+x+x+xThe Brisbane Strikers had a botique stadium that would hold about 10,000 - 15,000 as part of their HAL proposal back in 2004. Cost was banded around at $18,000,000 to upgrade a very ordinary Perry Park. That was to develop two sides (the main stand and the YMCA end) and was meant to use the CJ Foundation money from memory. Still very achievable today .... meanwhile Dolphin Oval, Ballymore, and Springfield get the money @waz Is that Springfield proposal going ahead? Yes. I think the deal is the AFL will lease the complex for 50 years for “a nominal fee” after its built. They’re only putting in about $10m of the $70m required.

The project has been on and off again for a while but the latest details are on the link below. The site was looked at for a small football stadium for an A-League club at one stage when the AFL proposal fell through. http://www.yourneighbourhood.com.au/brisbane-lions-sports-stadium-ipswich/

That's what happens when you have power I guess.

It’s very worthwhile football following the same foodchain for investment though - a 10k stadium for $200k/year for 50 years is nothing ... my club rents a football field for $80k/year and we don’t even have exclusive use over the grass.

Wonder if future HAL bids could really be 3-4 clubs banding together. Not to go all Southern Expansion style though.

Pretty valid excuses - weekday afternoon games wont draw crowds when people are at work. Lots of games have been cut short for one reason or another and they have made a bigger push into regional areas.

Haha, big cricket fan here, but no BBL for me, looks like many are seeing it for what it is now a stage show with little in the way of a sporting contest.

No bbl for you, doesnt change the fact its extremely popular and the fact that more people are watching live cricket than ever before shows its serving its purpose.

Lots of games have been cut short for one reason or another and they have made a bigger push into regional areas. I actually don’t care if they are valid excuses - but the same excuses don’t explain why crowds also fell last year and the year before. So they are just “excuses” to my eye.
BBL crowds are in free fall and tv viewing is following suit.
As a Cricket fan I’m pleased - people are seeing through it but it’s no surprise (unfortunately) that the next “short form” of the game is being developed ready to usurp BBL when necessary, as BBL did to One Day matches, and as One Day matches did to Test/4-Day Cricket
As a football fan I’m pleased too.
Gallop/Lowy went to war with football fans thinking they could rid football of the passion and replace it with family friendly bucket heads. Well it turns out MR and MRS Bucket Head are fickle and you can’t build a sport around them. Hopefully everyone in football notices.
Secondly, Fox/FTA overpaid for the cricket and it brings football in to a bit of perspective. That’s got to be a good thing.

The lesson is clear, building something new, which has long-lasting depth of support, which sustains itself year after year, is actually quite hard. I look at NRL, it has minimal growth in it, but it has sat on crowd averages of around 15k to 16k for the last 22 seasons, that figure doesn't jump around wildly, it's very, very stable. It has a long lasting depth of support which sustains it. It would be nice to build to a situation where we can sustain an average attendance in the range of 13k to 14k for 20 seasons. That's the real test. That means some teams sitting on averages of around 18k, others sitting on 9k, and everything in between, but we want to be able to sustain it for a long period. What we have currently is too many teams sitting around 7k to 9k.

It's ok for a few clubs to be in that range, but not more than half. Say, when we get up to 14 teams, there is zero problem with 3 or 4 clubs in that range, but you'd prefer the rest to be over 10k, and you'd want 3 or 4 to be consistently above 16k, which is achievable.

Wasn't that Sydney derby the night that a massive storm approached Sydney and the game was farcical? I think the BBL crowds have held up very well considering the day matches they have had this year plus there are more matches than in other years so people don't have to pick one of 4 home matches. Waz's comment above about the crowd at the Gabba being 12,000 and announced at well in to the 20k's was garbage comment that should be called out, otherwise some nuffies will believe it. Now, if you want inflated crowds look no closer than the Roar. I was at the last game (as a freeloader) - 9,000 plus, absolute BS. The place holds over 50k and they try and convince you it was 20% full. I was on the camera side, where everyone sits apparently. Very few people around me as well. Don't concern yourselves with the BBL guys. The crowds and ratings are something that the AL would die for. The next TV deal will show how well the AL is travelling. OK, away with your defensive responses, but try and stick to facts.

Naturally games that start at 2pm on a work day are going to be less popular at the gate and in lounge rooms. Even games played in primetime and weekends are down. The Sydney derby could only manage 15k on a school holiday weekend. The first derby at the scg got 35k The 2nd one was a reduced match. Weather plays a crucial part in cricket as people are unlikely to turn up if a match is threatened to be rained out or reduced. Lost count of the amount of games this season that have either been no result or decided by the silly duckworth lewis system.

+x+x+xPretty valid excuses - weekday afternoon games wont draw crowds when people are at work. I think the crowds & TV viewing are dropping!!!! Like I said I like cricket, I hear people in pubs, cafes & coffee machines in the offices talk about cricket, it's all about Smith, Cummings, Warner & of course Labuschagne performances in the Test arena, very rarely hear anyone discuss who's doing well in the BBL. I like sport, though very little knowledge or care for AFL, but I know Richmond won the premiership & some guy called Dustin Martin (I think) is the man. I like cricket & follow test matches, but I have no idea who won the BBL premiership or who is the main players. I do not they like to wear KFC buckets for hats.
