Is there a cap on the number of teams they’ll take? 16 teams would likely be ideal - some will say more; others less. Would they cap it? And if so, would they still offer licences to teams who don’t make the final cut?

There may not be P&R with the A-League, at least for now, but the second division does provide a breeding ground for future A-League expansion. Seems logical that if an NSD team is granted an A-League licence, the door would then be open to bringing in a team to the NSD that was awarded a licence but there was simply no room for them initially.

Another option is a third division. Realistically, we could have promotion and relegation between the second and third divisions. All options should be on the table! Assuming all parties are awarded “NSD” licences, the final product could consist of two divisions.

FA has said 10-16 clubs. However, if they cannot get 10, then they will try for a champions league style format. Based on that list, i'd be extremely surprised if there are 18 clubs that meet the requirements at this point in time. To be honest, I'd be surprised if they select any more than 12 teams.

I agree on 12 clubs.... at least initially.... Reading between the lines (and I guess mostly wishful thinking on my behalf) I hope that they advise the next best 2-4 clubs on what EXACTLY they need to do better/improve their bid for consideration and give them a 12 month grace period to then be the first clubs "promoted" this could be the "focus on expansion of NST" refered to maybe?

Also wishful thinking on my behlaf but maybe the "Champions league" format scaled down (like previous NPL chamionship) would be a btter fit as a mechanism to promote clubs INTO the NST?

David Hill, once the most hated man in Australian Football.

I remember around many football grounds in the NSL the chant, "kill kill David Hill".

Interesting that the last paragraph of the article specifies that it will be a 12 team competition next year. Does the writer of the article have any credentials to know that this will be the case?

The only thing that made me feel better during the Gallop/Lowy era was that at their worst, they somehow were still better than the Hill/Soccer Australia days. Those were dark days. My memory doesn't really extend further than that in the game from an admin view, but to me he's the first of a long line ofnational administrators which started the love affair with constantly going directly to war with the games own supporters. Nearly every admin after that, one after the other, not just incompetent. All out at war with the supporters.

The best I can say of Hill is that he at least didn't go to the next step to codify racism into the game, that came later with the folks who thought nothing of banning any heritage from logos so everyone could get a better look at the star of David in the chosen club's badge...

Heheheeh Its been a LOOOOONNNNGGGG bumpy ride thats for sure. Some people forget all the bullshit hoops the old "effnik" clubs had to jump through and the utmost hostility from our own governing body even before the A league was even a twinkle in Frankie's vindictive eyes......  If any OTHER group (Women, LGBTQ+, Indigenous, substance abusers, Fat people etc etc) was treated this way their would be a national outcry..... but young migrant kids enjoying soccer..... OOOOHHHHH cant have that in Aussieland....

connecting the national second division with the NPLs below it; possibly as part of a road map that initially governs expansion and then, once the groundwork is laid, implementing movement etc

"We want to have confidence that this competition means something to the community," said Johnson. "If a club has history, it will be connected to the community, it means that the community care about the club.

"That's what we think will be the DNA of this competition. It has to be community centred and rooted in community."

Hmmm, so the opposite of the A-League then?

It has been reported in Neos KosmosNeos Kosmos that five Greek football clubs have submitted their Expressions of Interest (EoI) for Australia’s National Second Division, the Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC).The Hellenic clubs are Sydney Olympic FC, South Melbourne FC, Heidelberg United FC, Bentleigh Greens FC, and Olympic FC

It would be difficult to have more than 1 Greek club in a city if one wanted to advantage of the broad demographics on offer........"for the good of the game". Depends on the size of the league and the quality of other applicants. Interesting they don't mention another Hellenic Cub Preston Macedonia, once rulers of Greece. I guess they don't want the ethnic battles.

Sydney Olympic and SM Hellas are the 2 strongest contenders with a faint possibility of Heidelberg given the size of the Greek population in Melbourne. Olympic FC no chance given the much better candidates in Brisbane.

The naming dispute is over so at leat they'll only be fighting over the footy these days. BTW I know a coupe of Macedonians in my neck of the woods and they gave about 1% of a shit about the whole thing compared to all the street marches going on in Melbourne

A third of Greece is still called Macedonia. The Macedonians were thrusted up North and given a chunk of what was previously Yugoslavia, handed to them by Tito. Being a Croatian, Tito did not want to advantage the Serbs and hence annexed that portion for the Macedonians.

Whilst the naming part was the last legal hurdle (resolved 2018) between the two, it was Greece who had the issue with it and wanted it changed. Some Macedonians still want their homeland back and it's still a sore point as Greece controls historical Macedonia, including where Alexander the Great came from. Plenty of areas, roads etc in the Halkidiki region still reference Macedonia, including the airport at Thessaloniki.

Fascinating history and in Europe generally.

From what I understand, he was simply biased against the Serbs and didn't want them to have any more land than that was necessary that he could get away with. No riches there, well at least I don't think so, just land.

There was claims from Bulgaria for the land and Tito didn't want them to have it. Also the Serbs wanting it and wanted it to be called Southern Serbia. Tito fixed that up (for reasons mentioned earlier) by calling it something or rather Macedonia. That part of land consisted mainly of Slavs, about a quarter Albanians and some Bulgarians. Not sure how many Greek Macedonians but not a majority. The true Macedonia is actually the northern part of Greece.
At least that's how I read the history but there may well be some variances to my understanding. Fascinating nevertheless.
