League boss Greg O’Rourke has admitted they will need to tweak their summer program amid some concerns over crowd numbers and television viewership over the past three weeks.

Billed as the Summer of Heroes and the answer to cricket’s Big Bash, the promotion, which started on December 28, is being run over 28 days and features 48 games involving the A-League and W-League.

In launching the promotion, which ends next week, Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop said at the time: “This summer is a perfect opportunity for fans to get out and watch matches live, on TV or streaming.”

However, fans have generally voted with their feet with a number of issues at play, including the holiday period with families away and the amount of spending money they have left after Christmas. By the end of the promotion there will have been 30 A-League games played in four weeks.

Western Sydney Wanderers, one of the best supported clubs in the league, were hardest hit having had, at one stage, to play three games in the space of eight days at the 80,000 capacity ANZ Stadium. Granted, the team isn’t performing well but not even $50 family passes could entice Wanderers fans to attend all three matches.

While O’Rourke said it has worked well in some cases, the head body will look at making some adjustments to the concept, which has been running for three seasons now.

“It works well in certain markets in certain stadiums,” O’Rourke told The Australian. “There’s a lot of good things with good crowds at Jubilee Stadium and Coopers Stadium but basically what didn’t work was midweek games in the really big stadiums like ANZ and Suncorp.”

It is a point made to The Australian by many fans who believe games at this time of year should be taken to grounds such as Penrith and Campbelltown in Sydney.

O’Rourke said FFA might look at taking more games to suburban grounds and regional areas.

“Some of the tweaking conversations I have had with some of the clubs is that maybe these midweek games in school holidays is where you take it to suburban grounds or regional areas in small boutique stadiums,” he said.

And would help if there weren't so many refereeing f***-ups

If only these idiots running the game understood that this game is football and not some other fucking code.
Copy the best leagues in the world, not the fucking AFL, NRL, or especially some stupid 6 week cricket tournament with the best media exposure, and cheapest tickets available.
Get a fixture list where you play home one week and away the next and at most only 2 games in a row both home or away. Play all games at suitable football stadiums not cricket or AFL. Extend the league instead of having a pathetic 6 month off season so we only have midweek games when it's needed, not some stupid manufactured midweek games because it's holiday season.
There is just so much wrong in this sport and they keep failing to understand where they've go be wrong.

Or just wait until we are permanent back at Parra. It wouldn't surprise me that next year, they would try to rotate us around despite the perfect home ground and then complain that despite listening to fans, it didn't work...

its interesting to note that we have always played our annual Geelong game in around early January, which was switched to early March this season. there are a lot of holiday makers down the surf coast at this time of the year of course.

some valid points, but its is not always in our best interests to copy the "best leagues around the world." we need to do what suits australian sports fans as well. for example, I'm not sure if a longer season will work in this country. I think the HAL should max out 30 games. but that doesn't mean the games can't be spread out more to extend the season and reduce the amount of midweek games. australian sports fans hate midweek games.
