+x+x+x+x+xPSG have accepted a bid for Kylian Mbappe but the armchair experts in Australia arent taking them seriously and trying to compare them to the MLS/CSL.... even if this deal doesnt happen it shows the S.Arabians are clearly showing intent that we have never seen before....how many places can pay a player close to a billion dollars a season  [honestly anyone doubting this could be world football changing is an idiot and kind of shows the ball knowledge on this site is on the floor]   Im sure your ball knowledge is supreme, absolutely world changing.... for this young eshay thats for sure... Just saying the Arabians need to be 'taken seriously' there is a blantent ignorance to the fact that 'money talks'  the only reason the PL has been so successful is it lured much of South Americas and Afraicas best talent with $ if the tide turns, [and im not saying it will]  it does feel like power is shifting then it needs to be respected - for too long we have kept our head in the sand  I post this comment whilst watching PSG vs Al Nassr - prior to CR7 going to the Saudie League i would not have bothered to watch this match but Brozvaic and CR7 starting against a Big side like PSG has been turned in....i wouldnt be the only one Of course ill always be a Manchester United Fan (im a club loyalist) like someone else said many younger fans are more 'fans of players' - it seems the players themselves have become 'brands' - Neymar, CR, Messi, Mbappe etc are all (arguably) bigger then they clubs they play for.... Of course money talks mate, and yes absolutely the Saudis are spending up big but PSG is a good example why I think the opposite to what you predict... They have spent huge amounts over the past 4-5 years trying to create a French "Galacticos" but nobody, outside of France, is really invested in watching French football.... OK PSG may be a fashionable t -shirt to Hollywood strumpets but its not really raised the profile of French football has it? Like LFC says above, EPL is the top of the heap not only because of the players and the salaries on offer, it was the prestige league in the world well before the big bucks came along.....  This Saudi experiment (in my opinion) wont be something that lives for very long, How long do you think these players "Brand awareness" will last playing in the desert with the odd exhibition match every year? If a world club tournament gains a foothold soon then sure, maybe, but the ACL will never have any interest outside of Asia and Middle east ... at least in our lifetimes.   I do not 'disagree' but it is so short sighted - Asia has 5x the population of Europe and is around half the population of the entire planet....If the ACL was 'succerssful' then the tide would turn - the issue the ACL has is no one cares about it but if an AL side played Al Nassr i reckon you would get a sell out due to the CR7 effect.... i think the 'issue' PSG has is they are 'they only team' trying to pump money into the league  It is similar to the bundesliga no one wants to watch a 1 horse race  But lets be 'frank' PSG and Bayren M in the UCL people are interested in they do have appeal as a 'brand' compare it to La liga which isn't very competitive isnt super popular and it argubly only has 2-3 sides that can compete but when El Classico is and those two sides play they get >650 million of viewers.... im old enough to remember sides like Galatasaray, Panathinaikos, Schalke, Lyon and Marseille all being considering decent-good sides in Europe.  Not old enough to ever remember Celtic being a decent side in Europe but they are 'still a house hold name'  it takes time and effort to build a brand which is 'essentially' what big clubs are these day - the fact i know that Al Nassr and AL Hilal are the two big Saudi clubs - shows they are creating a brand. The other MASSIVE factor you are ignoring is the investment/ownership these clubs have in Europes big leagues. CFC, Newcastle United, PSG all in somewhat are Saudi money Any if we are generalising it to the middle east ALMOST EVERY big club is getting money from these nations -this influnce means this isnt a 1 trick pony but you might be right but there is more too it then i think people realise.  Ill give you a example of a club that started to 'build a brand' - LA Galaxy when they had Becks they were selling out friendlies (even here in Australia against the Jets) - the issue was once becks left they lost their star power and the salary cap strcuture of the MLS made it hard to maintain that brand appeal (however the US alone has enough people to support the league out side of the US not many ppl care about the MLS)  I dare say if LA Galaxy came now no one would care....the Saudies have the ability to sustain that 'hype' and build something special and there financial influence is beyond any sport has seen. The fact i had a conversation with a die hard AFL fan who (himself admits he doesnt like Soccer) asked me about the Crazy money that 'French guy' got offered to go to the middle east is a prime example of that....  Money talks and there is no ifs buts or maybes the only question is how much money you need to make something happen  As for the fukwits thinking the 'super league' wont happen it is a matter of when not if....there is simply too much money on offer for UEFA to maintain the current structure and as i said 'clubs are brands' not the leagues themselves " Money talks and there is no ifs buts or maybes the only question is how much money you need to make something happen " quote Absolutely I see the point you are trying to argue, I just think, like previous attempts in China, US, The Super league etc etc it is doomed to failure.  You mention Bayern and saying that as a 1 horse league the Bundi doesn't get respect,... I dont agree there are thousands of Shalke, Borussia, even Hertha Berlin fan clubs scattered all over the world especially in Asia.  This is ALL ABOUT Arab prestige nothing else..... The clubs you mentioned Al "something or other" will never become prestige clubs outside of the Arab/Muslim world  and thats what they are targeting more than anything.... THIS is why they are also buying prestigious Euro clubs.... not for the titles or the results, not for the money just .... to add to the collection of expensive prestigious things they own.... Like some fat kid in the school grounds buying all the Pokemon cards to complete the set.  Do you understand why someone like Mbappe would resist going to Saudi Arabia at the height of his career? Because winning a 3rd tier comp in the desert means NOTHING... Why do you think these Arab sheikhs, and Indian and Pakistani Billionaires, and North Korean Dictators and African Autocrats and Russian Oligarchs buy townhouses in Picadilly and Soho and send their kids to Oxford and Eton or the Sorbonne?  Why do you think their is a second Louvre (and I hear a Guggenheim soon to be announced too) in the desert and they buy up all the extremely limited edition Lambos, Bugattis and Ferraris, gold plate them and put them in their 1000 car garages and never drive them?

+x+x+x+x+x+x+xPSG have accepted a bid for Kylian Mbappe but the armchair experts in Australia arent taking them seriously and trying to compare them to the MLS/CSL.... even if this deal doesnt happen it shows the S.Arabians are clearly showing intent that we have never seen before....how many places can pay a player close to a billion dollars a season  [honestly anyone doubting this could be world football changing is an idiot and kind of shows the ball knowledge on this site is on the floor]   Im sure your ball knowledge is supreme, absolutely world changing.... for this young eshay thats for sure... Why do you think their is a second Louvre (and I hear a Guggenheim soon to be announced too) in the desert and they buy up all the extremely limited edition Lambos, Bugattis and Ferraris, gold plate them and put them in their 1000 car garages and never drive them?   it is also good for Asia if they become a top 5-8 league on the planet   True.

Yes the Saudis are mad for football but their rulers are just using it for prestige..... ..... Great if all this excessive spending develops their football and makes the Asian confederation stronger for it but ...... and this is a big but, most Asian fans are bigger eurosnobs than we are... sure maybe some of them might buy into Ronaldo or Neymar playing in SA but they will still froth over UCL and EPL and Real vs Barca even without any superstars playing.....  Lets just wait and see how patient the Saudis are with this, I guess time will tell....

I get the 30+ yrs going for a last good meal ticket (Bobby I forgive you but but you still could have delivered elsewhere in EU) and the sound mid level kind of player but upper level players plain ridiculous.

Well he knew he was gonnabe a benchie - why didn't he work harder the previous season but he got too complacent as you do I'll forgive him for that but @ 33 and the much needed clense he knew the writing was on the wall and I get not wanting to be on the pines. I wish him luck been a very admirable Captain having followed mighty SG.

+xHonestly we were living in the golden days in the 2000s and we didn't even know it. A league and EPL were on Fox sports and both were thriving it's just gone downhill from there   Although i think Foxsports did a better job the optus sports with football....the sheer cost of watching the AL and EPL was a joke you needed the base Foxtel package + Sports Package + HD ($90 per month over $1000 per year) and if you wanted to watch UCL you needed to add UCL via BEIN sports (addition $25p/m)  I agree the slow death of both foxsports and the AL was when they lost the EPL rights. I said this when it happened and subscribers for foxsports have abbandon them in droves and the AL has only struggled for viewers since due to the lack of cross promotion between the English Premier league and the A-League  However you got to admit it is WAY more accessible for fans now Optus sports is 199 for a year or 7 bucks a week if you're an optus customer, Paramount+ is ~89 pa but i have managed to get a promo evey year never paid more then 50 bucks for the entire year - they both are in HD  The only shit thing which happened last season is Stan and Stan Sports holding the UCL to ransom - the other big negative is back in the day SBS use to show a few UCL ties on FTA.. I agree football for Australian fans was better in the 2000s becuz we had so many 'good' players in top leagues it made the world of football more interesting to know that we had local talent on show - But in the current day European football in general is cheaper and easier to access, social media, youtube etc make keeping upto date much easier as well. The issue is the domestic game is on a completely different platform to the EPL.  The small band on AL die hards on here are FAR outweighted by the European League fans (most EPL) - thus without the EPL on the same platform as the AL you loose 60-70% of football fans in this country - prior they might of turned into the AL when they has access to you on foxsports.  I posted a very similar post years ago saying the AL needs the EPL but the EPL doesnt need the AL - many of the HAL tradgics at the time disgareed but it is clearly and issue as imho the domestic game has only gone backwards since and honestly speaking since Kayo/Foxsports dumped the AL it has only worse... In the 2000s anyone from a lower SES was essentially priced out of football - IMHO it is the single master stroke of stupidity the FFA did was give 'exclusive' rights to foxsports as it killed the growth tradjectory football was on during the 06 socceroos era

christ I had to copy/paste who McLaughloling is haha..... Yer whatever relates to egghandball. charlied as much as I don't warm up to the AL one thing I agree - the large stads are/were not suited lookign ahead to growing the game they way they wished for. Sure I expect FOX had their directive as well BUT football here and now only needs small stads full stop. Gosford the perfect example let alone Hindmarsh. Thankfully the exiled soon to be NSD Clubs, some have very suitable sized grounds that tick the box's. Long may this be start of better things to come for the game as a whole. Anyway back to the saudi, yer agreed Saint Maximin is nice prize for them. He's on the cusp for a NT call IF he didn't hang onto the ball too long as he does but he sure has the skill set. Under another good coach he could evolve into a serious next level player - not sure that will occur there mind you.

Achieving cred for their league is quite another.

The A League has had two major issues from the outset: undercapitalisation and unfit for purpose share code stadiums.  The MLS, tellingly, resolved them stadium issue ane has gone from strength to strength - because, of course, they had fully capitalised clubs. Now if every A League club had a Hindmarsh Stadium from the outset, we would be having a very different conversation now.   Undercapitalisation and an inability for clubs to generate their own revenue streams outside the copy/paste HAL template.  The league is now the living embodiment of the Ouroboros symbol, soon to be swallowed whole by its own administration.

Achieving cred for their league is quite another.   Just like buying Ferraris and Lambos in the desert mate, once they realise they havent got anyone to race them against they will, hopefully, lose interest again.

Sadio Mane to Al Nassr pretty much done.
Man the Chinese and Americans must be watching this thinking this is how we need to do it.
Some of those Saudi teams would give some top euro teams a run for their money.

Franck Kessie from Barca has just agreed a 15mil EU deal to go to Al Ahli.
He was a Spurs target for the No.6 and would have slotted in beautifully alongside Bissouma.
Clearly, Saudi clubs are willing to offer wages well beyond the means of traditional EPL clubs.

for a league that' supposedly going to take over, no major football site even covers it, the matches not involving ronaldo have two dogs a a confused sheik in attendance and watching any highlights you'd think Allah scored the goal the amount of times they shout his name
contrast that with the coverage and interest the MLS is getting from Messi - not even in the same stratosphere

and this I saw earlier this morn......34 yer I get it. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/aug/03/willian-agrees-terms-with-al-shabab-two-weeks-after-signing-fulham-extensionKessie is 26, sure may have been a good target but there's plenty more out there that maybe better options for his rebuild, a player of his statue now taking the $$ says he's opting out imo and its obvious he isn't suited to Xavi/Barca ways. 22/24yrs with experience and showing improvement are a better fit to play AP's way, plus they do have some good youth he can work with.
