Or a Norwegian even?  But thats just the marketing power of the EPL mate....

Did you see the chaos in Hong Kong the other day? Inter Miami were booked to play a local team, tickets were in their thousands of dollars and Messi and Suarez didnt play and the locals almost rioted.....  People dont watch football anymore they follow Insta- profiles. Its so sad.

Its how the Matildas are so successful and there is little to no interest in the Socceroos.

I dare say as to be repeating myself, the big clubs including the PL it's all about the company buying the trophies & buying the best players.
I've been to England many times over the years & all you see in shops are Man U, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs & Arsenal gear & all the kids are wearing this gear, very few of them follow their local sides.

Haha, I remember watching the 2003 Ashes Test in Brisbane and saw a Colchester United shirt among the Barmy Army and had a chat with the bloke. Took me back to their giantkilling days of the early 70's. Those were fun times and there were a few small teams made a big impact then.

Funny you should bring up Colchester, this is where my wife's family is from Essex, in & around Colchester, the biggest team in the area, closest PL team is West Ham.
Not a Colchester fan among them, though did go & see Colchester play a couple of times with Richard Garcia playing for them.

Forgot to mention, my wife and I did some house sitting in Terling, not that far away :). As it happens, the woman who we sat for was an ex-pat Aussie.

This is why middle eastern teams will never do anything on the world stage - horrid mentality.

Go up and they spend the rest of the game flopping around, pretending they're dead.
Go behind and they lose their sh1t  against good sides and cave

Absolute pea hearts

Well, Saudi Arabia did make the round of 16 in 94.

They didn't cave against the Argies either when trailing, instead coming back to win.

I know some Aussie girls that follows the Matildas & watch the Matildas games but never watch men football. Never seen CR7 or Messi play b4 in their lives.

Anything with men they are not interested.  Sam Kerr is their hero.  Other than Tim Cahill they don't know any of the Socceroos players

I'd be willing to bet if Australia hosted a men's WC and the Socceroos made the semis, their popularity would be >= that of the Matildas.

Biggest game in Jordan's history and I can't imagine how many more fans have rushed over for this given the capacity of the stadium. It could be an epic or one of the most dull 1:0 games ever.

First one maybe a bit open but the other two were certainly right. Jordan tried hard. Qatar a bit smarter where it mattered.

Yep. And all the posts about Japan being the superior team because most of their players play in top 5 leagues etc. Sth. Korea to an extent too.

Qatar playing tournament in home country helps a bit but that’s 2 Acup trophies in a row now 👏

why some national teams- even with top players- win tournaments and why some don’t (looking at you England) is very complex

Of course virtually everyone would rather watch the premier league than Qatar - Jordan. It’s not a very appealing final outside their region. Tbh it’s a little bit Mickey Mouse.

I personally just don’t care about the Arab teams at all. I don’t really care about the Asian Cup in general if Australia’s not involved, though if the final was Japan - South Korea/Iran, I would have certainly switched to Paramount occasionally. As it was, I didn’t even consider it.

Qatar go back to back titles so well done to them, especially after the World Cup showing in-between Asian Cups but this time with a different coach its very interesting.
Apparently their poor World Cup showing was due to their poor preparation with no competitive football for almost 7 months so maybe their World Cup results were an outlier given their quality they have in Asia.
I would not underestimate them at all.

Im glad the World Cup has expanded it would have been a real struggle to qualify with the existing 4 and a half spots, the depth in Asia is certainly rising year on year.

Hopefully the Olyroos put an a decent showing in the u23 Asian Cup in the next few months and give us hope that we are on the right direction again.

Japan have got world class players but they certainly dont have a world class coach, have a coach thats coached in the top leagues like the Japan players have experienced and they would be performing alot better.
They performed very poorly as a team given the talent they got.

Exactly. Or at least I hope so.

I must admit I found the euphoria about the women a bit cringe. It was only possible in Australia. I got swept up myself and even went to a couple of games, but I dunno, it always felt a bit hollow. Like, it was easy for me to just shrug my shoulders and get on with my day when the Matildas lost, while I’d get really upset for a couple of days if it was the Socceroos. I am glad the girls got their moment in the sun, but I still really struggle to watch or care about women’s football.

Yep. Said exactly that in the car on the way back from Brisbane.

Academies, talent identification, SAP programs, National Curriculum, Coaching badges, seminars, NPL, A league, blah blah that we have and there are 10 teams in that tournament where most of the players have a better touch and more composure on the ball than us.

It can't be because we don't have players in the big 5 leagues because they don't have that either.

What is going on?
