+xArdtho, 4.9% is the official national statistic. The real national figure is higher because not everyone who is unemployed is included in that statistic. There are also pockets or areas of super high unemployment in the USA like any countries. You can go to some communities, and find unemployment levels of 20, 30, 40 or 50%. that always the case, if it's 10% or 15%, there will be people not included in those statistic to

+xIt really is sad to see so many men here fawning over Trump because he's some sort of macho strongman. You dickheads don't even realise what a monumental fuck up this is for us. He is literally the worst thing to happen to Australia since the Vietnam war. This is worse than anything Bush and Howard did because this will go pear shaped in our region very quickly. The economic future of every single person posting in this thread is completely and utterly fucked for the next decade or two if he slaps the 45% tariffs on China he threatened and crashes their economy. Which by the way, he can do without Congress. He can also rip up the Paris agreement on climate change, which would also mean China would be tempted to abandon it as well. If he goes on a military or infrastructure spending binge, that will mean Australian interest rates go up. We have to put up with our economy and environment getting flamethrowered so that Trump can tell a few racist old coots in west Pennsylvania that their manufacturing jobs will magically reappear. Spoiler alert - it won't. Likewise our national security will be in major jeopardy if he forces Japan and South Korea to spend more on their own defense and thinks about withdrawing the American National security umbrella. Or if Trump leans on us to be the only friend in Asia to an American administration filled with White Supremacists. You all fall over yourselves to praise him just because he's a right wing nutto and you support the Australian right wing. Stop and smell the geopolitics. If he follows through with anything he campaigned on, our country will be so fucked it's not even funny. yes, so many poster on here, think they can just watch USA go up in flames, and there own life in Australia just go untouched

Maybe people thought that's what they were voting for. And sure, Hillary was part of the establishment and she shouldn't have been nominated by the democrats. But you know what? In reality, working class people of all colours are about to get the biggest mass ass-raping in American history. I give it six months before they realise how fucked they all are. Want to know why Wall Street rebounded today? It because after the shock of seeing Trump win, Wall street has just figured out that: - their real ideological soul mates, the republican party, have just taken over every branch of the American government with zero ability for the democratic party to mount any opposition whatsoever - A dumb, useful idiot controls the presidency - Trumps big business cronies will be appointed to every ministry - White supremacists and small government crazies control the house of representatives - Big business executives and lobbyists run the Senate - A supreme court justice will be appointed who will continue to allow money in politics and prevent pesky ethnic minorities from voting - republicans have retained a majority of state governorships and state legislatures in 24 states, where they will further gerrymander the house of representatives so that the democratic party will never be able to win that chamber ever again - Trump will undo environmental regulations on climate change, coal, fuel standards and electricity - Trump will get rid of the anti-banking financial regulations brought in by Obama, meaning the investment bankers can start selling their stupid derivatives again - The republicans in Congress will get rid of all consumer protection laws and the CFPB, meaning that companies won't have to act fairly and won't get fined if they get caught. - The republicans in congress will get rid of Obamacare, meaning big medical insurance companies can go back to denying coverage to people and jacking up their insurance premiums with no regulations, plus more giveaways to big Pharma This isn't an end to the establishment, it's a complete corporate takeover of America. The only reason Wall Street wanted Hillary was that she was predictable and stable, and wouldn't deport millions of illegal immigrants working below the minimum wage. They didn't actually like any of the democratic party's other policies. Now that they see America turn into a one party state run by crazed racists, fascists and big business lobbyists, Wall street loves it. They have been waiting a hundred years for this moment - where big business runs their country with zero opposition. The only think their opponents have left is the right to free speech. And the saddest thing? None of these poor, gullible schmos in South West Ohio will ever see those manufacturing jobs come back. everything point you made is right... wall street hate unpredictable, and now Trump being seen as just another very pro business Republican, and now Wall Street will boom

No one is fawning over a "macho man". they are fawning over the end of an establishment that has not benefited anyone other than the elites. People are happy that there is finally a change coming to electoral politics. Here's what I don't understand. Trump is an 'elite'. He's a billionaire that inherited his wealth, rips off his subcontractors, employs illegal employees and builds his business with nothing sourced from the US at all and yet.... and yet he's seen as the saviour of the working man?! Lastbroadcast has written 2 very lengthy insightful posts. Corporate America has indeed taken over Government in the US. The gerrymandering I linked pages back (and lastbroadcast mentioned) and to come will now entrench the Republicans for decades. The Republicans can do whatever they want. Corporate America cares not one iota for the working man. For all the cheering of Trump here if he follows through on China and whacks a giant tariff on we are in for a rocky ride. China doesn't have a domestic market to soak up their massive output. And if China falters, guess what? They'll stop buying our resources and we'll dive into a recession. Everybody, me included, wants to see politicians, SJW's and the PC police get a blood nose once in a while but FMD that doesn't mean I want to see Pauline running the country. if there a trade war between China and USA, Australia going in a big fucking recession...and Australia going into a recession. not because Australia is fucked, but because the market will think Australia is fucked, and dry up money coming into Australia What Trump has said, is very scary for Australia...and the hope now, is Trump was just saying bullshit to win

If anyone thinks Donald Trump won't try to follow through on his trade policies - just remember who put him in the white house in the first place. He lost the popular vote, but he won when working class voters in the midwest voted for him for his promises on trade and immigration.
If he betrays them on trade, his presidency will never recover. He has to do it.

Even Bernie Sanders knows why Trump was elected over Clinton and he "supported her" [Bernie Sanders] “Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids - all while the very rich become much richer. “To the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country, I and other progressives are prepared to work with him. To the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies, we will vigorously oppose him.”

Of all of the garbage that I've seen from the media over the last few days this is perhaps the most awful.

What I got from it was that he was suggesting that many decisions that the USA makes seem backward to us, so why should we look to them before making decisions for ourselves like several generations of our politicians have. The short sightedness and somewhat pointless pandering from decision makers to overseas powers has left us in a worse state than we should be considering the expertise and resources that we have had.

He's just telling some truths that you don't want to hear etc "Destroyed" There is nothing wrong with criticising Trump's policies or suggesting we look to Asia, but this idea that our society is better than their society and thus the implication that we are better people as a result shows an overwhelming sense of hypocrisy from the supposed tolerant left. Yes that is exactly right. And not only that our society, with regards to the examples Keating set out, is better than the Americans. There is absolutely no question. Only a hysterical*, tinfoil bunker dweller would think otherwise. There's plenty wrong with Australia but we are light years ahead of the US in many regards. * utterly disgraceful. * What a fucking piece of shit. * Of all of the garbage that I've seen from the media over the last few days this is perhaps the most awful.

The posts regarding the Democrat protests are a little disingenuous. The demonstrators are a disgraceful example of unhinged morons that love democracy only when the result goes their way (see Brexit) BUT.....the rest of you blokes are kidding yourself if you think it wouldn't have been 10 times worse if Clinton got in. Given Trump claimed he wouldn't respect the decision and banged on about the whole thing being rigged for the last 2 months there's no way in the world that wouldn't have blown up into something far worse. As he has now won I wonder if he'll come out and apologise for saying it's rigged. I 'm thinking no.

Ha ha. You couldn't make this stuff up. Sarah Palin, 52 The former Governor of Alaska and the 2009 Republican nominee for vice president on the John McCain ticket, Palin is a controversial and outspoken conservative. She is a runner for the role of Interior Secretary. Palin supports creationism as opposed to evolution being taught in schools and is a life member of the National Rifle Association. She is a climate change sceptic, and supports offshore drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

You'd laugh but then you remember they're running the show.

+xTrump won, take your left wing tears away from this thread. They're not tears cobber they're observations. I've already said Trump may be the shake up they need and that the democrats should accept the decision. I'm concerned as to the knock on affects for Australia. The moment the US pulls out of the Climate Change accord then China will follow suit and then that'll be the end of renewables in Australia. If you want to argue if climate change is real or not fine but the fact of the matter is fossil fuels are finite so climate change or not eventually we'll run out. This is bad for us. There are other issues like the tariffs he wants to bring in. Almost guaranteed recession. To be honest a recession and rising interest rates don't bother me. I own 2 houses outright and a nice big block of land and I'm about 2.5 years away from early retirement so yeah, have a laugh about all this when interest rates are 12% and you're trying to pay your $900 000 mortgage off. I'll be grey nomadding laughing my arse off.
