Wollongong United v Blacktwn Spartans tonight, I think Wollongong could come away with this as Wollongong have the home ground advantage plus Spartans not doing too well recently in the NPL.

Darwin Olympic resume their FFA Cup journey after sinking Casuarina 4-1 courtesy of Mitch Amidy hat-trick

A MITCH Amidy hat-trick ensured Darwin Olympic’s bid for back-to-back FFA Cup round of 32 appearances remains on track.

Olympic beat a feisty Casuarina 4-1 in Tuesday night’s qualifying game at Darwin Football Stadium.

For Amidy, the end justified the means after a sloppy start built on some post season rustiness.

“We may have gone out there in first gear and although there was no lack of respect for the opposition, we needed to talk at half-time of the expectations arising from last season’s Cup run,’’ he said.

“Everyone had in the back of their mind we had a lot to lose and it threw it off our game early on.’’

Agus Magal’s chip to the right of the post in the second minute was an early warning sign for an Olympic side not over endowed with leg speed in the back half.

Magal in the No.4 and Forkpah Ballah’s No.11 shirt were constant threats with their ability to get in behind the Reds defence.

Then veteran Red Amidy fired wide five minutes later with an angled shot that went to the left of the McMillan’s Road goal as chances began to build on both sides.

It was the cut and thrust of Casuarina against the careful build-up of Olympic and for a while the red shirts dominated.

Jason Stokes missed a chance from 10 metres when he had space and time to put the ball anywhere else but wide of the goal and Kevin Menda’s

one-on-one with Rowdies goalkeeper Georgios Skartados ended up with him on the ground and no goal.

The relief on the faces of the Reds players and their bench was obvious in the 36th minute when an Amidy chip first hit the right upright before he followed up to score the first goal of the match.

But that joy turned to despair a minute later when the busy Ballah scored with a superb left foot drive that was in the back of the net before Olympic ‘keeper Kane McAdam moved.

The coaching staff on the Reds’ bench would have been disappointed with the room and time Ballah had to size up his chances from 30 metres.

Amidy was on hand to sidefoot home his second goal in the 43rd minute, restoring Olympic’s lead in the process.

Amidy’s penalty goal six minutes into the second half when a teammate was held off the ball, gave him his hat-trick and the Reds a two-goal buffer.

Casuarina’s challenge suffered a fatal blow when Ballah was red carded in the 68th minute after accumulating two yellow card cautions.

Good on them, they will play the winner of North Shore Mariners and Sydney Olympic. I'd love to see an Illawarra based club or 2 make the final 32.

congrats to wollongong united. powerhouse of the illawarra PL. great little ground they have too. johnny martinoski doing well for them after his stint with the wolves.
some great clashes tonight. united v bankstown is the stand out for me. co leaders of the top two tiers going head to head. bankstown have been in great form so wont be an easy assignment for united, as good as theyve been playing.
rcs v mounties, another tough one. mounties have improved big time from last year and have experienced players who have played at the top tier.
plenty of other great clashes.
love the cup!

I would have loved to have seen Dulwich Hill in the FFA Cup. Hasn't been a good start to the league season and now we are out of the cup.

At least Hakoah won so hopefully the game against Bonnyrigg will be at Hensley on the night that I train. Dunbar looked competitive against Bonnyrigg early on tonight but eventually the difference in individual quality was the difference.

Bankstown City haven't had a good cup in the last few years. Knocked out by Balmain last year, thumped by SU58 this year. Didn't expect them to concede 6 though. United must have been on steroids.
