Very frustrating like a Socceroos game against minnows (despite the opposition being 3rd placed) tbh - most of the game camped in the oppositions half with a few half chances, but the best opportunity (that wasn’t the goal) fell to Benevento Half time scores for relevant games: Catania 1-0 Benevento Monopoli 1-0 Messina Brindisi 0-2 Turris Potenza 0-0 Virtus Francavilla Monterosi 0-0 Foggia This puts Catania up to 13th and relegation playoffs to be between: Potenza v Monterosi (Monterosi auto relegated due to 10 points behind Potenza) Monopoli v Virtus Francavilla (Will go ahead as the most these can finish apart is by 7 points - which is where the live table is at now) Catania hold on for the 3 points and stay in the race for promotion. Relegation playoffs will be between Potenza and Monterosi (Monterosi defeated Foggia, so that got them within the 8 points), and Monopoli and Francavilla. Catania's playoff games will be held May 11th and 14th (seeded teams normally get the home second leg, I think?) where they are essentially in the final 10 teams of the playoffs, despite finishing 13th in their regional league.

Talk about an epic choke after 3 months undefeated. Yeah something of a self suffocation that. They looked to be cruising and had guranteed high number of goals but for the last couple of games. Leicester looked in trouble but a few wins there and now they're up. The last few weeks in numerous Leagues have become just like WC qualification. Watch Ipswich slip now....

Perth Glory sister club Catania FC in an interesting dogfight that sees them both fighting for both promotion and relegation from Italy's Serie C tomorrow morning. - Qualification for the following season's full Coppa Italia AND
- Qualification to the third round of Serie C's Promotion Playoffs provided that the team doesn't meet any of the four criteria below:
- are already promoted to Serie B via finishing in the top of the league;
- have already qualified for the third round or the quarterfinals via finishing in the 3rd or the 2nd position respectively;
- have qualified for the relegation play-outs;
- are relegated to Serie D;
The way promotion works for Serie C is quite complicated. Serie C is split into 3 regional leagues - North, Central, and South (with Catania in the Southern league), with promotion only guaranteed for the winners of each league, and the winner of the Promotion Playoffs conducted across all 3 leagues, which 2nd-10th in each league (11th of the league that the Coppa winner comes from in the event they don't actually take the extra spot) all qualify for: FIRST ROUND - held over a single leg at Team 1's home ground, with Team 1 advancing in the result of a draw   SECOND ROUND - held over a single leg at Team 1's home ground, with Team 1 advancing in the result of a draw  THIRD ROUND and onwards - held over two legs from here on out, however up until the semi-finals, the seeded team (Team 1) qualifies in the result of an aggregate draw. Penalties + ET for the semis and playoff final   So, the reason why Catania find themselves fighting both for promotion, and against relegation, is they are currently sitting in 15th place (with relegation playoffs held between teams finishing 16th-19th of each league). So if they make themselves safe, they qualify for promotion playoffs. If they don't, then they take part in the relegation play-offs which are structured as below:  I think there's a rule in there that has rendered most of this post moot: "If the two teams involved in a tie are separated by more than 8 points, the matches are not played and the worst placed team is automatically relegated." I'll touch on that later when I go through the matches that are involved in this for Catania below. Here is the ladder before the final game:  Serie C has done an APL and used 'head to head points' as a tiebreaker rather than overall goal difference (which is better than just using overall wins), so on that note: Turris and Monopoli are both equal on head to head points with Catania, however Potenza is ahead of Catania, and Catania ahead of Messina. Below are the matches that I can see may have a bearing on all of this: Catania (15) v Benevento (3) Monopoli (17) v Messina (13) Monterosi (19th) v Foggia (11) Brindisi (20) v Turris (16) Potenza (14) v Virtus Francavilla (18) - Catania defeats Benevento = Safety and Promotion Playoffs
- Catania draws with Benevento = Safety IF
- Brindisi defeats or draws with Turris OR
- Virtus Francavilla defeats Potenza
- Catania loses to Benevento = Safety IF
- Brindisi defeats or draws with Turris OR
- Monopoli fails to defeat Messina and turn around the 11 goal difference (as tied on head to head points with two draws) AND Monterosi fails to defeat Foggia
From looking at this, I'm actually pretty certain safety is guaranteed due to that '8 point rule' because I don't think Catania can finish below 16th (unless both permutations under Catania losing in the morning take place), which means the relegation play off will be against Monterosi (currently 10 points behind).
