Thanks for answering lads I’m up for a discussion and loving hearing different points.
as a 90s kid i got into afl through my family but played football on weekends. In 2005 I followed liverpool because I loved Gerrard I would watch as many matches as I could (05 champions league run has a special place in my heart. Then when I finished school I drifted from afl and followed Melbourne heart. Now days I’m only interested in melbourne city and Australian football (thanks to this forum) I go out of my way to watch the Aussies abroad when they are on tv.

+x+x+x+x+x+xOne major problem is that there is still no SmartTV app for the major brands. If a person owns a TV that doesn't have the Paramount+ app, they are unlikely to become a subscriber. Many people see getting a Chromecast or other third party work-around as being too much hassle so they just don't bother. A mate of mine watches AL games on the budget Aldi TV he bought for his kid's rumpus room rather than get a chromecast for the far superior Samsung in his living room. Watching on a phone, tablet or computer may be ok for some people, but for many it's unacceptable. This issue alone would eliminate a large portion of potential subscribers. Google TV dongle. $80 one off payment (less than half the cost of Apple TV). Every Streaming app you need all in one place. NO smart TV needed. For all of us on this board, it's a non issue, we've got access one way or another. But when you're talking about the general population - it's a real issue. Every barrier put in place diminishes the potential audience by lots. Do you mean like only having 11 Australian franchises the audience is supposed to care about? We are seemingly stuck with that barrier for a long, long time to come. I’m just going to ask.. we go on about promotion and relegation and how we should not exclude clubs. But yet the Australian cup is open house and ratings and attendance isn’t that great. what would change for a regular season match? There are no guarantees in life, and this is no exception, no one should think that P&R fixes things automatically. For me personally, it's a matter of principle and fairness. The AFL/NRL (and American way more generally) of doing things is that some are allowed to sup at the big person's table. This effectively enshrines "bigness" in perpetuity because no one can ever share in the revenue streams that the elite competition makes compared to all other levels. In our case, one person was given absolute power to decide who was in and who was out, those on the outer were consigned to being bit players for evermore - not because they necessarily did anything wrong - but because one person deemed it would be thus. In reality, there is zero reason why, say, a club like Western United, should be allowed the privilege ahead of anyone else, or why, say, the Mariners should be allowed in ahead of another 20 clubs who'd have the capacity to earn the same revenue if they too were playing in the top tier. So at the heart of it for me it's a matter of principle. It's just plain wrong professional football should be structured in this manner.

MCG thanks agreed no worries..... I do recall some of your history having seen it before so yer cool. I knew for sure like most down there have to support afl, glad to see you saw the light and LFC :) and Heart actually even though its not my mojo overall. bettega mentions what I had in my head earlier thinking to say which is spot on, nothing is garanteed and our game has never had its act together due to all the dramas we've all bantered on forever and a day and thats the thing. Talking Pro sport putting aside all the backroom politics/shennanigans/stuff ups yaddayadda at least they have their game up front and centre and accepted/known top comp with some form of respect. We don't have that and with all the numbers that are involved in football right around the country its ridiculous might I add. Those other sports also don't have the liberty of P/R like our game is known for. Wouldn't you think what that would be like to see IF the game and its constichuants were linked bottom to top top to bottom. Funding spread where it needs to be more, better coaching for all Jnrs, a system that each State works similar/together, decrease some of the layers that are holding back letting go. Build it I think it has chance to grow but will take time - humans dislike change but we love competition. P/R battles excite, it just may bring in a few more year by year.
Love Football

I would love to see p/r happen but I just don’t think we have any suits that can make it happen. I’d go as far to say I can’t really remember when a good decision was made by admin. Everything is a failure perth glory doesn’t have a stadium, victory doesn’t have its own training base, paramount and keep up are lackluster western United MacArthur.. lucky the sport is entertaining to us hardcores

Dont worry about everything outside your club.... All the other franchises failing around you should be a good thing.. easier for CFG to win.. Don't worry about the "suits", most of them dont even watch the games nor agonise over the Socceroos like we do.... They are producers on a TV show and just look at the bottom line. Full Pro/Rel may never happen IMO but you just focus on the club you love, whatever league it is in and attend/watch as much as you can.

A while ago it was mentioned that paramount Plus would be getting an App on foxtel boxes so that you can access paramount straight from Foxtel.
Does anyone know if/when this is happening? Would make a world of difference with people that already have Foxtel and want to watch A-league games.

This news is only marginally related to the broadcast of the A-League, but it looks like the AFL is staying with Foxtel and Seven. I'm hearing mixed news on the length of the deal and the money involved. Looks like at least a few billion, but not sure of the exact details.

How does that backfire for them? I realise we all hate the AFL no matter what on this site, but seriously, I had to laugh at the suggestion that this deal could be "risky" for them.

It's a long deal, and it starts well into the future, goes from 2025-31. So it's true that a bit of risk attaches to it. The dollars involved are huge, almost so big they are difficult to comprehend. It's actually $200 million per annum higher than what the NRL gets. As for football, combining both the A-League and our national teams, this deal is over 10x the size on an annualised basis. There was a time when we thought we were rapidly closing the gap on the big winter sports. When Lowy signed our first proper broadcast deal, it was worth $17 million per annum. At the time, the AFL was in the final year of a deal worth $100 million per annum, or under 6x more. 20 years on (in 2025), and the AFL deal will be worth over 10x more. In other words, whatever promise was held of making up the gap all those years ago - it's gone. Today, the gap between the two leagues is as massive as it has ever been and the reality is that as of today, there is zero prospect of making up that difference in the foreseeable future.

Could be a record low rating for an AFL grand final Mr TV Australia@MrTVAusThe breakdowns for yesterday’s #AFLGF (not including the match) would also be concerning for the AFL and Seven. It appears there was a ‘lack of interest’ from many from the get-go! eg. record-low for the Pre Match (despite being hailed as the best ever) too.

+xCould be a record low rating for an AFL grand final That' s interesting . I suppose having no team from Melbourne proper and a team from Sydney/NSW where few care about the sport , were probably contributing factors . Not to mention that from what I saw of the final score , it was a blowout and probably barely a contest . Didn' t they just sign a multi - Billion dollar broadcasting deal ? I have a feeling they might just be ok ...

Some of the crowds at AFLW on weekend 1,345, 2028, 2007....that's also fluffing numbers. Unbelievable considering how much money and exposure they've had pumped in

Get a massive deal like that, the broadcaster then owns the football code, shows no fta games. Let's hope it's the case with Afl anyway.

+xAnybody know the ratings for last night? 99k Ten (main channel) finished last of the five channels. SBS was able to sneak into the top 20 with "Secrets of the Royal Palaces".
