+x+x+x+x+x+xAsia was on track to do very well but definitely shat the bed in Rd 2 Japan being the biggest culprit by a mile but even SK should have done better Both teams, for all their improvements, still seem to just lack that clinical finish that has held them back forever Their players all play o/s in good teams but I don't think many are leaders in those teams (besides Son who I found disappointing) Regarding S.Korea there is 'no shame' in losing to Ghana they are a solid outfit and i reckon they will 2nd the group Oh yeah for sure I agree it's just you saw near the end they could have easily jagged at least one more That is football i guess - S.Korea imo are the strongest side from Asia but they had a super competitive group Ghana is prob the best side from Africa when you consider Sadio was injured for Senegal Portugal have one of the strongest sides on paper in the world Uruguay have been average but also have a very good team on paper. Japan obviously has a 'harder group' but Costa Rica was a 'throw away' side in which they should of easily got 3 points. Yeah Japan were pathetic. I'd feel insulted if I was one of their fans I think they just got 'ahead' of themselves they beat Germany in which they were 'largely' outplayed but still did a solid job and had 1 eye on the rd of 16 before 'actually' getting the points on the board. I hope we do not do the same however i feel with us no one expects us to draw/beat Denmark I'm not meaning to have a go at you or anything, but I don't remember you ever doing this in the before days, and it makes reading your comments feel very strange. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DqoQq1zME8

+xS.korea out Qatar out looks like Iran is going out as they are currently 1-nil down to the USA i'd say Japan shit the bed against CR and are out Spain should put them to the sword if not best case they get a draw but Germany will have a better GD after playing CR only hope left is Australia and Saudi both not favoured to win but both could progress with a draw - Saudi probably need to win overall i think we have 'played' better then most people expected us and got more points but there is a real chance every side is out in the group stage..... i honestly hope to God we get something out of the Denmark match but lets be 'frank' it is unlikely and it is unlikely Saudi will beat Mexico Bump

30 percent win rate is about par for afc. Need one more win from the remaining games for a good world cup

Japan really blew a massive chance to go through by losing to Costa Rica. If they beat Spain they are through but surely that is not going to happen Iran had it all to play for against USA but could not do it. Qatar were shit, clearly nowhere near the standard of other teams. Only Afif looked half decent and their goalkeepers were woeful. Hopefully they no where near qualifying again. South Korea could still get through if they beat Portugal and Ghana do not win against Uruguay. Seems unlikely but Portugal might do what France did and rest most of the first XI Saudi Arabia need to beat Mexico and they are through. The way they have been playing I think this is far from impossible. AND WE AUSTRALIA HAVE MADE IT THROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if Saudi Arabie or South Korea get through it surely is quite a good tournament for Asia

3 out of 6 would be a mathematical pass (50%)
2 out of 6 would always be a great result given the strength of Europe and South America.

well we are into the next rd and that is probably all i 'really' care about but i hope Saudies can make it esp if they top the group then AFC is assured one side in the final 8 which imo is a good showing i think the task is 'too great' for Japan or S.Korea so i have written them off happy to be proven wrong

I think if we are talking about AFC and not just Australia im pretty 'disappointing' with the overall showing assuming S.Korea and Japan go out - i would say we were looking good early - Iran won there 2nd game, KSA beat ARG, S.Korea got a solid draw and Japan beat Germany....(Qatar was shit the whole way but they would never qualify natrually so they dont really count) I feel like 4-5 teams had it in there hands for the next round it is disappointing so many 'cracked' under the pressure - Japan in particular bottled it against Costa Rica

Australia has kept flying the flag from the Asian Confederation by beating world number 10 ranked team, Denmark, 1-0. Socceroos play Argentina in the next round.
I don't count Qatar as a qualifying Asian nation, because as hosts they qualified automatically. However, they won a recent Asian Cup.
Are we the only Asian team to qualify for the last 16?
if we are, we were the worst performed in the Asian Confed WCQing campaign.

Are we the only Asian team to qualify for the last 16? if we are, we were the worst performed in the Asian Confed WCQing campaign. So far, yes. Only teams left are Japan, and Korea. How can they qualify? Via ESPN Japan: Guaranteed to qualify with a win vs. Spain, and will do so as group winners if Costa Rica draw/lose.If Japan and Costa Rica win: -- Top spot will be decided on group goal difference and goals scored; Japan currently have the goal-difference advantage by six goals. -- If the scoring record is identical, Costa Rica win the group on head-to-head.If Japan draw and Costa Rica-Germany is a draw, Japan are through in second. If Japan draw and Germany win: - Spain win the group with five points, Spain and Germany both have four points; and -- If Germany win by one goal, it will be decided by group goals scored; if records are identical, e.g. with 1-1 and 1-0 scorelines, Japan finish second on head-to-head. -- If Germany win by more than one goal, Germany are second on goal difference and Japan third. If Japan draw and Costa Rica win, Japan are out.Japan cannot qualify with a defeat. South Korea: Need a victory to have a chance. - If both South Korea and Uruguay win, the scenarios in the Uruguay section apply. -- If both games are won by the same margin, South Korea finish second on goal difference -- If Uruguay win by a greater margin of one goal (so 2-0 and 1-0), second place is decided on goals scored -- If goals scored are level (so 1-0 and 3-1), second place is decided on fair play (yellow and red cards.); If that's level, it's a random draw. -- If Uruguay win by a greater margin of two or more goals (so 3-0 and 1-0), Uruguay finish second on goal difference -- If Ghana draw and South Korea win: - Portugal win the group with six points, Ghana and South Korea both have four points; and -- If South Korea win by one goal, second place will be decided on goals scored. --- If group goals scored are identical (e.g. if 0-0 and 3-2), Ghana finish second on head-to-head. -- If South Korea win by two or more goals, South Korea finish second on goal difference and Ghana are third. - If South Korea and Ghana win, South Korea finish third.

I think South K can perform under pressure. Was impressed when SK fought back against us in the Asian Cup Final 2015 under extreme pressure. They scored a goal in the last few minutes to force extra time. They were away from home too, whilst we were playing in Aus. Uruguay are also a historical big game performer under pressure, with a never say die attitude, like us, but unlike us, a dirty side, who will bend any rule to win. Mind you, I'm a big admirer of Uruguay's passion for the national team shirt. Spain seems an insurmountable challenge for Japan. Unless there is a scenario where Spain rest heaps of first eleven players, with the replacements lacking unity of purpose motivation, only individual motivation. Just can't believe Japan did all the hard work beating powerhouse, Germany. Then they lost to Costa Rice in the next round - one of the weakest rated teams in the 32 team field, along with us, before the tournament started. Japan usually have a strong fighting spirit too.

I think LUCK finally played a big part for us after all this time and outcomes that you just can't explain against the odds. Putting aside Arnie's never say die give it your all man management style for thats was his own game persona as well, not surprised these guys will walk over hot coals for him, well maybe not all but most. IMO Japan are the typical perfect everything is covered/addressed from top to bottom. Maybe their handicap is they lack that "mental freedom" inside of just having a go, its all got to go by the book. SK likely the same. Saudi has just thrown copious's amount of $$$$ last 10yrs or more and learnt to play but lack that "it" factor to win that next game through. Reading alot of our Roo press as most have the common theme is the sqaud/group bond. Even those not played, mates working for each other, anotehr fellow football mate said we're Anzac's - I thought that ticked a box in my head about this group, they'll die in the trenchs together, its not always about stats its the ticker and forget the rule book. edit, Nicarbel, agreed your above post.

They got incredibly lucky against Japan and were embarrassed by Spain. I have no idea why you think NZ could not have done at least as well.
