Wonder how well Collingwood would rate playing Wellington. Oh sorry that's alright, AFL is only played in 1 country.

Was this game played on a Thursday to increase ratings or something?

No idea!!! I went to game & enjoyed it immensely. Watching Ninkovic play is a privilege.

Now back to ratings & crowd attendances, I used to worry about that, these days, I'll leave that worry to the suits, I really can't control it. I would love to have AFL crowds & ratings every week in the A-League, but I'm a mere punter, who goes every week & encourages friends & family to come too.

Not surprised acl didnt rank. As said it was very late up against mind numbing shows like my kitchen rules and gogglebox and all those other shows.

Up against it but not directly as the ACL was at 10:30.

Not really my point. More arguing Australians would watch paint dry if it were properly advertised and on channel 7 9 or 10.

Great positive comment. Almost refreshing around here.

I feel exactly the same way as you now. I'm done with criticizing my club and other clubs about crowds. It actually does nothing to finger point to other fan groups. If people want to go they will go. The best thing we can do is encourage all fans to go and as a result build some hype. Everything else is just counterproductive. I just hope the suits from all the clubs continue to learn and keep trying different strategies to see what resonates positively with the fans.

Yep any shit will pull in ratings if it is on the three commercial channels. Just surprises me people still watch commercial TV it is as if we are permanently trapped in 80s. Let's hope the HAL can get on 10.

Yesterday's was the highest rating match ever on , with 165,000 tuning in.
With 275,000 tuning in on , an impressive 440,000 viewers watched create history.
It should be noted that these appear to be reach or peak figures. The average rating on Fox was 51,000 and it failed to make the top 20 for multi channels which cut off at an average of 127,000 on ABC2

Actually some good ratings here. Was not expecting this considering all the doom and gloom surrounding the league atm.

Imagine if the league was playing home and away only, with 14-16 clubs and multiple high profile players. We'd be a lot closer to hitting 100k average I reckon.

Glen Dyer writes in Crikey:

Every January, around the 27th, 28th and 29th of the month, Free TV Australia releases the July-December ad revenue figures for Seven, Nine and Ten. A second report is released at the end of July for the January-June period. The July-December report is the most important. Ad spending is higher in this period thanks to Christmas. In recent years the news in the half-year reports has not been good for the industry, and ad revenue for the three free-to-air networks is now back to around levels last seen six years ago. In other words, no growth, and profits have headed lower, forcing a bailout of Ten and massive write-downs (in the multiple of billions of dollars) by the three networks.

The report is released by Free TV Australia with the following footnote “KPMG has compiled the above data from information supplied by each TV network. Metro data has been reviewed by each network’s respective external auditor. KPMG has not audited the information supplied.”The release occurs before the Seven and Nine Network parent companies (Seven West Media and Nine Entertainment) release their December half figures. Seven reports tomorrow, Nine later in the month. But so far in 2017, nothing has emerged from Free TV Australia, and the release is 17 days late. The figures must be bad.

There might not be much of a pay day from FTA...

Its a game for everyone. Its not pale, male, or stale. It transcends race, gender, economic status. Its for everyone. - Tal Karp

AFLW gives men’s codes a kick in the ratings

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/aflw-gives-mens-codes-a-kick-in-the-ratings/news-story/4dad71c94989869dad26175bd443027d?utm_source=outbrain&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Sport_Desktop

WOMEN’S AFL has continued its television rating blitz by out-drawing the soccer and rugby 10s on the weekend.

The women’s match between Collingwood and Melbourne was the ninth most watched program nationally on free-to-air on Saturday with 346,000 capital city viewers.

As well as that imposing figure came excellent numbers on Fox Sports where it was the highest rating Saturday show on pay television with 95,000 viewers, just ahead of the other women’s game, Carlton versus GWS, which drew 83,000.Those matches finished ahead of the A-League match between Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar which drew 70,000.

Tbh I can't wait for league to bring out lingerie women's league.

It will kill in the ratings and be gold for tv. I'm sure the would put it after 10.30 and it would kill.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. E.g. trump was elected as leader, doesn't mean he will be a good leader.

I wish we could just report facts and stick to talking about football, on a football forum. Who cares about women's Afl, I don't even watch the men's game.

Our problem.is a stale league with no new teams.

Focus on the problem, not the noise

This is quite an interesting graph, comparing this season's TV ratings with the previous season (for the A-League).

upload_2017-2-17_13-34-8.png

Note that the 2015 numbers were the worst since the season before Del Piero's first.

There was a big jump in ratings in those opening five rounds, which might be due to Cahill, and/or the fact that it's that part of the year which has the clearest air.

It's also interesting that last season, there was a small bounce back in the 3rd quartile.

Would be interesting to do that same table for the last five or six seasons.

Its interesting seeing them stating the city break up of the total.  I hope they continue to do this as I want to see if the statement made by the FFA 5 or 6 years ago that Sydney provided over 40% of the viewers still holds true.

Well, the PERvBRI game shows Syd ratings at 27. Combined Syd, Bris, Mel ratings were 58.  So Per Adel combined were 11. So ratings for Per v Bris in Sydney were more than the ratings in Per and Bris combined (approx).

So if these people in Sydney watch the interstate games in those numbers it knocks the argument flat on its back that a team needs to be based in Sydney.

The figures from 5 or 6 years ago was that slightly more than 40% of viewers are in Sydney and slightly less than 30% are in Melbourne.  From 2 games  this weekend its a bit early to be coming to conclusions thats why I hope they keep giving the split.  If the numbers do stack up you also need to take into consideration which clubs they prefer to watch before deciding how it might relate to where new clubs might best be located.

It would also be interesting to do a graph showing the fall in ratings for the AFLW on Fox.
