I’ve been a long term subscriber to the economist, a traditional centre right publication. Although as they’ve been obviously analytically critical of Trump’s shambolic presidency, his obvious lies to make money about election fraud and inaction on climate, I’m probably classified as a communist now according to all this ‘leftist’ garbage that gets thrown around now. Utterly inane.

People have been calling Gladys a communist.  It's just become a throwaway insult now that doesn't have any real connection to its actual meaning.

That's not true at all, no one knows how safe anywhere is. It's all a probabilities game.

You can make this criticism with every health measure they've put in place, the only "perfect" measure is to keep every single person isolated for 14 days, test every single person at the end and the ones that test positive those people until they test negative. This is simply infeasible.

It's also infeasible to wear a mask when eating, so health departments have traded off the increased risk of infecting the people you're sitting with while trying to reduce the risk of people spreading it to strangers who you may be standing near when you go to the counter/bar. Yes everyone will be contacted and told to isolate if a covid case is in the restaurant while you're there regardless of whether you're sitting with them or not but the less infected the better.

The same thing for the masks themselves, ideally everyone would be wearing n95 masks and face shields and other PPE that the doctors and nurses treating patients have. that's not feasible either so a simple rule where there's a distribution of a small number of people wearing highly effective masks, a majority wearing reasonably effective masks (surgical masks and the like) and a small number wearing things that are basically ineffective is better than nothing at all.

Mate, sorry but that's just silly. If they're worried about transmission then nobody should be allowed to socialise like we were last night.

I know what you're saying but this bar was literally 7 or so metres wide by say 15 metres. There were probably 60 patrons. We could sit at tables (30 of us) literally 3m metres from the bar without masks and when we got to get a drink we had to wear masks. It's nonsensical.

I know why. It's so they keep the economy going. Fine but don't try and bullshit me (the health dept not you) about how I need to wear a mask indoors to be safe. It's dead set retarded.

If anyone had Covid in that room last night we're all infected today.

Not only that I'd have thought 'fascist' would be a more accurate description. At least they got the 'dictator' bit right for Dan.

A dictator can be on either side of the political spectrum though. With 'Dictator Dan' the Murdoch press was dressing him up as Chairman Mao.

AJF is anti-cloth mask and pro-disposable mask based on the earlier discussion.

Previously he was arguing that ALL masks are nothing more than a "placebo" so I don't believe this is true.

He changed his tune after getting caught out by his own sources.

I literally don't disagree with or dispute anything that you have provided links to regarding masks.

Again, you claimed that the sources you provided prove that mask wearing provides nothing "more than a placebo" effect.  This is a lie.

A lot of energy seems to get expended on arguing about masks. I can't help but think whether you should be wearing masks or not is a proxy for another issue.

You only have to look at how Republicans and the right in America and elsewhere believe mandated masks are an affront to 'freedom'.

Is that what people are really arguing here?

The issue is there are 10s of thousands of restaurants, you're going to find venues and scenarios that make the rules look stupid. Early in the NSW outbreak there was a person that caught it from a cafe despite sitting outside. She likely got it while inside paying at the same time as the infectious person.

Again there's not "safe or not safe", it's a spectrum of risk and there are trade-offs everywhere.

Obviously I disagree. The NSW government has traded on the fact the 'we're keeping NSW open' during this whole thing which is why nonsensical rules like this are in place. Witness Gladys the other day.

Journo: Why is Bunnings open when in Qld and Victoria they're not?
Gladys: Next question.

That was her answer. No explanation just a flat out refusal to answer.

Apparently Delta is so transmissable that you can get it literally walking by someone or from being in a hotel room on the next floor so it makes no sense to have anyone out at all.

I'm not complaining about being out. I'd rather be out than at home but I'm just saying they can't be acting all deadly serious about this when they have holes in their plan so massive you could drive a semi trailer through them.

(Also what happened to the 2 square metre rule inside of venues. That's all gone now.)

Let's be honest If you didn't want transmission you'd lock every bastard up for 2 weeks with no exceptions except getting food. (Not saying they should do that BB.)

Just look at the construction sector getting away with blue murder. A barista or hairdresser making $600 a week can go and get fucked but a carpenter, plumber or sparky making $120k a year can carry on.  What a joke.

Strong recommend you get onto ABC's iView and check out the recent Four Corners episode about the vaccine rollout if that's the sort of thing that floats your boat. They pull their punches with their paymaster delicately, of course, but still a good watch.

Edit: Let me cut out the middle man, here's the episode: https://www.abc.net.au/4corners/lockdown-australias-vaccine-failures-covid/13480556

You do realise multi-ply surgical masks are not considered 'standard cloth masks' right?

I have said it before and I will say it again, dont argue with me, argue with the US CDC who has this to say about surgical masks:

Filtration: Does NOT provide the wearer with a reliable level of protection from inhaling smaller airborne particles and is not considered respiratory protection

Still on masks, US CDC is now recommending that you combine a surgical mask with a cloth mask to improve protection (ie double mask) but if you have a N95 use it by itself.

The same link says surgical masks protect against large droplets whilst protecting others from the wearers' respiratory emissions. In other words, surgical masks provide some protection to the community if all people wear them.

dont argue with me, I provided the actual quote from the CDC regarding filtration and you will note that the US CDC says surgical masks are "not considered respiratory protection" which you would think might be important if you dont want to catch a respiratory disease like Covid.

Protection against large droplets is pretty useless considering covid particles are 0.1 microns in size, (that is 0.0001mm). Science ain't your thing chum, best you give it away.

If surgical masks only provide some protection if everybody is wearing them properly, and there is strong evidence that not everybody is wearing a surgical mask, and strong evidence that not all those wearing them are doing so properly, then they dont provide some level of protection

You are arguing something "in theory" or "in lab" which is invalidated by the real world circumstances

Can they work? Yes. Do they work in Australia's circumstances? No

CDC - Difference between respiratory Protection and Source Control

"If worn properly, a surgical mask is meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching the wearer’s mouth and nose. Surgical masks also act as source control, just as any other mask. While they are evaluated by the FDA for their ability to protect against contact with liquids, surgical masks are not designed to filter or block very small particles from the air that the wearer is breathing. Unlike respirators, they do not provide complete protection because they do not form a tight seal against the wearer’s face."

So, whilst a surgical mask does not provide complete 'respiratory protection' they do assist in limiting spread via source control.

Explain to me how something is pointless just because it doesn't provide "complete protection". Neither do lockdowns or the vaccine.

89% of Australians polled three days ago have had or want to have a vaccine: https://essentialvision.com.au/uptake-of-a-covid-19-vaccine-11

Interesting to see stronger support for the anti lockdown protesters from Greens voters than either of the big two parties: https://essentialvision.com.au/stance-on-anti-lockdown-protests

Views from each state on how their state government has handled the latest outbreak: https://essentialvision.com.au/state-government-handling-of-latest-covid-19-outbreaks

38% saying the federal government has done a good job with covid, 35% say bad, and 28% neither: https://essentialvision.com.au/federal-government-response-to-covid-19-15
