Yeah. He got a three week trial at Dortmund after an initial 2 day training session but this is the A-League.

The Bundesliga definitely needs to be shut down. It must be a joke of a league.

Quick, shut all those joke leagues down. Surely they would have consulted with RBBAnon first?

I have no problem if he trials at CCM. I will be pissed if he signs a contract because he is clearly not up to standard. No real club will need to consult me, they should be able to figure it out fairly quickly.

OTOH he'd be a massive signing for the AFL.

Wonder if we'll see a headline stating "Soccer Slammed! Bolt Lauds Sherrin!"

No doubt, was saying the same thing to a mate today, AFL would be loving a signing like this.

Just imagine the photo shoots they could get with him.

AFL can get away with cheap gimmicks as their competition is mature , the competition is accepted amongst mainstream Australia and doesn’t have acceptance /respect issues that the A league and soccer has in this country .

This stunt enables the media to continue to rubbish the sport and the league . I can assure you they have already written their articles to bash their league for this development and just waiting to unleash them once story progresses more

The AFL can get away with cheap gimmicks because people don't really care about the AFL and those that care about the AFL are rusted on.

Elite teams should hire elite talent not pretenders

JULY 18, 2018

If in Port Adelaide’s darkest hours - 2012 when the tarps were being mothballed at Football Park - new club president David Koch had used his basketball contacts to lure basketball great (and former Dockers No. 1 ticketholder) Luc Longley to Alberton, would have this “marketing” move saved the Power?

Not if Luc could not live up to the precedent created by basketball-football code hopper Dean Brogan, still the only man to win both NBL and AFL titles.

At the same time as Port Adelaide realised its future was delivering to its traditional fans what matters most - a meaningful connection to their club and a fully-funded football program to be competitive on the field - the AFL was foolishly playing the gimmick card with expansion.

As Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt considers an offer to trial with A-League national soccer franchise Central Coast Mariners, it is worth reflecting on the AFL’s multimillion-dollar gamble with rugby league stars as Australian football grew its presence north of the Murray.

First it was Karmichael Hunt at Gold Coast. This has to be considered a total failure. He played 44 AFL games for the Suns after leaving the NRL Brisbane Broncos at the end of 2009.

He cost millions - and will not be remembered at Gold Coast for his after-the-siren goal that gave the Suns victory against Richmond at Cairns in 2012. Internally, there were many at Gold Coast who lamented what Hunt brought to the Suns from rugby league - a bad culture (as noted with the drug charges that followed him in his return to rugby) rather than fans who would code-hop themselves to Australian football.

“An ill-advised, ill-fated experiment,” says Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Leigh Matthews.

Israel Folau lasted just two seasons with Greater Western Sydney as he went from the NRL (Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos) to the AFL (Giants on a four-year, $6 million deal) and to rugby (Waratahs) in a quick sequence of code-hopping.

“With one signature,” says Folau as he reflects on the Giants move, “I went from the top of the NRL to the bottom of the AFL.” And to the top of the deposits record at his local bank.

His legacy at the Giants? None.

The AFL did not win any promotional battle with Hunt and Folau, just as the Power would not have made any long-term gain from any gimmick - such as putting Longley in a Port Adelaide jumper - had it strayed from rebuilding its football program in 2013.

Bolt at the Mariners is an international-grabbing headline, just as Hunt and Folau were for the AFL on a national canvas. Hunt and Folau did nothing for establishing the credibility and viability of Australian football in rugby territories.

Bolt - if he cannot make a difference on the pitch - does nothing for Australian soccer’s image at a time when the Football Federation of Australia is faced with some critical decisions on the Socceroos, the development programs of national teams and the long-term structure of the A-League.

“Bolt joins Mariners” is a nice headline. But beware of gimmicks.

Mariners are not an elite team though.

Well that depends on how you define elite. If an elite team is defined by being a team competing in the highest level comp within the country then CCM are 1 of 9 elite teams.

This is absolute marketing gold. Anyone complaining is either dumb or insane and certainly doesn't have the league's best interests at heart.

Sign him. It will be fun and would provide a lot of publicity. Ratings and crowds would initially go through the roof whenever he played. Then when he proves hopeless, quietly bench him and send him on his way a few weeks later. It will have been an entertaining and worthwhile PR stunt.

Or he could unexpectedly turn out not to be terrible, in which case the outcome is even better for everyone concerned. No one loses with either alternative.

Any one else get the feeling this is completely bullshit, I have a feeling its his agent spreading lies about these imaginary clubs after him just to get Mariners to quickly sign him up.

:laugh::laugh:

Would be a smart move on the agent's part.

The legitimacy of American approval has always been a significant pull in the Australian mainstream. If CCM "compete" with some MLS teams for his signature and sign him, it will at least buy them some good vibes until he gets onto the pitch.

I'm with you Derider, if the guy can play at A-League minimum standard, let him play, the exposure if fantastic for the league, if he's shit no coach will play him cause that would do more damage then good

This is Usain Bolt!!! Not some random dudes almost completely unknown outside NSW & QLD changing from one mickey mouse sport to another. The PR and marketing potential here is obviously on a whole different level. I think it's silly not to embrace it (albeit with a knowing smile and possibly even a wink).

Meanwhile, Central Coast's proposed six-week trial for Usain Bolt is still a possibility - although if it happens and the Jamaican sprint star proves worthy of a contract, FFA is more likely to contribute money from their marketing budget rather than the marquee fund itself.
