The big difference is that NZ have dropped from 5 - 4 bowlers, whilst Australia has decreased from 4 - 3. Australia has a lot of hard work to come. They have to bowl in 40 degree heat during today with the pink ball with only three specialist bowlers.

And just say "no". Gday Paddles, jj - don't know why you all carry on about the weather - beautiful. My day yesterday - went shopping in the morning, 40d but don't bother using the air con driving as not hot enough. 3 pm my little dog Scruf, who has been mentioned before & has a better cricket brain than our selectors or Paine tells me it is time to join him outside & watch the cricket together. A beautiful balmy mid 30's in the shade, set up outside with a TV, a cold one, lounge back & watch the cricket. 5.30 pm temps dropped to high 20's & time to put the whole mussels on the BBQ soaked in garlic, chilli, herbs, olive oil & red wine. Knock them off & then barramundi wrapped in alfoil with herbs,butter & white wine served with potato & green salad. All washed down with a cold one or 2. Finally Paine's painful batting ends & NZ put in - temps down to a wonderful mid 20's & watch NZ being put to the sword. Will phone the NZ tribe tomorrow & have some fun. Now Paddles, how could you not have a better day watching cricket than that - unless of course you are a kiwi.

Could be lots of work for Lyon and Labuschagne today, by the looks of it (or Wade lol).
The quicks will come out blazing (the two we have left), Kiwis certainly don't want to lose an early wicket or two here, before the conditions slow them down and the ball softens. If they cling on anything could happen. Our biggest hope in that situation would be that conditions start helping spin.
Found an interesting stat re our "flat pitches". In the last 20 yrs...32% of test matches in NZ have been draws. In Aus over the same period less than 16% of matches have been draws. So statistically drawn matches are twice as likely in Kiwiland.
Historically it's much worse. Of all matches in Aus (since1877) a little under 19% have been draws. For the Kiwis (since1930) 41% of matches in NZ have been draws, though rain affected matches are probably more common there. Surely not to that extent though.
So much for our "flat tracks"?

+x+x+x+x+xGday all jaszyjim - finally managed to get some time to watch the cricket. Due to other things happening, have seen very little over the last months, hence no posting. Have read all the posts on this test so far & interesting to see a few rivalries already. Envy you TBob that you are able to be there, would have been a great day's play to watch in our balmy weather - don't know why so many are complaining, just a summers day for us. To me our weather adds interest to the match, as a condition that has to be managed by the captains, which I think NZ is doing well at so far. Today will be interesting to see how the bowlers perform after yesterday's effort, especially being 1 down. As most of you know, I always believe we need a pace allrounder at 6 and am amazed that with the forecast we have gone in with only 3 quick's - could cost us the match as 3 quick's will not cope in 2 or more days of Perth's balmy weather (add 5 to 10 degrees extra in the middle). As I said, our weather adds a condition to allow for & the selectors have failed to allow for same. I should add I am an ex Kiwi, been in WA some 30 odd years, now Aussie through & through but my siblings are in NZ so will be some good banter between us. G'day JJ - who would you have had as your allrounder - Mitch Marsh? Hope you are enjoying your family NZ-Aus rivalries! :D Gday TBob, jj - there has been so much discussion re an allrounder previously & I am not up to speed with what is happening now. M, Marsh has been played & I use his inclusion as a bench mark of the quality of our side. ie he is not good enough, hence our side comprises of B grade players = probable loss. The young WA player (name escapes me) has good creds but probably needs more shield matches. Others will know if there are any promising ones out there. Many on the forum do not like an allrounder inclusion, to me if we can produce a quality one it really helps round out the side. Last time we played 3 quick's on a hottish day - below our Perth balmy weather temps they struggled. This will be particularly noticeable if the pitch dries & flattens out into a batsman strip - do not know if it will crack up like the WACA used to, which then makes bowling interesting. Watching the tv now, and fine cracks are already appearing. In an interview with the curator a day or two ago, he indicated it would crack more like a "dinner plate" rather than big wide cracks that the WACA has. No chance of seeing you in your wide floppy Bobbie as the cameras never showed the scoreboard.. sorry once that I recall. How was your day. Labuchagne keeps going on his merry way. 100 Test runs.. fourth fastest too. he has taken over from Smith as our team anchor. Marnus misses one on his legs and is bowled by Wagner. Head keeps wafting at everything. Someone tell him he is playing Test cricket not T20. Good chance for Timmy to get a decent score. My day was good thanks, Baggers. Haha wouldn't have seen the hat anyways as I took it off when I snaggled a different seat in the shade. Had a very enjoyable 2nd and 3rd session chatting the chat with a cricket mate and sitting directly outside the NZ dug out. Boult seemed to be doing more running around to and from the field than he would have if he was playing! It would have been good to be there last night to see Starc in action. I'm not sure my kids will be enthralled with today's play, I'm still deciding if we will go for the whole day. It's not like the WACA where they can run around on the hill.

Nah - NZ pitches have been predominately roads since 2013. Its deliberate. Dunedin sometimes has some life to it. Indian fans still complain about a series 20 years ago where the NZ pitches were deliberately very nasty and spicey and Ganguly, Laxman, Dravid and Tendy et al got blown away. So we can build whatever we want for whomever we want. The Basin is the worst offender. And our premier ground. England loathed the Mount, and have complained endlessly about Hamilton. Our pitches are very flat with a thick grass cover that does not grip. Plus we use the Kookie - so all too often if there is no swing either. NZ and Aus have the highest batting average for wickets in the past decade. SA and England has been making the most shoot out pitches. SA gave India a horrid set of 3 pitches last year. The Dukes for India in England was curving around corners... Both teams dropped openers, Cook retired. South Africa and England is where a seamer wants to be. Also WI for the last two years, since they went new Dukes and relayed their pitches for tests. NZ and Aus are where a batsman wants to be. India - well they always want to be in India. They're just destroying everyone there.

+x+x+x+xNZ in huge trouble here. Without their best bowler before the match. Lost the toss. Lost their fastest bowler. Now 3 wickets down and over 330 runs behind. NZ need a massive partnership somewhere in the next 4 wickets... NZ dont need parity, NZ need 500... What about Aus down to three bowlers, 40 degrees, pink ball in daylight tomorrow? doesnt really matter. unless aus enforce a follow on. but they wont. toss was crucial. NZ in huge trouble here. Im already looking to the India series tbh... Hopefully Boult will be fit for that. Time for NZ to rebuild and wait for the return Aus series in NZ in 2027 or something... Aus has won this series already. Its over. Too many injuries for NZ and coin toss loss. We're stuffed. We will lose here. And lose the next two as well. It's over. Even if we salvaged a draw here. We needed to win the pinkie. But we can't without Boult and a coin toss loss. We're not good enough too. Our attack is too weak. And just say "no". Gday Paddles, jj - don't know why you all carry on about the weather - beautiful. My day yesterday - went shopping in the morning, 40d but don't bother using the air con driving as not hot enough. 3 pm my little dog Scruf, who has been mentioned before & has a better cricket brain than our selectors or Paine tells me it is time to join him outside & watch the cricket together. A beautiful balmy mid 30's in the shade, set up outside with a TV, a cold one, lounge back & watch the cricket. 5.30 pm temps dropped to high 20's & time to put the whole mussels on the BBQ soaked in garlic, chilli, herbs, olive oil & red wine. Knock them off & then barramundi wrapped in alfoil with herbs,butter & white wine served with potato & green salad. All washed down with a cold one or 2. Finally Paine's painful batting ends & NZ put in - temps down to a wonderful mid 20's & watch NZ being put to the sword. Will phone the NZ tribe tomorrow & have some fun. Now Paddles, how could you not have a better day watching cricket than that - unless of course you are a kiwi. Do you live in Perth, JJ? If you do, do you watch the cricket live?

+xCould be lots of work for Lyon and Labuschagne today, by the looks of it (or Wade lol). The quicks will come out blazing (the two we have left), Kiwis certainly don't want to lose an early wicket or two here, before the conditions slow them down and the ball softens. If they cling on anything could happen. Our biggest hope in that situation would be that conditions start helping spin. Found an interesting stat re our "flat pitches". In the last 20 yrs...32% of test matches in NZ have been draws. In Aus over the same period less than 16% of matches have been draws. So statistically drawn matches are twice as likely in Kiwiland. Historically it's much worse. Of all matches in Aus (since1877) a little under 19% have been draws. For the Kiwis (since1930) 41% of matches in NZ have been draws, though rain affected matches are probably more common there. Surely not to that extent though. So much for our "flat tracks"? Interesting data comparing Kiwi and Aus pitches.

JJ, you complained about Paine’s slow strike rate.
Apart from Starc swinging, I think most batters had slow SRs who scored 30 or more runs.

Souther’s second quicker bouncer at 129kph got onto Warner too quickly. So he played a pull where it hit the top of the bat for a dolly catch.
