How would that performance go against Japan, home or away?

🙄

Yeah not great however chalk and cheese the conditions.

Not to mention either that they're probably saying the same thing after copping a 1-0 loss at home to Oman.

So much underestimating of opponents/conditions/circumstances.

This was 2 extra points we did not pick up last WCQs against Thailand.

Mooy's vision is just terrible..he only looks to pass side way and backward. There r so much space and he decided to go backwards so frustrating to watch. Mabil everytime he touches the ball U already know he would lose the ball to the Vietnamese.

If his coach wasn't Ange, would he have been played for the 90? Having said that, he was still running at the end, more than Mabil and a couple of others.

I don’t know anyone other than Arnie who would play Rogic for 90 mins in any game. I still rate Rogic, for 60 mins if starting or for the last 30 minutes of a match. But Rogic is a liability after 60 minutes and while he gutsed it out and sparked up in the last ten minutes, to his immense credit, he went missing from 60 through to 80.

To his defense they were pressing him hard.

Agree with the Duke > Taggart comments. Certainly didn’t think that would be the case, but Duke has shown his worth

I don't think we'd perform that way against Japan. It'd be very different circumstances. Whenever we play Japan we still seem to be thereabouts and had some decent chances away last time. Undoubtedly our lapse of concentration will get harshly punished but Japan would also see space available for us. Whether we take the chance is another question. Our players are full time pros and I think they were satisfied with the 1:0 lead. Risky as hell and I hate it but they somehow knew what they were doing.

Have to laugh now though. My dream was always seeing Rogic get flogged to build fitness and tonight saw him get absolutely wrecked. I'd like to think his lung capacity will be bumped up for a while now.

He was playing number 6/8 and would've been coached to just control the ball and protect the lead, so passing it sideways and back is the game plan.

I feel the rule should be an arm out which gives advantage to defender is a penalty. However from that distance and it isn't hand to ball, I get why they didn't give it.

Live I thought he got hit on his left arm next to his body outside the box - so no penalty. The ball made it through and then hit his right arm inside the box. The ball actually pushed his arm away from his body. The shot they kept playing from behind the goal made it look a lot worse. A full stadium with the ref being pressured it may have been given and probably wouldn't have been overruled.

Saying that, it was a Sunday league standard pitch. The ball took an eternity to get anywhere, no wonder the passing was off - I'm calling it a home doctored pitch to suit the Vietnamese game plan - backs to the wall/ park the bus and try to score one on the counter.

You can't play proper football on a spongecake pitch like that. Mabil looked as if he'd never practiced 1v1 in his life and Rogic had the touch of an apprentice stone carver on his first day.

Good result, job done. Now let us never speak of this again.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

I agree the pitch was bad, but the Vietnamese had much better ball speed and first touch when in possession. Maybe because they are used to these pitches, but I would expect international players to be able to adjust better to the pitch.

Hats off to 10 for having all the AFC WCQs on 10Play. Fuck it, I'll try and stay up for the Japan v China game.

10 also promoting the A-League post-match as well, you love to see it.

yeah the first touch against china was pretty silky

I wouldn't read into that

easier to control an afl ball than a football on that pitch

What have we learnt in this window?

Grant can still offer something.
Sainsbury can pass well most of the time but poses so risk.
Souttar seems fine at this level and Degenek needs to be ready in case of injury.
Behich is a mainstay while Smith is OK and Elder should get more chances.
Mooy will be valuable in bigger games.
Irvine still coming back from the injury but was fine vs China.
Rogic building lung capacity and is best in games with space.
Hrustic is fine with space on a good pitch deep. Shouldn't have hung so high in the centre backs when played forward.
Jeggo is a sound squad member.
Dougall didn't feature which is a shame.
McGree didn't do much but will be in my squad every time.
Mabil plays best on good pitches.
Boyle is very very good.
Taggart is like Rogic and needs the open game.
Duke is really consolidating his place.
Hindsight but it was a mistake to bring Arzani and possibly Strain pending form and injury.
Genreau should have stayed in France.

Thanks to all the squad members who didn't play and supported the camp. They probably still love getting together albeit they missed out on playing. We got exactly what we wanted on this window and the gaps in our performances should leave the players wanting to do better.

A match not to remember but 3 points is 3 points, at we defended well given Vietnam would be a problem tonight so that was a positive takeaway.

But with the ball though? A rough night, alot of poor passing but even worse was the decision making from some players and at times it look uncoordinated, clearly they need some work and the China game kind of shaded our performance and you cant use the conditions a excuse for that given some of things should be efficient and in place.

I was frustrated by some of the subs too, dont understand why you bring the likes of Arzani, Genreau, Degenek into the squad and not play them, hopefully it doesnt effect their club appearances when they go back.

In terms of player performances, it really hurt us when Mooy came on he's so poor off the ball and Hrustic lost his influence in the game due to this.

McGree was a ghost for us as a inverted winger on the right and Mabil tried too hard in a difficult pitch

And Smith and Mabil didnt work on the left, Taggart couldnt drop in between the lines effectively like he did in the last game.

Boyle and an elite Daniel Arzani would take this team to another level.
