I never realised the Crusaders made it to the Whitsundays. Long bow but wouldn't that be against NCIP?

There's 1500 people resident in the Whitsundays so beats me why they have that in the name. Unless they have some fat pokies lounge in a resort there and want to keep the punters onside

Adelaide City faces former National Soccer League rival APIA Leichhardt in National Premier Leagues finals

ADELAIDE City hopes victory over a former National Soccer League foe can wipe away the pain of grand final defeat and strengthen its push for a return to a grander stage.

The Black and Whites meet NSW club APIA Leichhardt in the National Premier Leagues finals series on Saturday after both clubs finished top of their respective state-based competitions.

Captain Matt Halliday said the Oakden clash (2pm kick-off) was a chance to rebound from their heartbreaking SA Premier League decider loss to Croydon Kings last weekend.

“It’s always hard to lose a grand final, but we’ve discussed what we could have done better and now we’ve got another game to look forward to,” Halliday said.

“There’s also another trophy up for grabs so it’s another opportunity to get something out of the year.

“It’s another challenge and another chance to rectify the weekend.”

Adelaide City skipper Matt Halliday. Picture: Stephen Laffer

City conceded five minutes from time to fall to a 2-1 defeat to the Kings – it’s fourth grand final loss in seven years.

Joe Costa is coach Damian Mori’s only injury doubt, after the former Adelaide United midfielder limped off at half-time of the decider with a hamstring strain.

APIA, which finished two points clear at the top of the NSW Premier League, also went down to Manly United in its grand final on penalties last weekend.

Daniel Cummins’ Tigers feature A-League experience in the form of goalkeeper Ivan Necevski (Sydney), winger David D’Apuzzo (Central Coast) and Brandon Lundy (Newcastle).

“That Sydney league is not an easy league to win so they’ve obviously done something right,” centre back Halliday said.

“We’re probably regarded (interstate) as not as strong a league in SA, but this is an opportunity to represent our state and show what we’re capable of doing.”

APIA Leichhardt’s Nathan Milgate tackles Manly United’s Dominic Ferguson during last weekend’s NSW Premier League grand final.

APIA featured in the NSL for 13 years, winning the title in 1987.

It last faced three-time national champion City in a 1-1 draw at Hindmarsh January 1992.

The Black and Whites have been central to discussions around the formation of a potential national second division.

Halliday said following MetroStars as SA’s sole NPL champion would strengthen its claims.

“We’re going back on the national stage and people all around Australia will be watching.

“We seem to get to finals and on that day it just doesn’t work out for us.

“But whenever there’s a chance to win a trophy, the club wants to win and this is no different.”

Taking top position in Group A is Papua New Guinea champions Lae City Dwellers who will be making their third-consecutive appearance in the competition.

Joining them are competition debutants Nalkutan FC, who claimed Vanuatu’s top berth after winning the VFF National Super League then defeating Port Vila Football League champions Erakor Golden Star FC in their play-off.

Fiji Vodafone Premier League runners-up Ba FC and the winner from the Qualifying Stage of the OFC Champions League were also drawn in Group A.

The make-up of Group B includes the winner of Solomon Islands’ Telekom S-League, Tahiti Ligue 1 VINI winners AS Dragon, New Caledonia Super Ligue runner-up AS Lossi and Erakor Golden Star FC.

Drawn first for Group D, New Zealand Premiership winner and three-time OFC Champions League runner-up Team Wellington will meet their 2016 and 2017 OFC Champions League semi-final opponent AS Magenta in the group stage after the New Caledonia champions were drawn in second position.

The runner-up from the Qualifying Stage and the second-place team from Solomon Islands have also been drawn in Group D.

The draw for the Qualifying Stage of the OFC Champions League 2018 also took place at the OFC Headquarters this morning, positioning American Samoa champions and Qualifying Stage hosts Pago Youth FC in the top position, followed by the national league winners from Cook Islands, Samoa then Tonga.

The 2018 edition will introduce a quarter-final stage, expanding the competition to five stages which will be played at different venues across Oceania and see 18 teams battle for qualification to the FIFA Club World Cup.

The champions of American Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga will open the competition calendar in 2018 when they meet for the Qualifying Stage held in American Samoa from 20-26 January.

Each group in the OFC Champions League will meet at their hosts’ venue to play each other once over three match days with two rest days between games. The three match days for Group A and Group B will be played between 10-18 February. Group C and Group D’s encounters will follow from 24 February to 4 March.

Anyone know what the reasons for winding Richmond SC up are? You don't normally do that over minor debts?

Meantime right across the country player registration numbers continue to climb faster than the rate of population growth.  Its up from 480k in the early 2000's to 620k now with numbers in Victoria having grown by 50% in that time.

I'd be interested to know whether this problem is as widespread as the writer says or is it isolated local issues that are causing the club(s) to fold.

@ GyFox

I was thinking along the same lines - winding a club up normally involves debt that the members can't carry or be resolved through normal means like fund raising or membership fees.

Honestly I think this is just local demography at play. When an area like Richmond falls to inner city hipsters then the necessary consequence is you have a lot of people concentrated in one place that don't give a shit about the local community nor want to contribute to it on that level

Richmond has fallen a long way in two years.  In 2015 they won promotion to the NPL, apparently spending a lot of money along the way (I have no idea if this is true, just what I've heard).

In 2016 they were relegated to the NPL2, and this year they've been relegated back to the State League.

The final was in a neutral ground as is the case for all finals. Just goes to show they're more interested in the social aspect which is why they don't belong in the HAL.

Celtic legend Dixie Deans surprises his old Adelaide City soccer coach Rale Rasic

THE tears flowed in Adelaide when a meeting of the most beautiful minds of the then infant first national football competition came together again 37 years after serving Adelaide City.

Australia’s first high-profile National Soccer League marquee signing John “Dixie” Deans surprised his old Adelaide City coach Rale Rasic when the Celtic legend casually walked into the clubroom where the former Socceroos’ boss was attracting all the attention from a myriad of admirers on Saturday.

Rasic, 81, the first coach to guide the Socceroos to the FIFA World Cup in 1974 arrived in town to celebrate ex-FIFA referee Don Campbell’s outstanding career at Polonia soccer club on Friday.

Little did the Socceroos’ legend know that Deans, 71, would also arrive in Adelaide from Glasgow to see his long time friends and ex Adelaide City team-mates before the Black and Whites hosted APIA Leichhardt in the Australian national premier league quarter-final at Oakden.

Rasic hugged his former striker describing Deans, along with City legends John Perin and Agenor Muniz, as “gangsters.”

“These three gangsters, which I call them, in football every team needed these men,’’ Rasic said before watching his old clubs City and APIA in the knockout clash.

“Interestingly enough they were so cooperative, they were so gentle and they were so modest, helping young players like Charley Villani, David Mitchell and Sergio Melta, they treated these boys as senior players, they made their careers grow.

“But players like Dixie, you needed to know his background to manage him, he was a great player for Celtic and Scottish football, he had a big presence in the dressing room and that made Adelaide City a much bigger club.”

Deans is a regular visitor to Adelaide.

The Celtic legend still works for the club as an ambassador on match days and he travels with the side during UEFA Champions League matches occasionally.

“Every time I get off the plane here it feels like I’m back home,’’ Deans said.

“And to see my great friend Rale, what a great manager he was and he is also a top guy.”

Rasic won the NSL Cup with City in 1979 but arguably his biggest feat during his two years at the club was attracting then glamour club New York Cosmos to Olympic Sports Field in 1979.

More than 28,000 fans packed the stadium to catch a glimpse of two FIFA World Cup winners, West Germany’s Franz Beckenabauer and Brazil’s Carlos Alberto.

Deans featured in the clash which Cosmos won 2-0.

Not really true, Richmond SC are probably the only decent club in the inner east and thus get a decent selection of their players from the surrounding rich-family suburbs in Hawthorn, Kew and Toorak.

Not to mention that Richmond has gentrified so quickly that the hipsters have hardly had time to get an actual hold of the suburb. It's all yuppie families crammed into 2 bedroom apartments now.

A cancerous suburb that can use a multitude of Zyklon. Sell the then vacant apartments to Vuck fans so we can have a short march.
