Brisbane is in the box seat in a one horse race to host the 2032 Summer Olympics

By Tracey Holmes for The Ticket and ABC Sport,
The Olympic rings pictured in front of the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The International Olympic Committee has named Brisbane as its "preferred bid".(Reuters: Denis Balibouse)
"And the winner for the right to host the Games of the 35th Olympiad is … Brisbane!"Almost. Nearly. Right now, it is a one-horse race but anything, or something, might happen; unlikely though. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has designated Brisbane's bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games "Preferred Bid Status" meaning it is the only one of numerous bid cities that has progressed to the next phase called "targeted dialogue".It will be followed by "final negotiations", and then the rubber-stamping exercise of declaring Brisbane the winner will happen at an IOC session as early as the Tokyo Olympics in July, although with COVID restrictions it may be later in the year.IOC President Thomas Bach said discussions, in the early hours of the morning Australian time, were "intensive".In the end though, there was no doubt.
Thomas Bach gesturing while giving a speech.
Thomas Bach said the IOC will enter targeted dialogue with the Brisbane bid team.(Reuters: Denis Balibouse)
"The Future Host Commission recommended to the Executive Board to enter into a targeted dialogue with Brisbane 2032 and the Australian Olympic Committee for the Games of the 35th Olympiad," Mr Bach said. The Chair of the IOC's Future Host Commission, Kristin Kloster Aasen, was asked if there was any reason why Australians should not spend today celebrating."This is a decision made today that takes the Australian project into a dialogue," she said."Depending on the outcome of the targeted dialogue and the recommendation that we might give to the Executive Board for them maybe to put the Brisbane project forward for an election at the session. In a one-horse race it appears it will be difficult to lose from here.In changing the election system to eradicate any potential blocs forming, or dare-it-be-said bribes being offered, the Future Host Commission was made up of five IOC members who cannot be members of the executive board. It enters into a series of conversations with interested cities then reviews the criteria before making its recommendations to the executive board.By the time the members get to vote at the IOC session, they no longer have a choice. The system is the brainchild of the IOC Vice-President who also happens to be the President of the Australian Olympic Committee, John Coates.
John Coates stands in front of a lecturn and speaks.
John Coates established the current system for voting for the next host city.(ABC News: David Mark)
According to most Australians, it is a brilliant system. However, some others have been wondering whether the system was designed with a potential host city already in mind, a host city with an already mapped-out plan complete with support from all levels of government, backing from the private sector and 'independent' support from organisations such as the World Bank, the International Labour Organisation and numerous UN Agencies. Brisbane's bid was "excellent" and "very advanced" according to Ms Kloster Aasen, Vice-President of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and IOC member."The mandate of the commission allows us to assess the global context, including social, economic and geo-political aspects and future challenges for the Olympic Games such as climate change," she said.

and much more........................ follow the link.s

Hopefully they don't squander the opportunity to upgrade/build a home of football in Qld that seats more than 25 people.

This is a testament to how unwanted, unloved and how shit the Olympics are now when they're giving Brisbane (the most boring capital city in Australia) preferred bidder status for the Olympics.

There is a reason no other country has put their hand up. Hosting the Olympics is simply not worth it. The benefits often put forward are proven to be incorrect or minimal time and time again. It doesn't make money. It doesn't create any permanent jobs. It costs a fortune and usually creates massive debts to the city/country through infrastructure and venue projects. It makes the city borderline un-liveable during the event, due to changed traffic conditions and general congestion. If Brisbane does get the Olympics, my advice to any locals would be to book an interstate/overseas holiday for a month or so during that period.

Temporary stadium that will be reduced to 20,000 afterwards (and it can’t be oval for the modern Olympics)

I read that Albion was being targeted for athletics, which means an athletics track. So what would the proposed configuration be after the Olympics, would the athletics track be removed and stands brought closer to the pitch?

I'll move to this thread.  :)

The International Olympic Committee is trying to reduce the cost of hosting the games to the host city and in discussions they said not to build the big stadium but upgrade Metricon instead.  They weren't worried about 52k for the opening and closing ceremonies.  I'm sure it isn't settled yet but in my view it is good to see them wanting venues that have a legacy other than as a white elephant.

I put it there knowing that this forum wills always gravitate to talking about the AFL whenever there is a chance for football to take the main stage in this country.
I can also predict that there will be an out-pouring of bile and hatred about a State upon which the majority of the haters have never set foot.

Any place else, there would be an overwhelming tide of positive comments about having the world's best U23 players conducting a tournament on their doorstep.  A tournament watched and enjoyed by the world.

The Olympics lost their way quite some time ago, and it’s becoming evident by the lack of interest in hosting them. The investment isn’t worth the return.

The Tokyo games struggles due to COVID have taken even more momentum out of the Olympics, and it will be up to Paris and LA to resurrect the dwindling fortunes, but it’s not the first time that it has been in this position.

Let’s remember that when LA hosted the games in 1984, it was the games that finally got back interest from many stakeholders after 3 events prior with issues (1972 hostage situation, 1976 unfinished stadium and financial mess, 1980 boycotts). LA showed the event could make money because of a similar concept to what the IOC are discussing now (ie. using venues) and creating additional commercial opportunities to reinvent the movement. It’s been a rollercoaster since, with increased security concerns and escalating infrastructure spending to host the games to try and outdo past events, 2008 (Beijing) and 2014 (Sochi) in particular.

As for these games if they come to Brisbane, the limited investment in new facilities will reduce the events legacy, but  trying to play football matches in Ipswich does raise the possibility the something may at least be on the horizon, but hard to see much else.

Overall, comparing the excitement for the Olympics in the compared to years past, it’s a very different picture. They have a lot of work to do to make them relevant again.

What are you even on about?

Metricon Stadium, Cbus Super Stadium, Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium, Suncorp there's also plans to build a new stadium for the new second NRL Brisbane team in Ipswich.

Suncorp is a great stadium... but my front lawn has a better pitch.

Melbourne = the city that worships a sport that the rest of the world doesn’t even know about, or care about.

The Olympics = biggest global sporting event, 200+ countries cover it, second biggest women’s football

I can’t stand AFL, with the Olympics certainly a far bigger deal.

The reality is though that one of those doesn’t tend to cost multi billions for a 16 day event though. The Olympics are losing their appeal, and the fact the interest in hosting them is so low.

The awarding of the games for 2024, 2028 and now likely 2032 have all essentially been very different approaches to who got the event. The IOC is trying all it can to consult to get countries interested, including advising to cut any new venues and use existing facilities. They know that a significant amount of confidence has been lost, with the appetite to carry the risk but not worth the hassle in most cases.

Still good that Australia could well see it happen here again, but the lack of excitement about the idea seems to certainly raise many doubts.

I’m sure AFL makes up for it siphoning money from the public purse each and every year.

You could also add that the Olympics represent the epicentre of sports that no one (in Australia) cares about.
Football and Basketball would be reasonably high, and then everything else, no one gives a damn about.
I mean seriously, who the hell cares whether we win medals in shooting, yachting, canoeing, trampoulining or BMX, or whatever other silly sport has been included.
All that's missing is John Cleese's silly walks championship (hang on, that might actually be in the Olympics).
But...if we can get a couple of stadiums out of it, I'm all in favour.

You’d expect Townsville will get a look in - $300m+ on a stadium needs something and the Sunshine Coast will have a 15,000 stadium by then as well.
