If the ALeague continues to stay closed, many years after the NSD'S inception, the NSD will surpass it because it has deeper roots.

I disagree mate the NSD is NOT there to support the Aleague and I dont think FA wants it to either... The Aleague will remain a closed off, stand alone league for a long while yet... best the NSD and all hundreds of clubs below it can hope for is for all of US to be united... The Aleague can be run like a commercially viable franchise....If that's what APL and the investors want, that's what they should get... Which system "wins out" in the end, who can tell... lets just get it up and running first.

yep all power to them they can have it, just like maccas/bunnings I'd sooner the independant anyday, Mitre10 has quality products and staff who know what they are selling, the corner cafe/burger shop offers better quality or the local ground with souv rolls etc........
Lets see where modern day NSD takes us if anything better competition and presentation and more opportunity for the Jnrs coming through.

But this is the attitude of someone who hates the A league and wants the A league to die a slow painful death, while pining for the ethnic tension of the NSL. It's not the view of someone who wants the best for Australian football. The FFA is skeptical about NSD because they A league clubs have licences until at least 2034, guaranteeing their top flight status, so they see an NSD without P&R as commercially risky without providing any of the benefits to the main league. However this could easily be resolved by allowing bi annual promotion to the A league, as a playoff between the two NSD champions of concurrent years, allowing incremental and organic growth of the A league bi annually, and limiting relegation to those clubs that don't have guarantees until 2034. It's not perfect, but its pretty good considering the circumstances, and most importantly delivers the key ingredient that is absolutely fundamental to the growth and success of the domestic competition, without having to wait until the year 2089.

Its pretty easy to play the "effnik" card and lay assumptions left right and centre but have you stopped to actually read or listen to any of the statements coming out of FA recently?
JJ and the FA seem to see the APL and the Aleague as rivals, as a mistake that should never have happened... Whether you are "pinning for effnik sokkah tensions, sick re" or you want to wear a KFC bucket on your head for eternity the fact of the matter is this is probably the best result for all.... The Aleague can be the shiney glossy American franchise league that many people want and the FA pyramid, linking 100s of clubs in Australia together for the first time in history can be what the rest of us want . Win Win... We can even play some sort of bogus, carnival like charity shield match once a year so that the Arab, Indonesian, Russian and Chinese owners can feel like they are "doing their bit" for football in Australia :)

Two facts that are so far undeniable:

  1. APL and the foreign investors will NEVER risk the money they have poured into Aleague franchise system on the chance that they may be relegated and their licenses would be deemed worthless.
  2. The new FA, finally, sees a need to link ALL of Australian football together under one umbrella, they want to do so in winter when ALL (or at least 99.9999%) of Australian play football and they want to give players, clubs and fans the ambition, pathway and drive to improve our global level as participants in the World Game.

rooosty, tell us what franchise system in any guise have fallen back to work or coexist with opposing Independants ? unless the Franchise itself goes broke.
The best for football is just get NSD started and lets see how it runs for the first 5yrs, then look to broaden the landscape.
Right now a franchisee is only worried about their comp and ROI on top of their own hurdles we all see, nothing more nothing less and standing alone as any rich owner would.

I imagine many investors would just walk if they got relegated.

There is another interesting scenario that could play out once the NSD gets underway. Let's say, after a few seasons, there are a handful of NSD clubs that are doing really well. Getting good crowds, playing good football, winning trophies, picking up solid transfer fees and just ticking all of the right boxes. I could see the APL offering a couple of those clubs straight promotion into the A-League. No lengthy tender process. No play-off series. Just a straight invitation to join the A-League. It would be very interesting to see how the various parties involved would handle that scenario.

They just very well might and herein lies the problem. Many will see this as the desired end result and the best that we can hope to achieve. There are many "old soccer" fans out there hurting at the injustice and bewildered at how the country and sport they worked to so hard to help shape could so rudely cast them aside.. Many would feel vindicated that Hellas or Juve or Croatia are back in the top leagues but for me this is no longer enough... If top performing NSD clubs are invited to join the Aleague, dragging the drawbridge closed behind them then that is no better than the closed shop we had now AND the shit (in hindsight) NSL we had then... ENOUGH.... open it up already. :)

Or they would re-invest to ensure they get back into to the top flight. That's how it works in every other league around the world, no reason to believe Australia is any different.

But Australia IS different mate these guys invested into a business (doesnt matter that that business is a football club) I dont blame them for not wanting to jeopardise their investment... If you bought a KFC franchise and then head office told you that you had to change it into a $1 discount shop because you had been "relegated" you would go to court...

Both of those so called "facts" are deniable.

1. the key to more investment is to create a product that is deemed worth investing in. If the A league is attracting good crowds and tv audiences that will attract investment because investors will see an opportunity to make a financial return on their investment. They will also weigh up the risks of losing some of that investment through relegation, however if the product is lucrative enough they may re-invest to ensure they are promoted. So the notion that their licenses would instantly become worthless is absolute crap.

2. but they won't be linking all of football together because they will run two seperate national competitions at different times of the year which will dilute interest in both competitions. There needs to be clear demarcation of football from other codes like AFL, and that professional football is a summer sport and the other codes are winter sports. If you pitch a professional football competition to compete with AFL, league etc it will completely dilute mainsteam interest and commercial interest in the league. This might placate old skool NSL diehards who don't give a fuck about progress and just want to waves their Greek/Croat flags and sing ustate chants but for football to be reuinited and march together as one the A league and NSD must compliment each other. I'm honestly staggered that anyone seriously thinks the NSD can succeed run in competition with not only other codes but the A league. Think about how paltry NSL crowds were when it was played in the summer , as the premier league in Australian football. Now you're competing head on with other codes and its essentially just a glorfied NPL. Not only will it not work it will be a complete disaster and set P&R back at least 10 years.

1 - I agree with you but it doesnt seem like the AP does.....

2 - Keep banging that effnik drum mate, fact is APL club squads with maybe 250 odd playere max is so minuscule to the million plus particpants in this country that that everything else may as well BE all of football... You talk about competing with AFL and NRL, clubs already playing football dont compete with any other "code" they just play football..... Like I said, Keep the "glossy franchise league" around for those that want that sort of thing.... Just get out of the way of progress for the rest of us.

I agree it will be a disaster for the Aleague to join such a league so maybe best they stay out of it. and create their own 2  divisions of professional 16 club franchises like a dear poster on here wants...

Have 2 up 2 down between NSD and NPL. VIC/SA/WA/TAS play off for one promotion spot, NSW/QLD/NNSW/ACT play off for the other. Bob's your uncle.

I think 2 is too many until you have a 16 team competition so 2 up and 0 down until it gets to 16 teams.  Then I would also prefer the top 2 in each group to qualify for one of the playoffs, #1 in one region v #2 in the other region by two playoffs,  home and away with each winner being promoted.  The two winners could then playoff for the National NPL Cup if an overall NPL trophy was considered necessary.

Depends who are NSD compliant.

Have it the same as they did in Japan, you have to be compliant for promotion at the start of the season that you play for promotion.  If you aren't compliant you can still play the season but no matter how well you do you can't enter the promotion playoffs.

JJ said 16 is the magic number for the size of the NSD, so if it doesn't start off that big then you can have 2 up/1 down to expand up to 16, then go to 2 up/2 down. Some form of relegation should be in place to give teams something to play for.

And I was thinking more along the lines of two-legged play-offs, so something like VIC v TAS, SA v WA, then winners play-off for the promotion place, and NSW v ACT, QLD v NNSW, and the same.

So .... 3 Adelaide NPL clubs are flying over to Melbourne this week (that I know of so far) just for preseason friendlies, and people are STILL trying to convince themselves that the NSD wont work because flights are too expensive in Australia?????  FFS just announce it already.

I'd assume those people are using Perth's location as an excuse.

Perth Clubs, from what I understand, are currently playing their state wide night series I dont think they would travel interstate when they have that on
... some pretty cashed up clubs over there, can anyone from WA shine a light on who they think would be a good NSD club?

The two most cashed up (from what I understand) would be Perth SC and Bayswater City.

I don't know if Perth SC would be allowed to promote with the "S" in "SC" standing for "Soccer", which we all know is a forbidden word - all the wannabees start frothing at the mouth and screaming "Its football not soccer", regardless of what the majority of the English-speakers on the planet say.

All jokes aside, they'd be the two teams that have the most $$$ behind them I believe. I imagine the cost would still be a challenge from WA.
