If the players are not good enough, it doesn't matter who the selectors choose.

Having said this, Rod Marsh's comment that Jackson Bird wasn't selected as a bowler because his batting wasn't good enough to compensate for  shaky batting higher up the order seems ludicrous.

On Fox's Inside Cricket it is good having Mark Waugh on the panel  explaining selectors' decisions. He selected Maddinson on gut instinct.

I honestly believe this side is competitive with anyone (although injuries are a problem)

Batsmen: All have fantastic first class records with only khawaja below 45!
Warner
Lynn
Khawaja
Smith
Renshaw

All rounder

Maxwell: just good enough to give the bowlers a rest and take the occasional wicket while averaging 40+ with the bat. A batting allrounder is better for the ballance of the team

Wade

All four of these are all-rounders but chosen purely on bowling talent. They also provide variety. Starc gives variation being a left handed bowler, Pattison is a terrior, faulkner is a fantastic line and length bowler and o'keefe has a phenomenal first class record at and away from home. This would be the first time I can remember when all four bowlers had an average below 30. With starcs dropping this could be one of the best bowlin teams we have had

Faulkner
O'keefe
Pattinson
Starc

The combined first class batting average is close to 400 which would be one of the better batting teams we have put forward

A big weakness of course is fielding. For some reason our standards in the field are one of the worst of the top nations
