They really need to pick either Hobart or Launceston if they want to succeed. Full arse one, not half arse both. Not even WU tried to cover that much area.
Hobart and Launceston don't even like each other. They don't even drink the same beer.
It's roughly the equivalent distance of CCM joining forces with Wollongong and equally as stupid.

I agree 100% and even hope to see a North v South Tassie derby some day, too often Australian football has been so vague in their pitch as to who they represent they end up representing nobody, but sadly too many aren't as ambitious.

Yep agree to start with 1 team only. If a Tassie club can survive it would steal some potential afl fans to support football rather than footy, before the afl eventually form a new foot handball club there

There's gotta be a team in Hobart before Launceston, but there's no denying there's a serious demand for football down here. I've been based on the West Coast of TAS since Covid hit, and from the various games I've been to, there's been good crowds and plenty of banter/atmosphere. There's a large fan base potential in Hobart due to the amount of NPL clubs there, and I've no doubt that those fans would be willing to continue doing their NPL commitments, as well as supporting a TAS A-League team too.

Yes, please!

One team for the whole island gives an “us vs the rest” approach, but, with some foresight, north vs south would be perfect, and wouldn’t need to be the generic “Launceston vs Hobart” branding, but engage the surround towns and regions.

Obviously the decision makers need to consider what the teams will bring to the national league as a whole; whether indeed it makes the league more attractive and marketable from a sales, investment and broadcasting point of view. Crowds I feel are secondary, and they can easily be built with the right exposure. From my memories of living in Hobart, the folks there are itching to get behind any type of football team in a national league, whether A-League, AFL, etc..

I think we need to be open to the prospect of “smaller” teams - ie. teams from smaller catchments. If we’re serious about a national second division, it’s likely that you might see teams like this fluctuate between both the first and second tiers. Of course, they will also provide pathways to Tasmanian players that could very well punch above their weight.

Glad this is being discussed.

If history has taught us anything, having too wide or generic a region is just as bad as having too small a region. Teams have traditionally gone better when they have picked one location and built up fans, which has the flow on of fans from surrounding regions following suite.

Brisbane really hit another gear after changing from Qld Roar and establishing a base
SFC when they took the eastern half of the city
WSW when they took the western half of the city (and even they had to neglect the SW because it was too large an area)

If you look at teams that have struggled
Heart - No defined area, which has seen them not have the expected growth and is still an issue causing them to head south east
WU  - Too large an area that represents no one
North Queensland - Another generic region name, should have probably gone with Townsville and expanded out.

So i think calling a team Hobart or Launceston and building out from that will be a really good strategy. The romantic in me would like both cities to one day have a team, but realistically that is not likely to be feesible.

The lucky thing for them is that Western United is such a vague and meaningless name they could relocate their club to anywhere on the planet without having to order new stationery.

Turn that argument on its head and ask why the AFL doesn't have a club there. The place is an economic basket case dependant on tax handouts from the mainland.

This. The AFL already subsidizes Gold Coast, The Sydney teams, half the Melbourne teams.... Tasmania is a stretch too far even for them.
This is why they've continuously tried to relocate a Melbourne based team there because it kills two birds..
New team = new problem for them. Big problem.
If however we do get the NSD in place then you'd hope natural progression would allow the possibly of a Tasmanian entity eventually making its way through. Forcing a franchise into there is a dumb idea...

We're one downturn in coal or iron prices from that being the case for the entire country outside of the Melbourne and Sydney metropolitan areas.

Team 14 should be either Tassie or Brisbane 2. I fully support a Tassie team, but not without a rectangular stadium.

Whenever I see these discussions about hand picking where franchises should go, it underscores to me that there will never be P&R.

All of these prospective teams should start with a team (or at least a youth team) for a couple of years in their local NPL, not necessarily at the top.

Imagine if WU were granted an NPL license which would have turned into an A-League license upon completion of their stadium.

Didn't Lederer say that the new approach was geographic based? i.e. they would say they want a team from a certain area and bids would come from there? This might be why there is the Canberra/Tasmania discussion.

P&R would be ideal, but we are working in an imperfect world. So long as they expand and then move to P&R, I'm okay with that.
