+xKeeping in mind that club teams train and play together every day, whereas our boys have probably never met each other up until last week thats no excuse. the olyroos should be beating these local sides.

No doubt you have a familial bias, which can make us all say dumb things.

Not exactly ideal prep. Not too concerned at this stage. Arnie will have a few days before the next friendly to iron out some kinks and bed down tactics etc.

Far out that is bad. Limited prep or not, our u-23s should be competing against this opposition.

I’m proud of the boys to keep it at 2-0 against the might of Malaysian club football.
Hopefully they can maybe nick a draw or two in qualification and bow out doing the nation proud!

These are the biggest names we have at youth level. Pretty poor results so far. I'll wait until the end of the group stage to judge how they've gone. I really don't know how Arnold is working with them.

We wouldn’t even be in the top 80 under 23 teams in the world so this is actually not a bad result.

Again the result should be looked at in context. It seems a massive improvement on their last game against sterner competition, still acclimatising to the conditions and bedding down Arnie's game plan. No doubt the quality is there, they just need to take their chances and hold it all together for 90 minutes... which is story of Australian football atm.

At least Arnie is admitting it we have a problem, that's the first step.
Its been a case of not looking behind our shoulder for too long and now the realisation has begun that we have work to do.
By the way with no a-league next weekend fox sports should pick these games and broadcast them.

In the club rankings we are behind Thailand. So some might say it already has happened.

So basically we could only score from a corner. No surprise we can't score, there aren't any strikers in this squad. Just like at most aussie national teams. Effectively playing a 4 - 6 - 0.
All of these players should be established stars in their respective leagues. Most are fringe squad players. When these are the best young players our country can produce we're going to be struggling big team at Socceroo level in a few years. Only maybe 1-2 potential socceroos in this squad.
As always the hope is that the next batch of Joeys who have played through more of the curriculum, skills etc will be a level above. But we've been saying that for 10 years now. Still waiting on a next gen to actually be better and have numerous players in the aleague in their teens.

The interesting thing is that based on participation per country we should be doing a lot better. Our women for example are top ten.Yet the whole world plays womens football.

In 1992 a young 21 year old Ned Zelic scored a goal from an impossible angle to beat the Netherlands and hence qualify the Olyroos for the Olympics.
That Olyroos side ended up finishing 4th at the Barcelona Olympics, just missing out on medals after a 1-0 loss to Ghana.
Fast forward 27 years and the Olyroos drew 1-1 with Malaysia in a practice game.
It’ll be interesting to see how far we have progressed/fallen after these matches in Cambodia considering It’s been a tick over a generation of development since Barcelona.

I remember watching it live and freaking out when he scored.

It's a bit harsh but its been awhile since we have seen some of the players in the youth teams make the grade up. The 2011 side that competed in the u20 world cup was the best batch to play for the Roos.

Better than the 1992 Olyroos? - Mark Bosnich - Ned Zelic - Paul Okon - Damien Mori - Steve Corica - Tony Vidmar etc.

I mean to say the 2010 team that made the AFC u20 final and played in the world cup in the following year has a fair few boys that have been involved for the Socceroos in the last few years, that has been a good group which hasn't been replicated since. Of course they no where the near the same quality as the mid-1990s gen that formed the '06 squad.
