighth on the Football Brisbane Flight Centre Premier League standings, Peninsula Power has left their best results in the Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds as they stormed into serious Round of 32 calculations in their opening three matches.

Their form in the Preliminary Rounds has been impressive and after beating Grange Thistle in the Round of 32 decider, no one could argue or question their place at the Round of 32 table.

The only goals the Power conceded in the Preliminary Rounds were against Logan Lightning, which saw a grandstand finish with the home side winning a thrilling penalty shootout after scores were locked 2-2 at the end of extra time.

French born striker Charles Mendy and Dean Briggs have been prominent up front for the Power, and they will arguably need to fire if they are to have a chance of causing an upset in their first venture into the Round of 32.

Round of 32 focus - Northern NSW

Broadmeadow Magic

Two Northern NSW clubs who know what the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 is all about will suit up for a third crack in 2017. Get the rundown on Football Northern NSW’s two entrants here.

Both of this year’s Northern NSW Football entrants have featured in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds twice and both have made a statment with some commanding performances against fellow PS4 NPL opposition in the Preliminary Rounds.

The previous year that they both made it through to the Round of 32 together came in 2015, so it’s back to the future as two of the most established clubs in PS4 NPL Northern NSW prepare to line up again with 20 other Member Federation clubs aspiring to go on a magical run in the Westfield FFA Cup.

Here are the contenders from Northern NSW…

Broadmeadow Magic #BMA

League: PS4 NPL Northern NSW

2014 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Brisbane Strikers 2-1 at Magic Park, Broadmeadow

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Heidelberg United 3-1 at Magic Park, Broadmeadow

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

Broadmeadow Magic come into the Final Rounds with a point to prove. Twice they have been drawn to host in the Round of 32, and both times they have been on the wrong side of the score line at the first hurdle.

The club played in the first ever feature match of the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 when they hosted Brisbane Strikers at Magic Park in front of a national audience watching on Fox Sports.

Despite a spirited performance, Broadmeadow were edged out 2-1 and the following year they suffered a 3-1 defeat to a highly talented Heidelberg United outfit at the same venue.

After missing out last year, they find themselves back in the mix thanks to a convincing run through the Preliminary Rounds.

Former Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory midfielder Ruben Zadkovich took charge at the start of this year and has put his no nonsense, tireless playing traits into his team.

Zadkovich has blooded a number of youngsters this year and with the likes of the Virgili brothers Luke and James, veterans James Piddington and Peter Haynes, and the recent signing of Perth Glory and former Joeys midfielder Mitch Oxborrow, the future looks bright for a proud club with high expectations.

The question is can they make their mark in the Westfield FFA Cup and get out of the Round of 32 for the first time? The club's dedicated and committed group of volunteers and supporters will be hoping so.

Edgeworth FC

Edgeworth Eagles FC #EDG

Round 5

Round 7
Edgeworth Eagles FC 1 (Adam Cawley 28’)
Maitland FC 0

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Melbourne City FC 2-1 at Magic Park, Broadmeadow

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Western Sydney Wanderers FC 5-1 at Magic Park, Broadmeadow

Lowdown

Edgeworth Eagles FC have been the benchmark of Northern NSW Football over the past two years. Their achievements in that time has included winning the league twice, reaching the PS4 NPL 2016 Grand Final against Sydney United 58 FC, and qualifying both years for the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds.

And they are back in the Round of 32 for a third straight time in 2017 after booking their spot with a tough 1-0 win over Maitland FC in Round 7.

The Eagles’ previous Westfield FFA Cup Final Round campaigns saw them take it to Melbourne City FC where only two cracking Aaron Mooy free kicks proved the difference in a 2-1 result in 2015.

Then last year, they headed north to Cairns and put three goals past FNQ Heat before coming up against Western Sydney Wanderers FC in the Round of 16, a match they lost 5-1 but would have been an invaluable experience for the players still at the club heading into this Cup campaign.

Hyundai A-League championship winning striker Daniel McBreen continues to provide goals and leadership for a talented squad that proven on their day that they can score heavily and quickly. The club’s fans are in for another exciting Westfield FFA Cup ride in 2017.

Round of 32 focus - ACT

Canberra Olympic

Capital Football’s 2017 Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 qualifiers followed a similar script to last year as the same club was left standing in the nation’s capital. Get the details on ACT’s entrant here.

Being able to back up a year after taking all before them was always going to be a big mission as the hunters suddenly became the hunted.

But for this team, last year’s magical Westfield FFA Cup journey has seemed to make them even hungrier for more. And so it is that Canberra Olympic, who reached the Semi Finals in 2016 and became the first Member Federation side outside of Victoria to make the last four, find themselves back in the Final Rounds again courtesy of another impressive display in the ACT Preliminary Rounds.

2015 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2016 - Knocked out in Semi Finals by Sydney FC 3-0 at Viking Park, Wanniassa

Lowdown

Canberra Olympic were the talk of Australian football and envy of all semi professional clubs last year as they made it all the way to the Semi Finals, where their campaign eventually ended in spirited showing to Sydney FC at Viking Park.

Now the Canberra football community will again be rallying behind the blue and white as they attempt to replicate their remarkable run of 2016.

Goalkeeper Angelo Konstantinou, who is also a member of the Australia’s futsal squad, became a cult figure as Canberra Olympic’s designated penalty taker during last year’s Final Rounds.

Konstantinou’s experience, together with that of 32 year old striker Robbie Cattanach, is sure to put the team in good stead again heading into this campaign.

Cattanach came to the fore when it counted in this year’s Preliminary Rounds, scoring a brace in the win over fierce rivals Canberra FC and also in the Round of 32 decider against Tuggeranong United.

Despite not being able to hold their home matches at their regular home venue of O’Connor Enclosed due to lighting and broadcast requirements, their home away from home at Deakin Stadium proved to be a happy hunting ground and they will be hoping for more of the same in 2017.

Darwin Rovers to represent NT in FFA Cup after win over Celtic

DARWIN Rovers will again represent the Northern Territory in the Round of 32 in the FFA Cup after their 2-0 win over a brave Celtic in last night’s Sports Minister’s Cup match.

First-half goals by captain Simon Bell and elusive wingman Dean Molloy were enough to send the Darwin side into next week’s draw.

“We’re delighted to be the NT reps in the Cup again,’’ Rovers manager Jimmy Culligan said.

“Congratulations to Celtic from Alice Springs, they were a lot tougher opposition than we expected, football down there is on the way up, that’s for sure.’’

The ball was in the Rovers’ half for the majority of the first 45 minutes, with Dean Molloy busy on the left wing and captain Simon Bell incisive and strong in the midfield.

It was Bell who stepped up in the 16th minute, opening the scoring with a bending right foot shot that gave Celtic goalkeeper Zac Watts no chance, bending the back of the net before the Centralian stopper could move to his right.

Darwin Rovers FC's Wayne Dalton has eyes for the ball. PICTURE: Justin Kennedy

Two minutes later the Rovers were in again, Molloy swooping on a loose ball in the penalty area to double his side’s advantage.

But Celtic refused to go away despite the scoreline, twice creating chances through the skills of Jayjay Olivares and the busy Wayne Dalton.

Olivares forced Rovers ‘keeper Matt Ashton to turn the ball around the left hand upright when some more pace on the shot would have caused some real problems for the Darwin side.

The first period of the second half was a feeling-out period for both sides. Carl Marshall went close in the 46th minute when he was on hand to strike, but narrowly miss, from a loose ball that dropped at his feet from Simon Bell’s missed header.

Celtic should have scored in the 53rd minute when Cole Nicolaou’s free header went over the crossbar instead of bending the net and Marshall’s shot from a goalmouth scramble.

Celtic youngster Daniel Robson’s free kick in the 76th minute was blocked by the wall and a Molloy blast on 84 minutes found the outside of the net when he had more time to steady and hit the inside of the net.

FFA Cup 2017 teams: 32 entrants confirmed for Thursday’s draw live on Fox Sports

SATURDAY night’s win for MetroStars in a 2-0 triumph over Adelaide City confirmed the 2017 roll call of sides from across Australia in this season’s FFA Cup tournament.

WHEN IS THE FFA CUP DRAW?

It will be streamed on foxsports.com.au at 3pm on Thursday 29 June.

WHAT IS THE FFA CUP?

The FFA Cup pits 32 of Australia’s best professional, semi-professional and amateur clubs against each other in a knockout competition to crown the champions of the country.

Hundreds of Member Federations clubs face-off in the preliminary rounds, before 22 teams join the 10 A-League clubs to battle it out in the knockout stages and eventually the FFA Cup final.

HOW DOES THE TOURNAMENT WORK?

Every state is allocated a different number of spots in the Round of 32 (as per below).

Each state determines their Round of 32 entrants through up to seven preliminary knockout rounds - so even the deep grassroots are involved!

From there, the 32 clubs vie in the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semi finals and FFA Cup final.

CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR?

Football Federation Victoria had to add another round of additional preliminary matches to cater for the 217 teams entered, as opposed to 203 last year. A record number of 83 clubs also registered in Northern NSW.

HOW MANY CLUBS TRIED TO QUALIFY FOR THE ROUND OF 32?

This year a record 721 clubs competed in this year’s Preliminary Rounds. Once you add the A-League clubs and Sydney United 58 FC - rewarded for their National Premier League win - the total will see 732 teams whittled down to 32.

United get automatic entry to the Round of 32 after winning the National Premier League 2016 Finals Series.

Round of 32 focus - Tasmania

Olympia Warriors

Tasmania has a new Round of 32 entrant for the third time in four years and they are ready to give the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds a shake. Find out more about Tassie’s 2017 representative here.

South Hobart were Tasmania’s qualifier in the first two years of the Cup, only to bow out at the Round of 32 stage on both occasions in penalty shootouts. Then last year it was Devonport Strikers who enjoyed two home matches, which were both played in torrential rain, defeating Lambton Jaffas from Northern NSW before going down to Bentleigh Greens in the last 16.

How will this year’s entrant fair? Obviously much will depend on who they draw but here’s a bit of background on the club that will compete on the national stage from Tasmania in 2017…

Olympia FC Warriors 4 (Jake Vandermey, Jakub Sklenar x2, James Mccarthy)

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

Olympia FC Warriors' last appearance in a national competition came when they competed in the PS4 NPL 2015 Finals Series. Drawn to face South Melbourne away from home in the Elimination Finals, they stunned the Victorian heavyweights 2-1 in what will go down as one of the club’s greatest victories.

Now 18 months later they are in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 for the first time under the tutelage of coach Kenny Weston, who was previously Football Federation Tasmania’s National Development Centre coach. Weston was appointed on 4 May this year in somewhat controversial circumstances after his predecessor Ian Shaw was sacked seven rounds into the season despite the Warriors sitting on top of the table.

The new Warriors boss inherited a squad that many locals believe is the best in Tasmania. With that comes an expectation to succeed, of which qualifying for the Round of 32 was one such box predicted to be ticked off.

This task became somewhat less difficult after two of the other fancied contenders, Devonport Strikers and South Hobart, were knocked out in the earlier rounds. Olympia eliminated their other main challenger Hobart Zebras in Round 6 before coming up against the surprise packet and Cinderella story of the Preliminary Rounds, Glenorchy Knights, in the Round of 32 decider.

A 4-2 result ensued and now they have their sights set on the Round of 32.

Former Czech professional Jakub Sklenar is arguably one of the key men in a talented squad. Sklenar scored six goals in a 12-0 win over Nelson earlier in Olympia’s Cup campaign which included a hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes, and he will look forward to testing himself against much tougher opposition when the Round of 32 kicks off.

Olympia FC currently sit third on the PS4 NPL Tasmania table behind Devonport Strikers and South Hobart.

Aido's top 12 Westfield FFA Cup moments: part 2

With the Round of 32 draw almost upon us (June 29, live on Fox Sports), #MagicOfTheCup tragic Aidan Ormond offers his top Cup moments in the tournament’s three-year history. Here’s the top six!

Aido's top 12 Westfield FFA Cup moments: part 1

6: Demons’ goal extravaganza caps incredible comeback in Sydney Derby

Lilys Football Stadium witnessed an extraordinary clash, where home side Blacktown City beat Sydney United 58 FC 6-2, with four of the goals – all for Blacktown – coming in extra-time.

In fact, Sydney United 58 had led 2-0 after just 13 minutes!

Blacktown City stunned Sydney United 58 6-2 on Wednesday night.

5: Danny Choi goes viral

Going viral is one of the Cup’s killer marketing tools – so just sit back and enjoy the majesty of Choi.

TV stations couldn’t get enough of this footage as his 70m howitzer helped defeat Sydney United in an extraordinary eight-goal thriller.

4: University student Love slays mighty red and black

A few months later the Wanderers were to make history in front of 60,000 in Riyadh in the ACL – but little known Thomas Love, just 18 and a Uni student, channelled Maradona from 1986 with a breath-taking individual effort for Adelaide City to knock the mighty Wanderers out in the Round of 32 in 2014.

What a great solo goal it was by youngster Thomas Love

3: Liam Boland goes viral, too!

The big man with the big smile lit up a cold winter’s night in Melbourne’s western suburbs with a moment of sublime skill to slay an A-League opponent.

Liam Boland's long-range stunner in added time gave Green Gully a famous 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners, the 24-year old beating veteran goalkeeper Ivan Necevski with a memorable strike from 40 yards.

Green Gully striker Liam Boland celebrates his stunning winner against the Mariners.

2: Redlands rock the Reds

An NPL club beat the reigning A-League champions!

It was trending immediately after one of the most extraordinary nights in the Cup when Brisbane club Redlands made history, stunning reigning A-League champions, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 at a heaving Perry Park in Brisbane.

Redlands players celebrate their incredible win over Hyundai A-League champions Adelaide United.

1: South Springvale kick-start Cup fever in Oz

The Aris boys! Who could forget them? South Springy embodied the spirit of the Cup on the opening night back in July 2014. At the time I wrote... 'Melbourne’s self-described “pub team”, from the third tier of Victorian football, were thrust into the national spotlight after a breath-taking shootout victory over South Cardiff in the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 on July 29, 2014.

The fans, the drama of the game, the whiff of souvlaki over the suburban ground Kingston Heath: it was a night to savour and one that set up the FFA Cup as something truly unique in our sporting landscape.'

Rani Dowisha became an instant sensation with his penalty shootout save to win it for an exhausted Springy.

The Cup’s magic had been sprinkled over the Aussie sporting landscape. Other codes could only sit back and admire.

Goalkeeper Rani Dowisha was the hero when South Springvale caused an FFA Cup shock against Cardiff two years ago.

Hashtag #MagicOfTheCup was trending like crazy. Our part-time footballers were the talk of the town.

Australia was hooked.

And guess what? It’s all set to go again in July. The draw happens on June 29, live on Fox Sports.

What will be your Magical Cup Memory in 2017?

what draws would people like to see?

I'd like to get south melbourne whether it be home or away, or from a financial perspective WSW at home as it would be a sell out.

Not a Phase, Not a Trend, SYDNEY UNITED till the END!

Yep agree, would love to see some interstate NPL derbies.

I'd like too see some NPL vs A-League derbies

SU58 vs WSW
SM vs MV or MC

From a Tassie perspective I would like too see Olympia vs a big A-League club(MV/MC/WSW/SFC/BR or a big NPL clubs(SM/HU/SU58/Blacktown).

Would more than likely make the trip to Hobart for one of those match ups.

The obvious is South Vs Victory at Lakeside, but I would love for that too happen in the Round of 16 stages, just so its got more bite!
Would love to get an interstate "easier" NPL club first up......except Gold Coast for another obvious reason haha,

Other matches id love to see are
South vs Perth Glory
Sydney United Vs WSW
Hakoah Sydney City Vs Heidelberg (The old school NSL Fixture)

Knowing our luck, we will cop another Vic NPL team like Bentleigh or something and lose, taking out all the sizzle of the FFA cup for us.

A-League news: Nick Ward to Bentleigh Greens, Perth Glory, Wanderers, Queens Park Rangers

AT 21, having been named as the A-League’s inaugural Young Player of the Year and signed by Queens Park Rangers straight after, Nick Ward loomed as one of Australian football’s brightest young talents.

But after many a season whereby that potential remained just that, he had a fair idea that a tear suffered to his ACL in his debut for the Western Sydney Wanderers in March 2015 had affected the path his career was meant to go down, enormously.

He had no idea, however, just how badly it would affect his life.

After undergoing two months of rehabilitation at the club post-operation he was let go at season’s end and was effectively out on his own and out in the cold.

Left without a club base he decided to purchase a café in Melbourne to keep him busy while undergoing rehab but that commitment only made it harder for him to rebuild his football career and damaged his mental health.

Now 32 and with a fresh perspective on life and football he has gone back to basics – to the VPL’s Bentleigh Greens to be exact - to have one more crack at the big time.

But not before recounting the tough times that have lead him there.

“You quickly come to the realisation when you’re not in a professional setup just how lucky you are and how easy you’ve got it,” he told foxsports.com.au.

“People waiting on you at all times when you’re injured as opposed to seeing someone privately where they do care but really it’s a lot about swiping your card.

“I was getting frustrated and to be honest a bit depressed about it all.

“There’s been some dark moments stepping out of a structured environment. I missed that even though I had the café but that became a burden on my football and that’s why I’ve taken so long to get back into it.”

Belatedly it may be, but getting back into it, he is.

With the desire for one final chance as a professional, Ward has gone back to Bentleigh, starting off in the reserves, in the hope of one more chance in the A-League.

“I don’t feel like I ever retired in my head,” he said.

“I always had a goal to get back I just got side-tracked and took on too much with the café. I was trying to train like I was with a pro team and it just wasn’t working.

“Whether it’ll get me back into a pro team remains to be seen. I feel I can do it, my body feels right and it’s just about getting that opportunity.

“I don’t expect anything based on what I could do in the past but if it’s just a two week trial it’s no risk for a club.”

And if he does get that chance, Ward will attack it with a completely new perspective.

After being signed by QPR, following his brilliant debut season with Perth Glory, he went straight into the Londoners first team and scored in his opening month at the club.

The departure of Ian Holloway as manager, however, cost him his place.

A year later he was back in Australia at the first of five A-League clubs along with a short stint in Greece at Iraklis.

How he longs for that initial chance again.

“You don’t like to have regrets and it’s not good to dwell on the past but I definitely feel like in the early days in the A-League there was more of a drinking culture, whereas now it’s a lot more professional,” he said.

“I would have changed the way I managed things if I had my time again.

“I had some really good opportunities overseas. When I was out on loan (at Brighton from QPR) or in the reserves I could have worked harder and battled through it rather than getting upset about it.

“I’ve got perspective now on all of that which I would never really have had if not for this tough period.

“I’ll approach it very differently with one more chance.”

Ward celebrates a goal in the Big Blue.

Round of 32 focus - South Australia

MetroStars

There’s a quote, ‘good things come in threes’, and for Football Federation South Australia’s Round of 32 entrant it is proving to be spot on after they reached the Final Rounds for the third year running.

MetroStars are gaining a reputation of being a clutch big game team that knows what it takes to win when the stakes are high.

Winners of the past three South Australian Cup Finals, they relish the big stage and will no prepare for their third consecutive crack at magical Westfield FFA Cup run.

The only other FFSA club who has featured in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds is Adelaide City back in 2014, the team MetroStars beat on Saturday night in the Round of 32 decider.

Here is how they made it through to this year’s last 32…

MetroStars #MET

League: PS4 NPL South Australia

Home Venue: TK Shutter Reserve (Fourth Avenue, Klemzig)

Website: metrostars.com.au

Twitter: @MetroStarsSC

Facebook: facebook.com/NEMetroStars

Head Coach: Robbie Saraceno

How they qualified

Round 4
MetroStars 3 (Carmine Pascarella 3’, Liam Wooding 57’/85’)
Adelaide Olympic 3 (Christos Pounendis 7’/29’/31’)
MetroStars won 4-3 on penalties

Round 5
Cumberland United 1 (Frank Marafioti 22’ (pen))
MetroStars 5 (Matthew Dawber 3’/6’/16’/59’, Christian Esposito 54’)

Round 6
MetroStars 4 (Liam Wooding 30’ (pen)/49’, Jonathan Negus 83’, Christian Esposito 88’)
Croydon Kings 2 (Rocco Visconte 48’, Antoni Trimboli 69’)

Round 7
Adelaide City 0
MetroStars 2 (Jonathan Negus 7’, Christian Esposito 64’)

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Oakleigh Cannons 1-0 at Elite Systems Football Centre, Angle Park

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Bentleigh Greens 3-3 (4-3 on penalties) at Elite Systems Football Centre, Angle Park

Lowdown

MetroStars’ defence of their South Australian Cup crown almost ended at the first hurdle as they were forced to pull a rabbit out of the hat in their opening Preliminary Round match against fellow PS4 NPL side Adelaide Olympic.

A first half hat-trick by Olympic’s Christos Pounendis saw MetroStars down 3-1 at half time and staring at an early exit. But Liam Wooding’s second half brace tied the scores and that’s the way it stayed through extra time before the home side scraped over the line 4-3 on penalties.

From there, the further the Preliminary Rounds went and the bigger the games became, the more MetroStars grew in confidence. One needs to look no further than when MetroStars won three straight matches away from home against the best PS4 NPL teams in WA, Victoria and NSW on their way to being crowned PlayStation 4 NPL 2014 Champions of Australia as evidence of their resolve and ability to perform in clutch situations.

In their record of Westfield FFA Cup Final Round matches, MetroStars’ two past losses have come against PS4 NPL opposition from Victoria, while their solitary scalp was a noteworthy one, a come from behind 2-1 away win over New South Wales powerhouse Blacktown City in 2015.

Names in MetroStars’ current squad that could be familiar to those outside of the City of Churches include former Adelaide United duo Adam van Dommele and Fabian Barbiero, while striker Liam Wooding also spent time on the Reds’ youth list. But there are a host of others that have played crucial roles in MetroStars’ rise to another Round of 32 berth, and if they go deep in the Final Rounds there is a fair chance we’ll be hearing a lot more about them.

Some of the fixtures I’d like to see.

South Melbourne to host a non Victorian A-League side. Someone like Sydney FC, Perth (historical reasons) or WSW would be great to test the waters for a crowd at Lakeside and would generally be a good night out.

Heidelberg Utd as per above. Really enjoyed heading out to Olympic Village when they hosted Melb City a few seasons back. Was a great venue and surprisingly the roads copped with the 13,000 who attended really well.

Hume City deserve to travel for once. They have an incredible record of securing home ties in the cup!

Metrostars hosting someone like MVFC would be a pretty cool tie.

Sydney United hosting an a-league club would be a great night.

Edgeworth hosting the Mariners would be a fun tie especially with McBreen featuring.

Warriors hope for A-League opposition in FFA Cup

OLYMPIA Warriors coach Kenny Weston is relishing the prospect of coming up against an A-League club ahead of Thursday’s FFA Cup Round of 32 draw.

The Warriors qualified for the Round of 32 for the first time by taking out the Lakoseljac Cup earlier this month, defeating the Glenorchy Knights 4-2 in the final.

Six A-League clubs will play off against each other in the initial round, leaving the remaining four to take on opposition outside the top flight.

Weston said drawing an A-League team would be huge for the club, and the sport in Tasmania, given the publicity it would generate.

Olympia Warriors coach Kenny Weston. Picture: LUKE BOWDEN

“From a personal point of view, the potential to draw an A-League club would be so exciting for the whole of Tasmania really,” Weston said.

“It would be just an amazing opportunity for players of Olympia to come up against potentially international footballers.

“If not, an NPL team so that we can assess where our playing group is against some of the best teams from around the country.”

The Warriors are the third Tasmanian FFA Cup representative in four years, with South Hobart falling at the first hurdle twice in a row before the Devonport Strikers claimed the state’s first win in the competition last year.

The Strikers upset NSW side Lambton Jaffas at home, before going down the Victorian NPL giants Bentleigh Greens in another home match in the Round of 16.

While the majority of players will be either at work or school when the draw takes place, Weston said a group will be gathering at the home of Olympia president George Mamacas.

Weston is hoping for a home game, and believes his team is capable of following in Devonport’s footsteps and making it through to the Round of 16.

“I’ve been around football for long enough to know that there’s always opportunities to get upsets, that just happens in football and especially in cup competitions,” he said.

Round of 32 matches will be held over three weeks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning in the last week of July.

Thursday’s draw takes place at 3pm, and can be viewed live on Fox Sports News and streamed on foxsports.com.au and theffacup.com.au.

Guide to the Round of 32 draw

Here is everything you need to know about Thursday's Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 draw.

What is it?

The Round of 32 draw is one of the biggest days on the Westfield FFA Cup calendar. The Round of 32 signals the start of the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds and is the stage of the competition when the 10 Hyundai A-League clubs join the remaining 22 Member Federation clubs.

When is it on?

Coverage of the Round of 32 draw will begin at 3.00pm AEST (2.30pm ACST, 1.00pm AWST) on Thursday 29 June 2017.

FFA Cup 2017 Round of 32 draw

Where will it be shown?

The Round of 32 draw will be LIVE on Fox Sports News (Channel 500) and also streamed on www.theffacup.com.au and www.foxsports.com.au/live

How does the draw work?

The Round of 32 draw will see the Hyundai A-League clubs placed into one pot (Pot A), with the Member Federation clubs placed into another pot (Pot B).

The order of the draw will see balls pulled out of the pots to firstly determine the three (3) all Hyundai A-League club matches, nine (9) all Member Federation club pairings before the intriguing four (4) Member Federation club v Hyundai A-League club fixtures.

Order of proceedings

Pot A: 6 balls drawn out one at a time from Pot A (home then away) for the three (3) Hyundai A-League v Hyundai A-League matches.

Pot B: 18 balls drawn out one at a time from Pot B (home then away) for the nine (9) Member Federation v Member Federation matches.

Pot B & A: Remaining balls drawn out one at a time (home from Pot B & then away from Pot A) for the four (4) Member Federation v Hyundai A-League matches.

Who is running the draw?

The draw will be hosted by Fox Sports football personality Tara Rushton.

The gentlemen with the all-important job of conducting the draw (picking the balls out of the pots) are none other than former Socceroos captains and greats Peter Raskopoulos and Charlie Yankos.

Really briefly, Raskopoulos was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame last year, while one of the lasting memories that will forever be etched into the minds of Australian sports fans was this famous goal Yankos scored against Argentina…

Which clubs are in the draw and what ball numbers have they been allocated?

Pot A (10 Hyundai A-League clubs)
1.Adelaide United, 2.Brisbane Roar FC, 3.Central Coast Mariners, 4.Melbourne City FC, 5.Melbourne Victory, 6.Newcastle Jets, 7.Perth Glory, 8.Sydney FC, 9.Wellington Phoenix, 10.Western Sydney Wanderers FC

Pot B (22 Member Federation clubs)
