+x"Wellington Phoenix have been ranked the 500th best football club in the world on a list of 576 teams from across the globe." 501 is San Antonio in the USL (think NPL USA. Contains old teams like Tulsa Roughnecks and Tampa Bay Rowdies.) 502 is Gillingham League One. Seems about right from first glance. Highest Australian is Melbourne Victory at 185 just above Dinamo Moscow. How it is determined:
SPI ratings At the heart of our club soccer forecasts are FiveThirtyEight’s SPI ratings, which are our best estimate of a team’s overall strength. In our system, every team has an offensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to score against an average team on a neutral field, and a defensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to concede. These ratings, in turn, produce an overall SPI rating, which represents the percentage of available points — a win is worth 3 points, a tie worth 1 point, and a loss worth 0 points — the team would be expected to take if that match were played over and over again. Given the ratings for any two teams, we can project the result of a match between them in a variety of formats — such as a league match, a home-and-away tie or a cup final — as well as simulate whole seasons to arrive at the probability each team will win the league, qualify for the Champions League or be relegated to a lower division. Before a season begins, a team’s SPI ratings are based on two factors: its ratings at the end of the previous season, and its market value as calculated by (a site that assigns a monetary value to each player, based on what they would fetch in a transfer). We’ve found that a team’s market value — relative to their league’s average value — is strongly correlated with its end-of-season SPI rating. Thus, we use these market values to infer each team’s preseason SPI rating. +xWhy are they ranked so high ? Market value of players is an input. I imagine some of their foreigners are pretty high dollar.
Requiescat in pace!

Will they still exist after they get booted from the A-League though?

Like most sports, football just can't resist comparisons. Whether it be between players, managers or clubs, fans of the round ball are always wondering how one stands up to the other. The A-League is no different and statistics-based website FiveThirtyEight have crunched the numbers of 576 footballs clubs from around the globe to see which are the strongest and the weakest. MORE: Pogba stars as United beat Leicester City Making the most of data based around match performance, match ratings and general league strength, the site has crowned Manchester City as the current strongest club with Barcelona second and Bayern Munich third. Unsurprisingly, no A-League side cracks the top 100, but after claiming a fourth championship Melbourne Victory are the highest ranked sitting at 185th - two places higher than English side Leeds United. A little further back sit Sydney FC in 193rd with Superliga side Vélez Sarsfield and Swiss side Zurich on either side of the Sky Blues. Going down the list Melbourne City are 277th, Newcastle Jets 354th, Western Sydney Wanderers 403rd, Perth Glory 409th, Brisbane Roar 416th and Adelaide United 426th. Wellington Phoenix have been ranked 500th with last season's wooden spooners Central Coast Mariners rounding out the A-League contingent at 528th. The dreaded final spot on the 576 strong list went to English League Two outfit Grimsby Town. http://www.sportingnews.com/au/football/news/how-a-league-sides-fare-in-global-club-rankings-as-melbourne-victory-placed-higher-than-leeds-united/dkxlu4edksji1l1wvepbjfgux

So we have MV at 185, SFC at 192 and then Nix at 500 and CCM at 528. That is an enormous gap. To put that into perspective. If we look at the EPL there is 90 spots separating the clubs. In the championship it's around 160 spots separating the clubs. Other leagues like the Bundesliga have a similar spread to the EPL. Yet here with our salary capped league which is meant to provide balance we have a gap of over 340 spots.

So there’s less to divide the teams spots. There’s loads of leagues similar level to the A league to split us. An actual reliable way to measure league balance is just looking at the results in a league, in which we’re clearly much more balanced than the EPL.

Headline aside there are some interesting numbers and comparisons there.
MV and Sydney rank top 3 in J1 league. Upper/ middle Championship. 2nd SPFL, 2nd 2.Buli, 6th Eredivise, 6th Belgium, 1st Spain 2.
Basically it suggests the top A-league sides would be competitive in anything but the top 5 leagues in the world.

Points scored as percentage of total available - 2017/18, first v last Central coast 24.7% Sydney 79% West Brom 27.2% Man City 87.7% Doesn't look too clear to me at all
