Still go, but this season is really testing my patience.

I think you will find that so many of the AFL journos put the boots into soccer down here because of their insecurities about their own positions. At The Age and the Herald Sun, the Chief Football Writer is the top dog. If they are the top dog reporter in the cities biggest sport, well then they are the cities top reporter, cos we are generally sports mad here.

The reporters have a vested interest in making out that AFL is the one and only sport in the world.

Lets imagine that Soccer was to become the number 1 sport in Melbourne or Australia, what of all the AFL or even NRL reporters? They end up like the Dave Davutavic or Michael Lynch of the paper, with their stories 14 pages into the sports section.

The colours clash but he's not, that's Milne who was then a St Kilda player and one of the most hated players in the game, was also accused of sexual assault.

Yeah my bad, I expressed myself poorly but don't make me out to be an apologist because I'm an AFL fan, the guy is a deadset c*nt.

That being said though the case was dismissed on lack of evidence, if you actually read up on the case you'll see it's not a straightforward rape case at all though, IIRC the victim claims she entered into it consensually but thought she was with his team mate as the room was dark, which as you could understand is kind of hard to prove.

Football fans victim mentality shining through once again.

The hypocritical nature of having a go at AFL fans for abusing the football while doing the exact same back to them is outstanding.

Residents of Melbourne,

I find the AFL's solipsism utterly bemusing. What mentality leads these people to continually write deranged articles drawing comparisons with other sports? Is it insecurity? Melbourne's culture?

Very much appreciate someone explaining.

It's not rocket science.

Their game has been the (for all intents/purposes)only 'football code' in their immediate societal-strata for 140+ years; the rugby codes were virtually nonexistent here until the Storm joined the NRL in 1998 and the Wallabies started playing union Tests here semi-regularly. Football was shooting itself with administerial amateurism/incompetence etc., thus not in a position to immediately challenge the VFL/AFL hegemony.

The bottom line is that for a century and a half, Aussie Rules WAS football to these people simply because there were no other(again, rhetorically-speaking) competing codes. The legacy of it is in how defensive they are about the very name, and they'll hound you out for referring to the sport in whole as 'AFL' (easily the cardinal equivalent of calling our game the s-word).

The whole issue of 'club mono-ethnicity' aside, what football also had going against it was its insistence on being a winter sport and thus being in direct competition with the VFL/AFL. Let's not forget the NSL was a winter comp for the first 12 years of its existence.

Makes you wonder how different things might have been if all domestic club-football in Australia had made the switch to summer 50 years early.

Within the AFL community it is most certainly insecurity, however some in Melbourne has this small town obsession with being "world class" which is why people there actually make a big deal out of inane shit like "most liveable city" "Sports Capital of the Universe" and get hugely defensive when making comparisons to other cities. Shit like that cross's over to AFL obsession where it's "Their Sport" and thus it must be the best sport. Of course, it then utterly infuriates them when every other part of the planet, including half of their own country, couldn't give two shits about some bogan version of Gaelic Football.

So because the sport is Australian it's bogan?

No it's bogan because it's supported and played by bogans.

Pretty much this, the constant rule changes just keep pissing me off, I still follow Fremantle, but I barely even watch them this year.

I've heard the rule changes this year pissed alot of people off.

She consented under the premise that it was someone other than Milne. In any event, her claim is that once she became conscious of the situation, she told him to stop, repeatedly.

In addition, very disturbing rumours of police complicity in the conduct of the investigation.

Some people have made the error of assuming AFL is an Australian sport. It is not.

It is a Victorian sport.

I played cricket and football as a child. I have never touched an AFL ball. I don't know what one feels like.

 This is such a fucking stupid call that seems to find a lot of popularity on these forums.

There were 41k in Sydney at the Swans game on the weekend, whilst South Australia, Western Australia and even Tasmania are all well and truly Aussie Rules loving states. I get that it's not the most popular sport in every state which is fair enough but to say it's just a Victorian thing is such a cop out.

Yes, it's essentially down to competition. Marketing themselves to make connections with competition codes in order to win over new fans, or keep current fans eyes from wandering by going "well...we offer that too".

The AFL does a feasibility study in Tasmania on a regular basis and consistently finds that there simply aren't enough 'fans' down there to substantiate a team. When they can manage to justify having one in the gold coast, that should tell you all you need to know.

It can be the most followed sport in Turkmenistan for all the difference it makes. Maybe if you meant that it was the most followed code in Tasmania then that's what you should have said instead of being a supercilious wanker.
