Cricket especially the BB is in crowd and ratings steep fall.....Super Rugby is in small decline this season to date after a growth spurt when the 9 Stan took over broadcast ... Super V8's were down the previous year...

Tis interesting as a broader question is say traditional sport under threat from non sporting actives and E-games... I have three boys in their 30"s and non watch sport one is into egames... another into broad games.... the other not into sport at all....

I just wonder aloud if we are well into a demographic shift and sport is being replaced by other actives

I can see where your coming from Middy.
Mind you part from your own lads what they are into.
The BB is slowing up imo because the fad is passing by.
The original ODI's had their peak and decline as well - thats what happens with these kind of formats.
Plus I think covid has bite every sport in general till we get oursleves back to some form of new normality.
Can't agree on Super Rugger, been declining for years, worse than our AL.
Long before covid and the Stan move didn't increase it at all that I could see.
They are working on recovering but their demographic is small in the big picture.
I know quite a number of private school type parents around me, die hards, where's the youth growth barring pac islanders and white anglos like NRL.
I can't see good growth spikes the coming years barring the International games.
Their medium packages are their lifelines.

Going back to young un's/your 3, I'll pass on my observations from 3 of mine. (17/22/29)
Avid avid passionate football players and followers.
So so many of their mates are as well for thats who they hang with.
If any couch inside activity is happenning its FIFA or COD.
They watch EPL/Liga/Bundas/SerieA CL/Europa you name it they will be watching at home/recorded or on their mobiles.
Out at nights on the weekends they will get to a screen somewhere to watch football or get back to our place with a few of their mates and watch till dawn barring those that fall asleep.

Are they avid AL/APL followers/watchers ?
No they are not, they'll watch it if I'm watching it but I don't have paramount now.
They used to come to games with me when younger but always complain its not good enough/crap.
They still would go to a derby due to its early days specticles but if something else is on hey they'll pass.
I don't know what it is but like them hardly any of their football mates talk about AL/APL or attend.
Its not grabbing them.

My household with them has a large network of football followers.
They all have kayo/optus sport and whatever app or use live streams.
I notice some are getting into the NBL a little more nowadays, the USA stuff leading onto ours I agree Davide mentions.
The yank SM side of that is pretty huge and drawcard.

Mate, I dont want to contradict you and Midfielder but next month the AFL and NRL are starting up again and while they may have a slightly smaller than average attendance this year due to COVID, there will still be thousands upon thousands of people attending live matches. Its not a sport problem in Australia its a football problem ......

It will be interesting to track.
Could well be that the NRL and AFL are going to time the start of their seasons to perfection, and that we just ended up with a bum deal.

MSC no prob yes I hear you.
Funnily I don't even think of those 2 games - especially you southerners and west re AFL.
(its such a no game to me)
Sure as bettega mentions they are coming up and probably the timing is perfect for them as we are finally coming "out" of these weird last 2 odd years.
Eggball obviously will have its crowds down there and way over there whereas NRL's only major attendance is the big games ala SOO and some derbies.
Many Clubs have small crowd attendance imo but thats us up north.
Must be something about the weather and or the Fox coverage is brilliant and re "time" factor NRL games are 80mins so TV is easy whereas HTF do you people sit through AFL's game time like Gridiron, just takes way too long.
Going back to your comment football problem, yes I agree but thats because the "show" is not delivering.
The other 2 have their best players in the game every week, what does afl compete with but themselves, its polished and run well as we all can see.
NRL with its lack of attendance and bugger all growth, with this VLandys runs like a clock tbh despite all their internal probs.
He forces the good talk and is visually pro active, in the media.
At least it has internationals if you can call it as such, some variety.
Our game stutters/stops/has no plan B it seems/the front suits are ghosts when in need to front the public to present anything that their on the job, so imo we're our own worst enemy.
The NRL/AFL supporter don't walk away, they mightn't attend games (NRL types) but they watch on Fox so the numbers are ok.
The pubs/Clubs are flowing by the way Sat arvos evenings.
Good commentry, not amatuer hour.
We have a divide as you know ol sockha new sockha.
Now the new sockha supporters have drifted away.
The ol sckha ones are there and walked away but not watching enough.
Yet both tribes watch bucket loads of football online.
and both tribes are at each other.
Who's to blame in the big picture ? all in our game incl us BUT our Governance is no where on par compared to AFL/NRL.

Christ its a mess yet we all can see Football here can grow but no one knows how and there's too many chiefs/layers and no one listens to the indians lol.......

another pov......re ratings etc......
Surely those who have paid to kick in to broadcast incl setting up keepup have worked with numbers of the past good and bad.
They can't get a app up and running well enough and at the same time limit viewership and 1 FTA on Sat nights.
Wouldn't you be considering, you know seeing our season is all over the shop due to covid when commencing, cancelling games, move here move there.
What does that do to your target audience ? piss's them off right.
I'd be throwing up every game on 10 mate/ or Bold or whatever other names so its FOC !

Get people engaged - excited - hey FFS they are throwing out the bait under dire circumstances this is great and copping the hit for now.
Surely they are seeing P+ hasn't got many subscribers to date and at the same time annoyed ones.

Seriously, these people need to only look what retailers like Harvey Norman/Supercheap/Bunnings does to hook customers.
Lost leaders for x time whilst you get your shit together.
Well get games up FOC for all to see.

What else can they do mate? They have been giving away tickets at NPL prices and still only 250 people went to watch WU tonight..... If a couple of thousand fans aren't even willing to go out on a brilliant summer arvo to watch their  club who to is going to watch on tellie?

TBH i haven't seen anything much to attract members let alone neutrals........
The Clubs send out their weekly emails etc but thats to paid members.
The gen public wouldn't have much of a clue let alone general football followers.
Whatever the neutrals would have seen wouldn't be making much impression as we're seeing.
So throwing all games up for free viewing is about the best bait they can throw now to me for its not gonna improve crowd wise much.

Why are they playing so many games all of a sudden? Is their a reason for the rush to get the season finished like last year or is it a marketing thing?

It was a marketing ploy - Play 60 matches in 28 days with general admission at $20 each. Clearly it didn't work and it is made worse by the inconsistent scheduling and lack of advertising, not to mention some having an effect on team performance.
They were considering reducing the season to 22 rounds - 1 home and 1 away against each club - back in late December/early January, which is what they should have done. Not to mention that there is the Asian Champions League Qualifiers in March and the Group Stage in May so that only complicates the issue even further.

I was curious to see how the season is unfolding so decided to jump on the official A League website. Spent a good few minutes on google trying to find it using all kinds of keywords and just kept getting bounced from site to site. Even tried finding it through the MV website assuming it had a backlink but no luck

Decided to try a website called keepup, which had a link to the "A Leagues" but linked back to itself. After a bit of clicking around discovered this generic sports site that also has the premier league results is the official website of the A League. Or rather A Leagues

Spent a year away from the game and can't find the fucking thing

Some might think you're exaggerating, but on a few occasions since the new year, I've tried looking up a bit of info about the A-League, and could not get a nibble on google at all.
Sometimes it was to double check whether a fixture was still going ahead or postponed.  You'd think Keep UP would be on top of that sort of info, but on every occasion, it was severly lacking.

Back to ratings, and last night's game got 80k, I'm guessing that's 5 city metro.

For the umpteenth time in a row, SBS beat Ten on Saturday night.  Incredibly, both Bold and Peach were just 1% behind Ten's main channel for ratings for the night.  It's extraordinary that that can happen.

42k a new record low for an A-League on FTA.
There was a time, about six years ago, that if we got a rating of 42k on Fox, we'd think, geez, that's pretty poor.  Of course, a few years after that, the threshold had halved, we were regularly rating around the 18k mark before Fox ditched us.
How low is 42k?  Well, considering it's the main channel of a commercial FTA in prime time, it's extremely low.  I would go as far as to say that for a whole week of viewing, no other show on prime time on a main commercial FTA station would rate that low.

The same night, on Fox (available to one quarter of all Australian households), we see:
Death in Paradise  44k
Selling Houses Australia 41k
AFLW  32k

On the multis:
Hey Duggee  89k
Peppa Pig  84k

If the main commercial FTA is only getting 42k, the one guarantee I can give is that the number watching on Paramount is a fraction of that.

Its awesome to hear all this

Well let’s not forget we were at war with the media then our own fans and even each other. It is what it is I’m gonna follow and probably other dummies and we won’t be where we could be but at least we can watch our games each week (unless it gets postponed)

Thats true. War with the media, war with Rebecca Wilson. War with each other. War with Vladmir Putin and Russia lol.

And yet we blame anything and everything on why the A-league gets meagre ratings lol.

Get rid Of Gallop, the A league will improve.

Gallop is gone, nek minute, a league is still the same LoL

I've had the same experience.

Tried looking for the ALeague - results, fixture, teams, whatever - on GOOGLE, and cannot find it. Fuck me.

I'm confused. Is English your 4th language?

I literally type in "aleague fixtures" "aleague ladder" and get graphics and tables at the top of the google page that I don't even have to click into if I don't want. I do it a few times a week and it shows what games are postponed too.

Are you using a VPN set to Bhutan?

Ok, care to offer your opinion on the ease of a casual or new interest locating and identifying the official a league website?

Cos ya know, keepup makes total sense aye

yes, you can find the fixture

but it appears on generic websites like eurosport and theroar.

finding a website for the aleague is a mystery. This keepup thing is an embarrassment.

Hey dickhead, I have made several posts round here criticising KeepUp.
Th person I responded to said they couldn't find fixtures even when they googled it

finding a website for the aleague is a mystery. This keepup thing is an embarrassment.

Looking at the first three options that came up, as in the top three options (the next three are no better), we have:
 - Eurosport - might be up to date with the fixture, but I'm not going to there to look
 - a press release from November last year
 - the Roar would be just showing the original fixture released last year, which, as we all know, is pretty useless at the moment.

As others have intimated, Keep UP doesn't even come up as an option.
That's ok, I'll go there anyway, but the crucial point is that at no stage have I ever been able to get clarification as to whether a game has been postponed.  I'll hear about it first on twitter, I'll go to Keep UP, and there will be absolutely nothing on it.
Also, I'll go there to check injury updates - nothing.
