There was an article about a month a go about how Branko Culina told Jason that if you are coming back to Australia make sure you are coming back young so you can show the Australian public how good you are instead of coming back past your peak.
He may not come back next year but don't be surprise if he doesn't come back soon.

he is too young to comeback now. i think the marquee player could be from china because of palmers chinese business dealings.

IMO it would show a real lack of ambition if he came back at this stage in his career.

I think maybe after 2009/2010, at the earliest. As he'd be 30 and too old for the next one (not old for a dm, but retired internationally).

i'd laugh if the marquee was from china. I cant think of a single chinese who would have the toughness for the a-league (or thug league as junhino put it). Im thinking we wont see any regular socceroos return here until after WC'10.

"It's only a little bit of gossip," he said with a laugh this week. "I wouldn't look too much into it at the moment".
ok, why would he come out at such an early stage of the Dutch season and declare that he's going to another club? If he did admit that he had signed, he'd possibly spend the rest of the season getting splinters in his asse! I know he's signed...Great signing Miron.

In response to Fredsta i totally agree. Psv eindhoven is a world class club and Culina has the ability to earn himself a place in the starting line-up. Sterjovski cant even get onto the bench for derby county. He is like perfect marquee, him or Danny invinsible. Culina shouldnt come to the A-league until after the next Asian cup

Jason is better then PSV and he should move IMO he is also too good for the a-league however i would love to have him back. Sterjovski or Chipperfield are more likely too come back not Jason he is way too good.

At this stage, as I understand it, it's not so much about where Culina is with his career as where he would rather be living.
PSV is a great club, but Holland can be a wet, dull place. Culina's already spending heaps of time on the bench, what's next year going to bring? Permanent bench status or worse? PSV are not a club that fails to renew talent year by year.
He might go another year. He might not. We'll all just have to wait and see.

Why would a great player want to go the A-League when he is coming to the peak of the career. All players dream of playig regular football in the top leagues in Europe and he would have no wishes to come back into the A-League in the near future.

Here's a bit more fuel for the pre-Christmas fire... A lengthy review of PSV's season at goal.com talks about who they should keep and who they should buy. It describes Jason Culina as a "fringe player" who is "able to provide good cover in case of any injury trouble". In the comments, at least one fan calls for Culina to be sold. http://www.goal.com/en/news/1561/psv/2008/12/22/1023344/christmas-shopping-who-should-psv-buySure, it's not from the PSV club, but it is pretty informed analysis.

Couple of big GCU stories today: http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/12/27/34821_gold-coast-news.htmlhttp://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/12/27/34771_gold-coast-soccer.htmlThat last story has Clive Palmer calling for the abolition of the salary cap, and then this: Quote:Palmer had planned to stack his squad with Socceroos such as Jason Culina, Mile Sterjovski, Scott Chipperfield and Chris Coyne until he found himself strangled by the constraints of the cap.
Culina, likely to be officially unveiled next as the club's inaugural marquee player, is the sole survivor of that list, with Palmer adding: "Perhaps there could be salary cap exemptions for Socceroos so we can encourage them to return home and improve the level of the competition. It would be great for the public to see them at the peak of their powers.
"It is always said that the best players have to go to Europe to fulfil their potential.
"I think that's a bad thing. I think our national coach (Pim Verbeek) feels they have to go too, but I feel Australia should come first. If we are offering the right rewards, why shouldn't that be the case?"
Despite his reservations at being restricted from unleashing the full weight of his wallet, a supremely confident Palmer is convinced United will win the A-League in their debut season, before hitting Asia with typhoon-like intensity.
"We have the best team in the A-League and will lift the standard of the competition by about 300 per cent," trumpeted Palmer in trademark provocative fashion.
"We'll come back from our pre-season tour (matches against the Singapore national team, a top Japan club side and Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan FC are in the pipeline) and we'll show that for us the A-League is pretty mundane.
"We're taking it one step at a time. "We'll win the A-League, the Asian Champions, then we'll look at the World Club Cup." And from the other story: Quote:Asked if he was concerned that the downturn would put the squeeze on potential sponsorship dollars for United, Palmer replied: "Nothing is a problem for us. My company, for one, will be happy to provide sponsorship.
"Nothing will stop us from going out and winning the title. We'll have the best team in the A-League and lift the standard of the competition by about 300 per cent.
"We've put together a great team and we'll announce our full squad in mid-January (thought to include $1 million marque man Socceroo Jason Culina)."
Palmer's two private Mineralogy jets are sitting at the Gold Coast Airport and the third of his fleet is on its way.
The 112-seater jet, to become Gold Coast United's first-class mode of transport, has been undergoing a multimillion- dollar refit in Taiwan (complete with massage tables) but will call Coolangatta home soon. That's a wierd quote (non-quote?) in brackets! But basically it sounds like CULINA IS COMING!!!!!!! Edited by GazGoldCoast: 27/12/2008 06:57:45 AM

Yep sounds like he is. I also heard warning bells for Miron if he is to remain coach( I've heard rumor's he was to step back into Director of Football and another coach was in the pipe line) my mail is Palmer is ruthless and has issued an ultimatum, win the A-League in year 1 of your sacked. In this article he reinforce's his belief they will.
How rich is he, taking 40 of his staff to the Olympics...

Edited by StiflersMom: 27/12/2008 08:56:43 AM I am not sure what the deal with Miron is, but the fact that he has been able to pull together such a top squad in just a few months must put him in Palmers good books for starters, especially if Culina is confirmed. I am just waiting for Clive to shower some of that bling on his loyal blogging community! A few season tickets for me and the kids wouldn't go astray, mate!!!

Quote:Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina is poised to re-sign with Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, spurning an offer to become Gold Coast United's inaugural marquee signing.
The 28-year-old has been used as a right-fullback for the club over the past few weeks and has impressed the club's coaching staff to such a degree that he has twice been offered an improved deal to remain at the Philips Stadion over the past week.
While it's understood that Culina is yet to agree terms, the financial conditions on offer will make it hard to leave the Netherlands, where he's been since joining Ajax in 2000.
Sources at the Dutch club have said that Culina's versatility is one of the main reasons he's been offered a substantial improvement on a contract that was first tabled almost 12 months ago.
Aside from the Gold Coast, Culina was also being chased hard by Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb.

I have always said he won't come and I am stikcing to that.
Moving to the A-League would be suicide for his professional career. I imagine the only reason he would come would be if it was for other reasons that football, family reasons etc.

Wow some heated conflicting opinions in here!!
I think GCU will be a good side, atleast in the top half, but as the team stands at the moment will not be winners but also won't be down the bottom.
I look at their team and see:
Goalkeepers: Unkown quantity but probably pretty good
Defence: Weak
Midfield: Unkown
Attack: If they sign Porter then their attack is very very strong
This is why I see them high-midtable

Culina wont attract that much of an audience in the a-league IMO, so lets hope he doesnt sign for Gold Coast because he needs to play top notch club football if he wants to be in the 2010 worlc cup XI. Im hoping Palmer could bring players such as Roberto Carlos, Hakan Sukur, Yorke, Edgar Davids, Maldini, Hasslebank etc

theirs talk now, Mile Sterjovski might join the coast now too. who knows? but while Sterjovski is the main focus of the article, kinda makes the Culina deal seem a done deal. http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/01/07/37305_gold-coast-top-story.htmlI Love Clive Palmers quote, "You will see soon that we have a player of great quality to play alongside Jason." subtle. just hope he doesnt mean joel porter.
