I wouldn't know. If there are any League fans on here they might be able to help you.

It's because all the modern games descend from common ancestry which were simply called football, some ancestors such as calcio fiorentino, mob football, etc, and the various modern forms descended from them or from offshoots, such as Union after Web Ellies said screw the rules and ran with the ball, League came from that. Soccer (which is a slang version of Association Football) removed all ball handling, and Gridiron/American Football and Aussie Rules were created from other bases.

They all descended from the same basic "football" and retained those names.

A brief lesson in football:
Originally, there was only one football, what we today call football or 'soccer', and it was a much more physical game than what we see now. The 'other' football came to be known as "rugby" football, named after the Rugby School in England, where it is said that a certain young student, William Webb Ellis, picked up the ball in his hands during an association football match and ran with it over the goal line. Master Ellis asked his teacher, who was refereeing, if that was a goal. The reply was, "No, but it was a jolly good 'try'" Hence where the term 'try' comes from. This is where the sport was born.
Now since they both stem from football, they are both called 'football' by some people. The term Rugby was given to one because of where it was founded.
Why 'Soccer' I hear you ask?? Well, Near the end of 1863, Charles Wreford-Brown, who later became a notable official of the Football Association, was asked by some friends at Oxford whether he cared to join them for a game of "rugger" (rugby). Since the customary colloquialism was to ad 'er' to the end of things. He is said to have refused, preferring instead to go for a game of "soccer" - a play on the word "association". The name caught on.
So the two games come from the same place, and hence are both called 'football' whether you use your feet or not. Most of the people who call Rugby 'football' are philistines unaware of the game's history before 1938 though.

avy seriously mate most (not all) people that follow a game where your aim is to run straight at the biggest guy on the field, is such a stop start game and players are involved in a lot of off field incidents lack a certain amount of brain cells in my opinion.

No. You cant say that. Just like we think its unfair when people say it is 'how can you follow a game where sometimes there are no points on the board', its unfair for you to say that about League. You're allowed to not like it, but you cant force other people to not like it. And by god, dont link it with intelligence. Random_hero has shown us that football fans dont alwyas come from the upper echelons of the IQ department.

You are. I will grant you that. All the League fans are allowed theirs too, and you shouldnt be trying to change theirs by telling them that their sport is mentally retarded.

Anyhow, you dont like it obviously. I dont watch much league and dont really like it but I dont feel the need to go out and abuse it. Make of that what you will.

it also goes back to the 80s as well. Nine started calling their TV coverage 'Monday night football' and 'Friday night football', copying the American tv coverage. Thats how it seemed to come into popular use.
But most league fans seem to stick with 'Footy'
I'm still waiting for that injunction from NRL hq to stop FIFA using their name :D

Wait all you want, because the word 'football' doesn't feature in 'National Rugby League'.

really man, obviously you have that stereotype of league, and you don't watch it so you wouldn't know that its pointless running at a big person (basically the 4 big people on the team), what idiot really wants to do that? Its all about ball skills via hands and feet and a plethra of other skills.

plus you cant exactly say football has a squeaky clean off field record either, every sport is bound to have the guys that celebrate a little too much after a game etc.

 yeah, you'd think it did talking to the average rugby league fan. Manage to retrain a few though ;) I'm finally starting to get away with calling football "football" without being corrected.
