Indigenous soccer players Dray Thompson and Taine Stephensen will debut for Darwin Olympic in a vital FFA Cup clash. Picture: KERI MEGELUSDARWIN Olympic’s reputation as the biggest local provider of indigenous soccer players will be enhanced tonight when 18-year-old Bagot resident Dray Thompson makes his senior debut in the nationwide FFA Cup.A product of the club’s thriving junior program, Thompson and defender Taine Stephensen will both debut in the Round of 32 knockout game.Thompson has followed a similar path to his uncle Shane, who plied his trade in Australian football with NTFL club Wanderers in the wet season months before switching to the round ball game with Olympic when the dry season arrived. Thompson smiled when asked if he was looking forward to pulling on an Olympic shirt in front of an expected 3000-strong crowd at Marrara’s Darwin Football Stadium. “I guess I’m a bit nervous in my first FFA Cup game,’’ he told the NT News. “But they look like starting me on the bench so that will help, but I’m looking forward to getting on the ground.’’Thompson’s uncle Shane and dad Owen got him interested in soccer where he started with the Olympic under 12s as a 10-year-old.“I always liked the game because it’s pretty fast,’’ he said. “The other mob at Bagot reckon the training is too hard, but I find it all right.“I think Aussie rules is way harder to train for, but I like playing both sports, I’d make it a draw as to what one is my favourite.’’Like any young soccer player in Australia, Thompson hopes he can pull on an A-League jumper one day and even progress to the national side.“Running is my strength where I can use my speed on the right wing,’’ he said.“So hopefully I can play in the A-League one day, maybe with Brisbane Roar because a lot of blokes reckon they are a good team.’’Thompson will leave at least three members of his family watching his every move at Darwin Football Stadium tonight - his dad, mum Trish and uncle Shane. His coach Verdi Maia will also be a keen observer, having watched his young charge progress from promising junior to a senior player.‘I’ve only been at the club since last year when as football manager my job was to identify talent within the club and across the Northern Territory,’’ Maia said.“Young players like Dray came to my attention very quickly because of their fast development and it’s why I have full confidence he will play well and represent the club at a high level.“Dray has plenty of natural ability and he’s very quick, similar to one of those lightning bolts you see flash across Darwin at Christmas time. https://www.ntnews.com.au/news/darwin-olympic-to-debut-bagot-speedster-in-crucial-ffa-cup-round-of-32-clash/news-story/28892bc5a8b2e63efbb422e1afc95a58

Anyone with a keen interest on who to watch tonight throughout all games...
Adelaide Olympic - John Karatzas & Christos Pounendis. Pounendis is leading goalscorer in the NPLSA
Floreat - Haven't watched much of these guys but Jon Stynes is always a stand-out.
Magpies Crusaders - Michael Lyall. The bloke single handedly keeps these guys competitive in the NPL. Also Josh Brookes if he plays is capable of lighting it up.
Coomera Colts - No idea.
Olympic - take your pick really, a number of players will be looking to impress. watch out for the long-haired winger Jez Lofthouse. Former Bentleigh player Chris Lucas is having a blinder, and former Nix player Alex Smith looks quality the majority of the time.
Bayswater - Daryl Nicol their striker is very good. But 19-year-old Giordano Colli will be looking to impress, technically sound player.
Darwin Olympic - By the sounds of it Dray Thompson is one to watch.
Edgeworth Eagles - again, plenty with the quality to impress tonight, 21-year-old Oli Smith is the NNSW leading goal-scorer, Cawley, Bower and Jackson are all service-able players. youngster Jose Atayde if he plays has a bit of flair.
Bulleen Lions - Phil Petreski is one of the play-makers in the team. Bulleen have a team of hard-workers so no real stand-outs.
Moreland Zebras - former A-League player Cam Watson will dictate the midfield and hopefully get the ball to Barforosh and Fulluck who are two very pacey players up front.
Mt Druitt - If they play, John Roberts, Jordan Gomez and Cooper Coskerie are the youngsters who will be looking to impress. But I reckon Toufic Alameddine will be the one to change the game, Alex Boyadijan is also a very skilful/'strong player.
Manly United - Brendan Cholakian is always up there, Adam Parkhouse will be looking to be instrumental to prove some people wrong after his A-League stint. Young Socceroo McCarthy, and Dejan Pandurevic will hopefully play as well.

A client of mine has just returned from the Hunter where he was working on a contract for the last few weeks. He was based in Maitland ... and for those no familiar the Hunter is a Football heartland similar in many ways to western Sydney but more so as they have always had teams like KB United, Rosebuds, etc broadcast on local commercial and ABC radio and heaps of coverage from the local TV station.. AnyWho he tells me the locals are fired up as hell and the street talk is how the Mariners are in for the fight of their lives... Its kinda magic a local derby against almost a park side with the locals so much behind their team ... only in Football can we get these types of outcomes... BTW remember for yonks the Hunter / Newcastle had huge crowds [often over 15k] in the NSL and before.... some highlights from KB United in 79... tis worth watching anyone who thinks it all started with Hal.... what it highlights is how poorly management run Football... Suggest if you don't wanta watch the entire thing watch from say 2:30 to 3:30 and you will see an 18K plus crowd in 1979... and broadcast on local commercial TV... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Qz1f1Jr5Y

Jez Lofthouse is definitely one to watch - rumour locally is he turned down a trial with an A-League club this month (sounds like the sort of thing Mariners would offer).

What is all this hype around Kayo Sports' (Fox Sports II) FFA cup streams when the fox sports website has done this for every single year? At HD (720p) as well.

I would be pleased if any other area of Australia has a population that by viewship has demanded all things Football get mainstream media coverage... Enjoy.. https://www.nbnnews.com.au/2019/07/24/mariners-strike-5-nil-win-against-charlestown/
