Those US comments about he Socceroos look pretty foolish now.

At least we're still in with a chance.

I can't wait for the opinions of all those USA armchair experts that come out of the woodwork around the world cup time.

The refs are very dodgy, US got eliminated to a non goal by Panama which wasn't even close to over the line.

Will be absolutely steaming when they see the replay

This is unbelievable stuff, these past 24 hours of qualifiers have been absurd.

it reminds me of the round of 16 where no one is able to score even off easy chances and the first team to show composure pulls through

Would love to have someone put up videos of honduras games (full games and highlights)

Considering the results today and standings I think it puts it into perspective how tough qualifying for the World Cup still is.

Chile (9th), Wales (13th), Slovakia (19th), Ukraine (24th), Turkey (27th), USA (28th), Netherlands (29th) - all top 30 teams that won't be at the World Cup

We're 50th (Honduras are ranked 74th)

Syria are ranked 75th ... I can't see the Honduras sitting as deep as Syria though in either leg

I don't think Honduras will be as disciplined or structured as Syria, but I'd imagine they'd offer more going forward. The away leg will be very crucial ...

5am here. I misread my ticker and thought we'd gotten USA. They're gone completely. Just wow. South America nuts too. NZ are in with a decent shot I think.

No way Peru is a crack side, especially at home.  NZ will lose by a decent margin in the end, by a 3-4 goal aggregate.

Assad autographs shirts of Syria’s national football team

The players of the professional Syrian teams in the Arab and Asian leagues arrived to Damascus on Sunday, in order to be "honored" with a ceremony to be held in al-Fayhaa Hall in Damascus.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad wrote his name and signed the chests’ of the Syrian national football team during a reception at the presidential palace in Damascus.

On October 23, the official Facebook page of the “Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic” published a photograph of Assad, writing his name and signing the players' chests.

The players of the professional Syrian teams in the Arab and Asian leagues arrived to Damascus on Sunday, in order to be "honored" with a ceremony to be held in al-Fayhaa Hall in Damascus, led by Firas Al-Khatib and Omar Al-Suma.

The Syrian team reached the Asian qualification for the World Cup for the first time in its history, but lost against Australia following the 2-1 defeat on October 10.

Syrian public opinion was divided over whether to encourage or abstain from supporting the national team. The supporters of the regime and some of the opponents considered that the team represented all the Syrians, not just the regime, and spoke of the need to separate politics from sports.

While others considered it to be the regime that exploited the football team politically, calling it the "barrels team", in reference to the explosive barrels that the regime uses to bomb the opposition.

Some considered that Assad's reception of the players as reinforcing the assumption that the team is an integral part of the regime and that politics is not separated from sports in Syria.

The President of the General Sports Federation, Muwaffaq Jumaa, also met with the players of the team in the presence of the President of the Football Federation, his deputy and the technical and administrative staff.

Getting paid big money at Al-Hilal (who regularly play ACL) ... don't think any A-League club could match his wage demands
