I said it was reckless to start the season so early when they first announced the fixtures, and now here we are. We're in the middle of a pandemic, why did they feel the need to rush the start of the season?? Reckless and stupid.

So you suggesting NSW should not follow the Doherty Report which was agree on national cabinet?

That's not necessarily true, from my reading of the report.

You can see it for yourself here: https://www.doherty.edu.au/uploads/content_doc/DohertyModelling_NationalPlan_and_Addendum_20210810.pdf

On page 36, if I understand it correctly they are saying that if there were still high caseloads (described as over 1,000 on the previous page) at a 70% adult vaccination rate moderate lockdowns would be required 81% of the time, and 49% for strict lockdowns. It drops to 51% for moderate lockdowns and 31% for strict at 80% vaccinated.

On the next page, the chart is in the case of low caseloads ("in the order of 10s or 100s") and for 70% vaccinated it says moderate lockdowns would be needed 38% of the time, and 23% for strict, but at 80% coverage it's only 8% for moderate lockdowns and 5% for strict.

The stats look better on the next two pages where light restrictions are always in place all the time, but still pretty bad with lockdowns needed 55% of the time at 70% vaccinated if there are high caseloads, although fortunately dropping to zero at 80%.

From my understanding, it seems that they are saying getting case numbers low as well as getting vaccine coverage up is needed to keep us out of lockdown, and that 80% is a shitload better than 70%. After reading this, I think opening up at 70% double dosed while still having four-digit case numbers would be a big mistake.

On page 38, if I understand it correctly they are saying that at a 70% adult vaccination rate, there is still a 55% chance that lockdowns would be required if there were still high case loads. Fortunately this drops to 0% at 80% coverage.

On the next page it has the same scenario with low caseloads, and the chance of lockdowns is 15% at only 60% coverage, and 0% chance at 70% or 80%.

From my reading, it seems that they are saying getting case numbers low first before opening up (through vaccination if need be) is worth it.

Im just going on what Gladys has been saying, even 70% is a soft version of restriction until things progress when they hit 80%, hopefully they hit a higher number as Delta is quite contagious with the unvaccinated especially when there is anti-vax around.
Eventually they might get to 85 or 90 so NSW will be looking good for vaccine numbers when they hit those 70/80% double dose.

Im sure case numbers won't be a problem when the numbers goes higher and higher if people are spending less time in hospital which is the point of phase C.

I noticed today in WA old friend Mark McGowan won't open for fully vaxxed NSW citizens for Christmas, which makes it very hard for the aleague to fixture games at the start of the season so not sure what happens to that situation now.

At the time they did the fixture, most of Australia looked fairly clear.

Perhaps the clubs or the FFA would put their hands up to be liable for any side affects players may get from mandating jabs?
i wonder if they would do that?

Like what side effects? You’re way more likely to get a blood clot from covid 19 itself then from astra zeneca vaccine. FA should have the stance that players are part of a society that is trying to reach herd immunity- if any players don’t like that stance maybe they can play football in a jungle somewhere instead

Reality is.. for young healthy people will only be mildly affected if they got the covid.
So vaxed or not may not make a difference.

Side affects? I assume there are some serious ones and some deaths.
Obviously there is a reason why the Pharma companies have been given indemnity.

Something like this??

1 in 74000. Extremely rare. Also completely treatable. The various painkillers and other meds these players take during a regular season carry far higher risks than the Pfizer jab.

The age group of the players and serious illness form covid is rare also.
But The occurrence isn’t the debate.
The question is will clubs or the league take liability for any side affects?
Especially if they mandate it.

Question for Club lawyers i guess? But clubs have great medical insurance for player injuries etc anyway so probably not a big deal in overall scheme of things. Only dumb anti-vax wankers like Troisi would try to sue his own club if he got serious side effects from vaccine- good luck to him 😜

The clubs/apl/fa may not need to mandate it. If the airlines and/or state borders set their own mandates, it effectively grounds any non vaccinated player. No club is going to take a player interstate, if 14 days of quarantine is required at both ends. The club may then be legally able to terminate a contract on the grounds that a player is unable to fulfil their duties as a player.

Absolutely someguy. End of debate, not double vaccined no fly, no play-no pay. Go and find a job in the forestry industry where vaccines will not be mandated simples!

I think that’s wrong.
I understand it may be an issue flying Internationally.
But within you’re own country ??

They’re not dealing with a high risk group.
If you’re vaccinated you can still get infected and transmit.

Let’s see what other sports do.

We're talking about short term here. What's going to happen over the next few months. Both federal and state governments and airlines have indicated that vaccinations may become required for interstate travel (especially WA) if you want to avoid mandatory quarantine periods. Non vaccinated people may still be able to travel interstate, it's the mandatory quarantine that will be the issue facing the clubs. Although fully vaccinated people can still contract covid, their chances are greatly reduced. Hypothetically, when BR play PG in Perth, any non vaccinated players would need to quarantine in Perth for 2 weeks. They may then need to quarantine in Brisbane for 2 weeks when they return. That player could be unavailable for 3-4 rounds as a result. That player would simply not be selected and dropped from the squad.
As for other sports, the other main sport that will need to tackle this issue is NBL but their season starts after ours so they'll be looking to see what we do.
5.7 billion people have already received at least one dose of vaccine world wide. Any players having a winge need to stop being cowards and get jabbed or seek another career. If us fans need to get vaccinated to attend games (which we 100% will), then the players can do the same.

It's almost 100% guaranteed that some form of vax passport will be in place, both for travel in and out of Australia, but also  for pretty much anything which has people attending en masse, like live sport.
The only question mark is how it will operate exactly, how  it will be administered/enforced, and how stringent the requirements will be, e.g. will one jab be enough?  or a negative test in the previous 24 hours or 48 hours or 72 hours, etc.
It's pretty clear now that neither Melbourne or Sydney is getting out of this anytime soon - both will rely on a vax passport to open up (and even then,  certain restrictions will remain).
No one's getting into WA without a vax passport, especially if they're from Sydney or Melbourne.
All professional athletes will need to be double jabbed - that's 100% certain to come in.
And no professional athlete will be allowed into the country without a double jab, 100% guaranteed.

November is the sweet spot for the season anyway. It should be the permanent start. You get all the clear air still, but the season ends in the cooler months which increases the quality as the season goes on.

Do they have high density in their overall population? Countries like Denmark with around 86% vaccinated have got life back to normal now and Isreal are doing booster which is showing some very promising results

It shows you cant copy and paste on a country and its clear Australia needs to forge its own path towards normality as each country has different circumstances.

Unless Singapore is being cautious in opening up unlike other countries which could be another factor too.

100% fair enough but sucks becuz the off season is long enough usually the AL season KO right after the AFL season meaning there is still something to watch/follow on the weekends

Interesting given there are 5 NSW based teams, they could play each other twice or 8 rounds.

This would push the date for NSW to travel to inter-state games well into January when hopefully interstate travel is allowed Australia wide.

fresh email from SFC....

Good news! Both the A-League and W-League opening rounds are locked in. We've moved the start of the season back to November when increased crowds are expected at games!

There’s a season opener against The Wanderers at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday 20 November for Steve Corica’s men, before a visit from Macarthur FC on Saturday 27 November.

The APL are today releasing all of Sydney FC’sfixtures up until December 27 – with the full campaign revealed in October.
