Postecoglou names Caltex Socceroos squad for Thailand WCQ2/2 Ange Postecoglou has named an extended 30-man Socceroos squad for the WCQ against Thailand.
- Staff writer Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has made four changes to the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Thailand at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday 15 November. Postecoglou today trimmed the 30-man squad to 23 with Japan-based striker Nathan Burns, Perth Glory’s Josh Risdon, Milos Degenek and Brisbane Roar striker Jamie Maclaren added to the squad that drew 2-2 with Saudi Arabia and 1-1 with Japan in October. They replace Tim Cahill, Apo Giannou, Chris Ikonomidis and Ryan McGowan. The squad will begin arriving into Bangkok this Sunday ahead of the match on Tuesday 15 November, which signifies the halfway mark of the Caltex Socceroos’ final stage of World Cup qualifying. “We’ve made four changes to the squad that played Saudi Arabia and Japan last month,” Postecoglou said. “It was good to have another weekend of matches to look at before deciding on the final 23-man squad and we will travel to Thailand for a solid training camp ahead of what is an important match. “The Thailand match is the halfway mark in this stage of qualifying and with the group so tight it is important that we put in a good performance to ensure we can continue to be amongst the front runners. We have a big lead in so we will get through a lot of work before the match so we are ready to go on the 15 th .” Melbourne City striker Tim Cahill has been ruled out of the match to allow him to continue to recover from soreness that saw him miss last weekend’s Hyundai A-League clash with Adelaide United.
Cahill’s injury is not serious with Postecoglou preferring to select a squad of 23 that will be ready to get through a strong week of training leading into the match. “Tim has been left out primarily because we have a 10 day lead in, which is very rare, and I want to be able to put the squad through a lot of work,” Postecoglou said. “He has done a lot of travel for club and country and I have decided it is better he remains in Melbourne where he is being managed well to ensure he is back on the park as soon as possible and ready for us down the track. “Jamie Maclaren has started the season well in Brisbane and transformed that form into a goal on the weekend so he will come into the squad, as will Burnsy, which gives us options up front.” Postecoglou has also recalled fullbacks Josh Risdon and Milos Degenek. “Josh has been in good early season form in the Hyundai A-League with Perth while Milos returned from injury last weekend in Germany so they will come back into the squad,” Postecoglou said. “They give us some good balance at right back.”

Yeah Degenek is back and will go straight into rb great swaps. made my day. it would be good if they had a friendly in the 10 day lead up. seems a waste that not many teams would take. the risdon form bit a laughable. hingert and grant should be in the team if it was based on form.

Nice to see Milos back. FYI the Thai's official facebook page says cheering etc. is allowed now. At least that's what I gather from the translation.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Throwing it out there but what about santalab as an option on the bench? He used to be a laughing stock but recently has been excellent with the chances he gets. Is also an absolute dirty prick so could also be good thing with the softies you get in Asia.

Grant and Socceroos should never be in the same sentence. The way Grant played in the big Big Blue he is playing a lot better than Risdon ATM. It may be his only decent stint at RB as he has been changed from flank to flank previously. As a 1v1 ball winner and muscle on muscle contact Grant has it all over Risdon at this point in time. Risdon is probably a better technician , but ATM Grant is in pretty good form. I think he also has more speed over the turf. Last night Grant played against one of the fastest players in the HAL in Mitch Austin and seemed to be close to him in pace. Whereas Risdon has been clearly outpaced by Austin and an ageing Brett Holman.

He'd be a contender for the squad if he was in his early/late 20's, too old now I think.

Website outside 90 put up a Roos 11 based on game time. It was Langerak Degenek Milligan Wright Gersbach Irvine Mooy Rogic Leckie Juric Goodwin.
Juric was the only one not in the squad. I reckon this line up would have been much sharper. Not going to get into tactics here but in Saudi Arabia and Thailand we were cooked. I think better fitness could have managed to get us closer to victory.
I think we've all seen it a club level when the lazy few in an 11 get taken out and some fresh, hungry players come in and tear it up. Unlike club football we've got months for Ange to communicate his expectations and I expect Ryan and Kruse to hopefully be elsewhere. Who knows how Leckie will be then and maybe someone will be injured.

ATM Ange needs to do what he has done before, with the likes of Lucas Neill.
That is to tell his players who are not playing regular club football, like Smith, who is too complacent in England; Degenek, who has only played intermittently in recent times; plus Ryan ( who still done well for the Socceroos against Thailand), that they must find regular positions in club football, or not be selected.
Leckie and Kruse should be told they not only need to play regular football, but need to score many more goals at club level. They have a current goal conversion rate of 8% for Australia. As forwards this puts a huge workload on their teammates to score to compensate. Both Leckie and Kruse have played over 40 games each for the Socceroos.
In Ange's book he says some players are not his sort of player. Rostyn Griffiths must be one.
Rhyan Grant must be another.
Alex Brosque, with a 25% goal conversion rate for the Socceroos, must be another.

Ange should also deliver the same message to Nathan Burns.
Play at club level, somewhere, or miss out.

Grant would be sent off after five minutes in international games. He is always sliding in tackles. In the HAL is playing against lower quality. The step up in class would be too much.He is a classic all energy headless chook. He plays in a team ,that doesnt value possession. So doesn't have any form playing Ange's style.Remember how Jurman played at the Roar.Their style just exposed his weaknesses.

Far too many passengers in this team at the moment and the competitiveness for places has really dropped off in my opinion. As others have mentioned, Ange must go back to what he was doing prior to WC2014 & the AC where only players who were getting consistent minutes at club level AND putting in good performances were considered for the starting XI.
Players who have been overlooked (abroad) yet getting minutes at club level AND performing are: - Brad Jones - Aziz Behich - Jason Davidson - Craig Goodwin - Ben Halloran - Alex Gersbach - Jimmy Jeggo i'm sure there are others I have left out, not including those who are doing well at home such as Kamau, Brattan, Brosque etc.

Amini and Ikon are actually playing now and scoring sometimes.. I think Jason davidson needs another look, after watching the AC final he was influential in getting us forward.

There's so much deadwood in the squad atm because of complacency. Maybe not Davidson just yet though. Give chance to some others in his position. Behich and Gersbach.

Ironic that Ange now faces a similar problem that he faced when he first took over the NT. However, this time he is responsible for it.
There are a number of players who were selected in the Thailand game not playing and therefore underperforming. He is also now 7 months off a major international tournament in the Confeds Cup in Russia. Shall be an interesting time ahead of us.

Franjic's form at RB for City is encouraging.
Last year he was no more than an average player in the HAL.

I think for Socceroo LB Smith simply needs to play regular football, albeit at a lower level in a possession based league. He has all the attributes for a LB.
