Off to the Gold Coast again, beat us on penalties last time when we should have won easily, we better clean them up this time.

Time to scrap this stupid pick one from this pot now one from this.
Just chuck all the balls in one pot and pick the draw from that
Only thing you keep is that if an A league team gets NPL team NPL team gets to host

If South win against Gold Coast, they get a guaranteed home tie against either Sydney, City, Adelaide or Wanderers.
That really is a huge incentive in itself to throw the kitchen sink against Gold Coast City.

Depending on how this weekend plays out it could be a south v Heidelberg grand final on the 10th, I think the ffa will fixture both clubs for the 2nd week (19th/20th). It's like Sydney fc v city and Blacktown v Wanderers will be up first.

Top 20 crowds of all time in the Cup. None from this year yet though I can see 3 of the quarters breaking into this top 20.

I think we've lost a bit of the buzz and have been a bit unlucky with the draw. The perfect formula for a high drawing games outside finals seems to be either, regional team v big A-league club, former big NSL club v local A-league club and most Semi Finals. Outside of Darwin v Sydney we haven't had any yet.

FFA CUP CAN BE MAGIC, BUT THERE ARE GROUNDS FOR CONCERN WHEN MINNOWS MUST MOVE

Ads by Kiosked

FOR all the great stories thrown up so far, the FFA Cup is still feeling its way — especially in terms of its venues.

Arriving at Edensor Park on Tuesday night to see Bankstown Berries host Sydney FC, hearts sank when it became clear there was little “hosting” going on in the sense that small clubs entertain the big guns in the original FA Cup.

Playing 15km from their usual ground, on an artificial pitch, and backed by almost no fans, the Berries had none of the advantages that playing at home is meant to bestow.

That’s not to slight Edensor Park in anyway, but playing the game there suited the Sky Blues more than anyone.

FFA CUP: Arnold delighted with City match-up

Officially the crowd was over 2000 but it felt the cevapi sales had accidentally been included to reach that figure. Certainly the FFA is well aware of the conundrum that moving games stymies the prospect of upsets, but there are a lot of issues at play.

At the start of each season, every FFA Cup entrant is required to nominate a ground to host games from the Round of 32 on if theirs is not up to scratch. In the Berries’ case, The Crest at Bass Hill has floodlights that don’t meet the FFA’s preferred level of 500 Lux (the measure of brightness) and a pretty rudimentary level of facilities, so they nominated Edensor Park.

To be fair to the FFA, other venues were also considered — Jubilee Oval was unavailable, Leichhardt Oval was already nominated by Hakoah (who hosted Melbourne City) and Belmore’s pitch was checked out but deemed unplayable.

So maybe in this case there was no alternative, but some creativity may equally be needed in future to preserve the character of the competition.

Alliances between clubs and associations and local councils are pivotal. The reason Blacktown City were able to host and beat the Mariners in the last round was due to their council helping in augmenting the floodlight capacity at Lily Homes Stadium with auxiliary lights.

For clubs run largely by volunteers, hosting these games is a substantial undertaking, but the whole point of the FFA Cup is to see instances of well-paid and professionally pampered A-League players slumming it in grassroots stadiums and having to prove their worth. If the water in the showers is tepid, and the pitch challenging, then so much the better.

The players’ union insists it has not mandated any minimum standards, and Fox Sports only requires the main televised game to be at a certain level of brightness from the floodlights to make it of broadcast quality.

So even if it’s only next season it would be wonderful to see games played at venues that befit the occasion and provide a context for the magic of the cup.

That's a pretty big revelation if minnows can truly play at their home venues.
Tbh I'm not sure why Sydney had three simultaneous matches on in match day 2 of r16, that may have dampened crowds.

Sydney United have had some shocking crowds in previous cups though. In 15/16 they got 350 against south hobart - second smallest in cup history for the main rounds. Also 750 against far north qld, Although they made up for it with 8k against Sydney FC

The City-South clash will be played on either September 13 or 20 – there are two quarter-finals set for both nights – and Cbus looks likely to be the venue again.

Piddick said City’s home ground at Duncan McKenna Field was not up to the necessary standard required for such an important fixture.

“We did investigate at playing at other local grounds but none are good enough,” he said.

This is the problem. More than half the state clubs have to move and it kills any potential.

I was pretty impressed with Bentleigh Greens last night  - yet again. They are the NPL team closest to walking into the current HAL and being able to play effectively in the league.

The scoreline flattered WSW.

Nick Ward should still be playing HAL football.

The two BG full backs also did some good attacking play too.

BG kept the ball quite well under some intense WSW squeezing pressure. John  Anastasiadis has the team playing  well.

Have to disagree with you there.
Nick Ward is at his level and Bentleigh have played much better this season. They were average the other night. The match was generally flat throughout.
But I agree with you on Johnny A. Top coach and deserves a shot at a higher level.

Blacktown and APIA are doing well and impressing

I've seen Bentleigh play well every time I've seen them  in the FFA Cup.

APIA were very good a few weeks ago against a mediocre Hobart Olympia team, who they outclassed.

I haven't seen Blacktown play as good a football in the Cups.

Wow!

I've seen the Greens play well against HAL opposition in both Glory and WSW - who are pro teams. Most NPL teams sit back, defend deep and compactly and try to hit HAL teams on the break. Comparatively, BG have  partly controlled games at times against HAL opposition.

I suppose  I shouldn't be surprised BG have played better against NPL opposition.
