Playing semantics I know, but we didn't release Georgievski. He left us. He signed with Newcastle well before the end of last season. We lost Ansell as well which many people aren't talking about. He wasn't in our starting 11 in the latter part of the season, but is a pretty solid CB.

I thought Ansell left to get game time elsewhere as  Donachie was preferred in the first eleven?

What did people really expect him do after coming on with that scoreline, give the old boy a chance still very early.
I think he will surprise a few of the doubters this season.

Oh yeh he will be good imo, will kill it against some teams defenders.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it was a factor. Its my understanding that he only signed a 1 year deal at the end of 2015-16 because he was always planning on going to Europe this season (he's playing in Portugal). In his goodbye message to the fans he said he loves the club and the fans and hopes to return one day... so it seems he left on good terms.

Good win for us despite a very slow start. We could've been down by 1 in the opening minute and then conceded a soft goal 20 minutes later. Luckily that seemed to spur the boys into action and we were able to hit back almost immediately. After that FNQH never looked like troubling us.

By the end of the match 7-2 was a flattering result for them. We could've easily had another 4 or 5. I'm not sure if fitness was an issue for FNQH but they were extremely poor. They are 7th in their league and haven't won in a few weeks but we're also 7th in ours. The gap between the sides was massive despite our recent woeful form.

Heidelberg will be a tough task but home advantage will help. They're one of the best state sides in the country while we've been inconsistent all year despite being strong on paper. Should be a great game, hopefully we can avenge the 2-0 loss down in Melbourne from 2 years ago.
Yes it sure could have been more. Good result.
Good match up next one.
Record 5 NSW clubs to R16.

Wasnt impressed by the Greens Hume game mind you was windy fugly conditions.
MV's win wasn't surprising.

Look forward to R16 games.

Inconsistency is a consistent phenomenon with nearly all NPL teams in Oz, not just SU58.

Semi- pro and amateur players just cannot maintain the consistency of pro teams week in and week out over a season.

Might sound silly but maybe give them a consistent environment in which to grow.

The big advantage SU58 will have is that Heidelberg and by extension the majority of the vic npl are pretty garbage when it comes to playing on the synthetic turf, they have the players to potentially overcome it but ultimately that's where they will come unstuck.

These games will also coincide with npl finals so that's another factor. Consistency issues at the semi pro level is nation wide, Heidelberg lost 5-1 days after beating Perth last week, south haven't managed to score since beating edgeworth.

Complaints over the pitch have threatened to overshadow Melbourne Victory’s dominant 5-1 FFA Cup win over Brisbane Roar at Perry Park. A near full-strength Victory sounded an ominous warning as ex-Roar striker Besart Berisha bagged a double on a bumpy surface to ensure Brisbane failed to progress past the round of 32 for the third straight year.

But both coaches took aim at the state of the pitch after the Victory booked a date with Adelaide United, 1-0 winners over Newcastle Jets on Wednesday night.

“For an A-League team to produce that surface as a venue ... you expect it going to NPL teams but it was unexpected playing on that surface against another A-League team,” Victory coach Kevin Muscat said. “Having said that the most pleasing thing was our performance, I thought we were good value for the result.”

Roar coach John Aloisi said the surface did not help their cause after resting key defenders Luke DeVere and Avraam Papadopoulos. “It’s no excuse but the pitch was not good,” Aloisi said. “Because the pitch was so bad we still tried to play our football but our mistakes cost us – they punished us.

Adelaide United is considering hosting Melbourne Victory in an FFA Cup clash at Marden
Val Migliaccio, Soccer Writer, The Advertiser

ADELAIDE United is considering playing its round-of-16 FFA Cup clash against Melbourne Victory at Marden rather than Hindmarsh.

Adelaide chief executive Grant Mayer said the club would make a decision soon and is considering making the clash at Marden exclusive for members only and in keeping the FFA Cup tie community based.

Mayer said the club would hold a meeting Thursday morning to discuss the pros and cons of keeping the game at the home of the Blue Eagles where the Reds have won three consecutive games and scored 11 goals without conceding.

The venue has a 6000-person capacity.

“We’re in discussions about it and there are a lof of good things in terms of the grassroots community getting really involved if we keep the game at Marden,’’ Mayer said.

“The FFA don’t mind it and neither does Fox Sports and more importantly our fans enjoyed the venue last night.”

The Reds made the next round of the cup after Michael Marrone scored arguably his most important goal of his career on Wednesday night to give Adelaide United a perfect preseason clash against Victory later this month.

Marrone’s goal – his second official goal of his professional career – handed Adelaide a tense 1-0 cup win over Newcastle Jets in front of 2551 fans at Marden.

Marrone opened up his account in an unofficial match against Spain’s La Liga club Villarreal in a 3-2 loss at Hindmarsh in 2015.

Marrone then scored his first ‘real’ goal in a 3-0 win over Wellington Phoenix later in 2015 during the Reds championship-winning season. Ironically new Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick was in charge of the New Zealand side that day.

Merrick again watched Marrone damage his new club when the right back nodded the ball home from a perfect Johan Absalonsen corner in the 63rd minute.

“It was a brilliant ball from Johan, you didn’t have to do much to be fair,’’ he said before Adelaide’s recovery session at Elizabeth on Thursday.

“He just put it on a platter and I was in the right position at the right time.

“Hopefully it keeps me on attacking set-piece duties and I get to go up there a little bit more.

“It would be really good if we get a few more goals from set pieces and I hope to be up there.”

But Adelaide has a real tough test on its hands when it faces Victory.

The Victorians thrashed John Aloisi’s Brisbane Roar 5-1 away on Wednesday to set up a showdown between the 2014 Cup champion the Reds and Victory who claimed the title a year later.

“We’re very happy to get through to the next round,’’ Marrone said.

“They have made some handy additions but having a home game will help us.

“We’ll get a few players back and we’ll be strong and we’ll be ready.’

The fact that Adelaide United are even considering playing Victory at Marden, illustrates how seriously the clubs and administrators are taking this competition. It's becoming reminiscent of the old pre-season cup. Marden has a capacity of 3-4k. Why would they knock back the chance of extra revenue? - Hold the match at Hindmarsh where it would pull a crowd of at least 10k.

As for "taking it to the grass roots"... Marden is only 20 mins drive from Hindmarsh, what is their point?

Lol because they knew they won't get close to a crowd good enough to make it profitable at Hindmarsh.

AU vs Victory in the A League season would draw 15k at Hindmarsh or 30k at Adelaide Oval. If fans don't want to turn up for the same fixture in an FFA Cup tie, it only illustrates how pointless the FFA Cup is. It's just the Pre-Season Cup all over again, only with the addition of a few NPL clubs- whose fans seem to appreciate it more than the A League clubs'.

Being on a Tuesday/Wednesday for sure doesn't help anyone. Not attacking the FFA for scheduling it this way, just saying that it explains some lower crowds.

Midweek and in winter are the 2 biggest factors, and on top of that a lack of promotion. Yes games are shown live but they have no build up. Kinda reminds me of the nsl coverage on optus back in the day. I know its all afl/nrl this time of year but would it kill fox to send cameras out to npl clubs in the lead up to the games they televise? Show a bit of training footage do a few interviews etc..it needs that pre buildup during the week to create awareness.

I agree. They know which 22 non AL teams are playing. They could have an introduction of each club (footage of home ground club house, change room etc), some history (dates, events), clubs previous Cup campaign recap, interview with manager, captain and either a fan or volunteer for the club.

Just repeat it every time the team plays.
It could also be made into a pre final show showing all the clips and match highlights from every game in the tournament. Along with post match stuff.

Another factor that might come into play is that our season finishes this Sunday as we cant make the Finals. Not sure if that's a blessing in disguise or not - will the week or two of rest mean we'll be fresher than Heidelberg or just mean we're lacking match sharpness?

Great match up on paper, especially with the added history - former NSL clubs, previous FFA Cup match up.

Would be interesting to see how members only would work anyway.
As in could each member literally only purchase one single ticket?

It's possible this is being done as a way to drive up membership sales too which isn't a silly idea.
My only concern with it being at Marden is the size of the lines to get in (with 1 gate even last wednesday they had to stop bothering to scan people because the line was mental) and to use the scarce ammenities.

If there was any sort of away contingent it would be harder to police as well that's for sure.

Either way I reckon it's awesome and would LOVE to watch this game at Marden and not just coz it's a minute from my house aha

When the draw was released Facebook comments were all "play it at Marden, you bastards don't care about fans" now it's all "play it at hindmarsh, you bastards don't care about fans".

Without knowing Sydney too well, I'm guessing Belmore is a lot closer to their home base than Edensor?
