+x+x+xThis is my 'way too early' 18 man squad I'd take to Paris 2024 (IF WE QUALIFY) - Bilokapic
- Cook
- Miller
- Rowles
- Circati
- Triantis
- Bos
- Farrell
- Teague
- Nieuwenhof
- Yazbek
- Robertson
- Volpato
- G. Kuol
- Tilio
- Irankunda
- Toure
- Maclaren
The 18 man restriction was a real pain to work around, I'd assume similar to last time we would bring 3-5 train-ons up until the tournament starts. I chose Miller, Rowles and Maclaren as my over-age players as they fit specific needs. Miller fits into the starting RB, Rowles can play multiple positions in defence and Maclaren could be really handy against this level of competition and could use someone to finish off the excellent delivery he will likely receive around him. I used the same formula we used in Tokyo 2021. 2 GK's, 6 defenders, 5 mids and 5 attackers. Very important that we have players like Farrell and Rowles who can play multiple positions. I figured in midfield we don't need two 10's because we have Tilio, Robertson and Kuol who can fill that void if necessary. It's very diverse in attack and midfield with many different lineups you could lineup. I can't see any other u23 players breaking into this squad, and I just went off necessity for the over-age. Thanks for listening to me ramble. That's a cool list. I like it. I'm not sure I'd go with overage players and certainly no Maclaren. I think i'd back u23s and would pick Italiano (RB) Popovic (CB) and whoever is in form from Botic, Jovanovic, Goodwin, Waddingham as a no.9. If I were to pick a 9 as an overager it would definitely be Duke. I'd back our U23's but Miller is 4 months off being eligible. He is basically an u23 and Talbot and Italiano are shocking. Italiano is having an all-time stinker right now against Saudi Arabia. EDIT: As soon as I type this he gets an assist. Ofc Even before the assist stinker is very harsh saudi found little joy down his flank

Glancing at the wiki, Saudi have brought in quite a few juniors to their senior squad. This U23 squad for them looks quite seasoned too. They play a lot together. I'm glad we're battering them.

So who expected this scoreline?
credit to vidmar for tightening up the space between the lines. He was screaming about that last game. Credit to fa for the extra youth games, gives us a much bigger chance of developing and qualifying

We've played pretty poorly for our standards but 3-0 is solid... Can't really take much away from this game considering it's raining. All football ability is lost in the rain, you can't run properly with the fear of slipping over E.g the third goal when the keeper slipped. And if it's not clear I think we'd dominate if it weren't raining.

We concede an injury time goal from range
reasonable effort in defence. In the maurice novello tournament triantis always made a big difference. Imagine triantis and circati there!
has to be said we were dominated in midfield this game

+xI wish someone just did a 1-10 ratings on last night so I could catch up. 3-1 sounds good though Roughly Botic: 10 for getting 2 goals Tillio: 8 for his goal involvement and causing headaches dribbing out of trouble Veluppilay: 9 for a tough finish Midfielders: 4, we were absolutely dominated for territory and possession Defenders: all around 9. Really limited their chances despite their territorial dominance and managed to do last ditch defending when we had to Gk:8 distribution was fine, no spectacular saves, goal conceded was more than forgivable

+xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9i6fB4ZS5YDraw 8pm AEST. With these players we can't afford any cheapness to stuff around. All out for qualifying and all out at the Olympics. It's true clubs won't budge but it's a fact of life like the Asian or Africa Cup. It's the freedom to not release that's the issue. Draw in a few mins. Could be the difference of going to the Olympics or not. Thanks for the link.

Well shit. We’re gonna have to play Japan or Korea in the Quarters which is essentially the Olympics qualifier.
Would have preferred one of them in our group we could go through alongside, rather than being almost inevitabley the knockout round team in our way.

Tough draw that. Big opponent in quarter finals regardless then need to be amongst top 3 as 4th plays off against CAF.

Yep that cross over with either Japan or South Korea has made our chance to qualify good as toast.
Throw in its in a non FIFA window too, not ideal either.

Yeah it's a tough draw. Last u23 Asian Cup the final was Saudi vs Uzbekistan so Japan and SK aren't unbeatable. All the top teams are reasonably close and Asian underage tournaments are known for upsets. Japan won't bring their best team similar to us, so it'll come down to coaching and who's B team can win. We are definitely close to both Korea and Japan in this tournament if we bring some of our 'A' players we have a great chance. Besides, if we want to win and compete in the Olympics we have to beat somebody good. We will most likely play South Korea in the QF which we can definitely beat.
