Man if only the a league got 1/4 of the love the Matildas are getting.

Forget AFL and nrl we need to keep these fans that are showing up.

Right now we're like the nerdy kid with the new iPhone everyone wants to be our friend but we all know how that ends.

Hopefully apl can keep the momentum going this time

Matilda's have genuinely world class players in their team all plying their trade in Tier 1 of European football.

IF the A-league started to produce the same kind of player, relative to the level of the Matilda's, then the A-league would be HUGE.

Sam Kerr is not only a footballer, but judging by the screams from the stands when she came on last night, she's a bonafide celebrity/poster-girl of Aussie Women's Football.

But Kerr played in the A-league w for ages. It didn't bring huge crowds in, other players like Kyra was great to watch coming through not too long ago. The interest still wasn't there. People seem to only care once they go overseas to the big clubs or are playing for the Matildas.

70 odd thousand people last night dont know and dont care how good the players are or how they played mate.....

They were there to support their idols and their country... Ask most of the girls losing their minds when Kerr was brought on who the other 10 players on the pitch are and most will struggle to answer. Its not a criticism it just reality... The Wleague needs to take a leaf out of what the Asian and Euro womens comps are now doing and expand. Play a full h/a season. create a national cup competition ike the men's and follow up on creating a womens NSD as soon as possible... Give the thousands upon thousands of girls now playing the game a pathway to both play and support and they will thrive...

This Popularity is 'always' there it is called the Premier league, WC and UCL.

The WWC is the for the most part the very best of women's football - people want to see the top end of the spear.

thus, people love football in Australia but they want to watch the top levels of the game.

The AL gets more hype from players like Koal heading to Newcastle Utd then the AL finals series. Becuz people want us to be successful you want to see Australians playing in the PL, Series A, La Liga and UCL etc.

The easiest example I give is everyone wants to see/drive a Ferrari which is the top levels of football. The AL is like a Camry it is still a car but far less exicting, also the AL has shot itself in the head with being overly PC, anti active support, stale structure and way to sterile - it is for the most part 'boring' to follow. - It has done everything BUT focus on the game itself football WHICH is the pollar opposite of something like a world cup which is 100% about football - for all the moaning from PC wankers b4 Qatar soon as the tornament started NO wanted politics in the game they just cared about the matches being played. It is what the FA fail to understand football is the product not whatever bullshit agenda is in the media.

I do watch the AL becuz in general im a fan of the sport but i hate the strcuture of the AL and almost everything it has 'become' - i do not attend games anymore as i personally think the atmosphere is not what is used to be and the league itself is un-interesting. The league for too long has ignored the shit structure in favor of 'short term' money. Until it has P/R and removes most of the squad restrictions i cannot see the AL ever being 'very' popular.

The numbers do not lie, most people think the way i do or or a similar vien it is why you get 20k people to fed squad to watch a match on a screen but cant get 20k people to fill a stadium for clubs that have exsited almost 2 decades

Football is incredbly popular in Australia but domestic league isnt and we should NEVER mix those two things up - becuz the structure, on the pitch quality, money and focus of the domestic league is so far from what top professional football is, you simply cannot call the AL a 'professional' football league with a straight face

Given the players mostly started their journey back then in the w-league (now a-league women's) its a perfect marketing tool to explain that the league is where Matildas stars are made.

But I dont trust the APL especially how they handled the grand final decision straight after the Socceroos great run at the World Cup when they builded such large momentum.
Lets see if they learned their lessons from that.

The FA needs to go to the Federal/State governments NOW and demand 10x fund for 'grass' roots of the game - it should be almost Free for Boys and Girls to play the game and follow in the foot steps of their Nation Team Heroes.

The dream for Aussie kids should be to play in a world cup not become some Rugby/AFL Wife/GF beater and be player addicted to Ketamine/Coke

Fine example of the 'national sport'

There isn't......

We have 26m people

Add in Aus Open, Netball, Union, cricket and Formula 1....even add the rise in popularity of Basketball

There simply isnt enough money to go around.....

Football has 1 big advantage which we have not really used since the AL was created and it can 'sell players' for massive money but due to the Cap clubs are hamstrung into crap fees

The sooner people realise professional level sport is a business the better we will be....

Why do you think the AFL/NRL are constently lobbying for more funding at grass roots to get more and more kids into their sport

In order to be a developing nation that receives HUGE payouts for developing players, it needs to attract the best junior athletes in the first place. Fees are probably the #1 hurdle to overcome in that context, but I don't want to open this can of worms again.

I agree the fees to be lowed if not free is very important but the pathways are also important too especially that the demand for playing football from both female and even males will go up so they need to refined.

I also think its a great opportunity to educated the masses about the skills of the game especially at grassroots level, education is equalling as important as getting more kids playing football in my opinion especially to mums and dads who are might want their kids to get into the game for potentially the first time.
And get more futsal, 5v5 courts built around all over the country as future stars will be inspired to become the next Kerr, Foord etc but there is so many ways to build on this wonderful legacy these girls are doing for the country.

Its up the powers at be to bottle this up and make the most of it!

My hope is APL learns how to connect to the player base... the sadness I feel as no management team in over 70 years has connected to the player base.... I hope but doubt APL uses the WC in mid season to connect to the player base not try and leverage benefits off the player base which goes down poorly...

Mid, I hope APL do nothing to capitilise from the WWC momentum and in any case they will surely screw it up if so.
Its not all about the APLW but whats massive underneath.
As you posted in the MLS thread the USL see themselves being irrelevant in the future due to the system and we have it in a small scale compared to them but still totally a barrier for the leagues below.
This isn't good at all, hope someone, let alone JJ/FA WTFU cut the loss's put a knife through it all - we are on the wrong path.

I think the final figure will smash all records, if you add regional Australia plus streaming plus 7plus aps, plus Optus, plus youtube the final figure will be well over 5 million...

In the last game  capital city rating were 1.5 million and the final total was 4.7 million, if that follows it will approach 7 million...

It's hard to see it making a huge difference to A-League W even if we win the tournament. All the players the country falls in love with will head straight back to their overseas clubs and in the modern world with all the kids on social media and such they will follow the players through that. I mean if Kerr announced she was going back to Perth for the upcoming season, then it would get interesting to see the following it could get compared to when she used to play there, but obviously that's not happening.

The Matildas should be huge business going forward however, surely State Governments will be bidding big money for any games over the next decade or so and likewise TV money should be much better. Channel 7 have probably made a fortune off this World Cup with the ratings being a lot higher than anyone imagined. Hopefully 7 spend more money on womens football in the future and not use it all on AFLW.

Probably won't but that's OK think about how many little kids are now thinking football and what is possible for them.

The amount of little girls (and boys) I see at the matches has been great. Kids that are carrying carboard signs made with textas and glitter. When was the last time you saw that? Just fantastic.

The vibe at the matches is also great as already commented on. Barely any swearing, lots of good humour and genuine joy just to be there. Definitely no aggro which I imagine puts a lot of hand wringers off going to the A League.

As also mentioned affordable tickets. When I was in Brisbane a family of 5 was $90 to see the Roar play. Just ridiculous. $50 would have been fair.

As also mentioned affordable tickets. When I was in Brisbane a family of 5 was $90 to see the Roar play. Just ridiculous. $50 would have been fair.

IN bold, the future what isn't seen and un noticed but starts at grass roots !
They dgaf about APL its about to play football having watched a WC here and our own running on the grass and dreaming.
You don't see knock off effects for years but its the DNA thats created.

Our games leaders are the ones who need to act and help support from the ground as we all know.
Costs, support the countless volanters more, improve coaching kits - give acknowledgement.
Improve the eco system.
Be more transparent.

It will be interesting if this all translates in greater W League attendances.

Considering the bulk of the Matildas Squad doesnt play in the W-League why would it?

national team success is good for particpation - as more and more young girls say 'i want to be the next Sam Kerr'

It does nessarily mean more girls/boys are watching a completely different league/competition

I obviously hope it does result in more people watching and attending games but it is a long 'bow' to draw saying Matildas doing well will improve domestic support.....same thing with the Socceroos the boys did well in the world cup but the AL still had 'very' low attendance and viewership

Friends in England are saying the exact opposite... After their Euro triumph, the following season saw a huge increase in spectators for womens football....  Your right about the players though..... would help if the Wleague kept their stars in Australia....

As for the Socceroos, .... the APL killed any chance of anything happening....

As for the Socceroos, .... the APL killed any chance of anything happening....

95% of Englands Squad plays in the Englands womens Super league which pay 10-20x times what the Womens AL could pay......

You're also forgetting the 'carry on' effect of these women repersenting clubs that have established fans bases from the mens game.

The AFLW has done this with established AFL sides 'merging and blurring' the lines for people who are 'already' members for the mens sides. Thus if you're an Arsenal fan in the EPL your probably going to support the Arsenal Womens team you only need to capture a small % of the mens support base to get good numbers to the stadiums base on the sheer number of fans the bigger clubs have.....

I honestly hope more people attend and watch the AL womens and mens division but personally i dont think this will have any carry over effect on the top domestic division - but it will boost the clubs at the grass roots which i personally care a lot more about then the AL

it is Grass roots that make these stars so for me im happy the clubs that our useless FA have neglected deserve the credit

We can't maintain this popularity for the womens game. It's a world cup. It's at home. It's an event being an event.

To capitalise on this, I think we need to be lobbying hard for fair grass roots funding and make a concerted push to turn the ALW fully professional. A big part of that should be pushing the media partners that made a fucking feast on us for ratings on this cup to put some decent money toward a ALW specific media deal.

Seven are cnts that we should never hitch our wagon to. But I think it's really up to Optus to put its money where its mouth is. They send all the money O/S and placate us with feel good documentaries about the grassroots but the thing they've never done is pay for pro Australian footballers to play pro football in Australia.

I think the generally fair ticket prices but also pricier categories for these massive games are the treat in many household budgets. The ALW will have to really go hard on good pricing which is unlikely sustainable. It's a fest, a one-off, with great hype and that's great. Invariably a lot will dissipate. I don't think we'll see anything remotely close to how it's kicked on in England.

Post tournament most will seek out other past times and it'll be incredibly hard to reel them in. I hope I'm wrong but the customer and fan is hard to crack.

Its a question/premise I/we have been questioning since 1974, when the Socceroos made the World Cup for the first time.

Even the notion that making and being in World Cups Men's and Women's and having some flow on success would transfer to Club Level football.

The historic evidence suggests it doesn't make a difference at Club Level never has.

The Club dynamics can be answered by these links:

Your answers to what the APL should do are all in these links, and have always been there.

APL has a different view with an MLS centric policy as apposed to a Global Standard and has ignored or discarded the advice provided.

And let's be clear that the early success of the AL centred around a belief from football people that we could make the game a success in terms of reach in the form of attendances and media, even though the standard of play wasn't great, its now better but the metrics are down. We lost the "buy-in" of a higher purpose, in making the game relevant here.

The A-League is also modelled on the ....AFL.  Works for them because the best players don't leave to play overseas.

The problem with football in this country was always how to go fully professional and still connect with the fans. This problem was solved by the A-League franchise model, and the deal with Foxtel.

The model undeniably was fully professional, and connected with more fans than ever before, its not even close.

  The game was relevant

Then the connection with fans was lost.

The new problem is how to regain the connection with fans, and still remain fully professional.

Ppl keep bringing this up as some sort of gotcha for why pro/rel can’t work here..but conveniently leave out the fact the NSL had direct pro/rel for only 2-3? seasons of its entire 27yr existence..w/o a national 2nd tier below it.

Sure, some sides successfully made the quantum-leap but most were never going to.

Ok so you tell me what it is that P and R of the current lower division clubs and relegation of current A-League clubs is going to bring to the table in terms of increased attendances, viewerships, sponsorships and media interest.

These are the measurements of "popularity" that matter.

Romanticism and nostalgia won't bring in over a billion dollars that the A-league did and you need money for a fully professional code.  Why fully pro?  Because full professionalism was the key plank that old timer stakeholder in the NSLback in the day identified as being the *number one* priority for football in this country... and some of them actually knew what they were talking about.

The definition of growth you’ve put forward can never be achieved by domestic ⚽️ in this country, regardless of model. Literally every single sokkah-hater would have to convert to the game overnight(& not be strictly a Eurosnob, at that) for there to be any semblance of a chance.

In saying that, I’m simply not keen on the idea of creating any more MLS-style franchises willynilly and dropping them upon Fremantle/Hobart/Sunshine Coast etc. for the locals to do w/them as they will - not least bc it helps perpetuate the myth our enemies use that ⚽️ is a young sport in this country w/no history. Maybe someone ought to pump millions into Balgownie Rangers/Adamstown Rosebud etc. and market the hell out of them as being the country’s oldest-surviving ⚽️ clubs, in the case of those two pre-dating  Collingwood in the AFL..

With P&R you need to not finish in the relegation zone
To not finish in the Relegation Zone, you need a team that's stronger than the worst of the rest
If you can do that in the top league year in year out, without being professional, good luck, that'll be a fascinating story in itself.

No need to put the cart before the horse.   P&R will force professionalism naturally

P&R will also get rid of the lemons that are giving the 'Pro game' a bad image.  (Yes, I'm looking at you Brisbane)

ALMOST!!!! hahahahahaha Nah just pointing out that, just like in NRL, AFL, NFL, NBA, MLS etc etc etc teams dont give a shit were they finish if they are outside the finals (playoffs) and it doesn't matter either..... in 99.999999 % of every other league if you are 3rd last with 3 rounds to go the players and staff start getting sweaty arse cheeks......

Yeah, one of the biggest downsides of the current model is that teams at the bottom basically give up halfway through the season. Sometimes they might have an outside chance of making the top 6, but even then that's pretty meaningless (only once has a team outside the top 3 won the grand final). The threat of relegation would at least give players a reason to play like their lives depended on it and fans a reason to show up. This problem will only get bigger as the A-League expands to 14 and then 16 teams.

Look at the AFL and NRL. Even with 8-team finals series, teams at the bottom now strive to finish last so that they get good draft picks for future seasons. It's a perverse incentive system.

Perverse is the right term for it...... really is bizarre how meaningful it seems to be to closed off leagues that the "myth" of every season anyone can win it is..... For a country like the US, particularly, that prides itself on its staunch support of capitalism, anti-socialism and the "great American dream", they certainly go out of their way to make sure that their sport is like a reality game show.....  blechhhhhh....

There is no draft that I know of to date for the NRL though it has been discussed due to their lob sided comp, added a new club this season and expecting another I think next but don't know where they are finding quality players to fill more teams for their lower levels you don't even hear about them.

The future due to the WWC here and current success will no doubt increase womens football at local Clubs and even boys to a degree.
I agree much with Flytox and others, trouble is our local Clubs are struggling not just for what has been mentioned re decent facilities needed for todays expectations unlike what most currently have they we frequent at trainings and weekends and X Clubs able to service growth.
The other major stickling point is "grounds" - the influx of womens football last 10/15+yrs being played Sundays has really added to ground availabilty for mens Sunday games (re its growth, O55's started in my comp for eg) AND the ongoing pre and post season fighting with cricket commencement and finish, arranging pre season games is a nightmare.
So its not just Clubs being able to cater for "growth" its grounds full stop as well.
Just going to some larger Clubs I know in my Association training nights are a melting pot, some grounds have 4 teams sharing a pitch and more.
At times its like your watching from above a mosh pit.
How do you train corners, shooting, have a half game match when your a squad of 27/30.
Sure small sided games are a go to but know what I mean.

$$$$'s need to go to grass roots, I don't know how much support comes from the FA/Feds to Association football but I'm sure its not adequate enough - one local strong PL1 Club I've known all my life has only now finally got the approval to have their ground synthetic for next season for its always a slush pit for one and not fit to play on due to the amount of traffic on it.
Its taken 10yrs and more of lobbying (evirnomentalists yaddayadda) and stumping up funds.
The ground is so woeful their PL1 team have to play home games elsewhere to date for years.
How many other Clubs are in the same scenario around the country.
NSW Gov agreed to contribute 500K - last I knew was a 1.4M upgrade but that quote mentioned was some 4yrs ago !
Here's a small snippet that I'm sure is similar everywhere :

“With our player numbers expected to grow to 20,000 by the year 2026, this upgrade is essential to allow our community the opportunity to continue playing their chosen sport.”

XXXXX FC are equally excited by the prospect of XXXXX Oval redevelopment as their female participation numbers soar, reaching 35% of total club numbers in 2022.  The Club’s new strategic plan puts into focus their community, football development and providing all players access to football year-round. XXXX have been active in their support of the local referees association by hosting their pre-season courses.

As a Club, XXXX FC will be contributing over $850,000 to the project through member funds and grants as part of the Asian Cup Legacy fund, alongside NSFA’s $125,000 contribution. This investment from the Club and Association demonstrates the commitment football is willing to make towards Council grounds to create better community facilities and assets for the future."

We did? when mate.?

Well the answer is 42.  Let me explain.

In the context of this thread, the question is why is football and specifically the A-league not "popular" right now?  Agreed?

The most common complaint is that the A-League is stale because its boring watching the same small number of closed shop teams every season.  The second most common complaint is that they're not "authentic" clubs.  The third complaint is that without relegation there is no excitement and incentive to do better at the bottom and without promotion there is no excitement and incentive to do better in the lower leagues

P and R is touted is the solution to both these problems, and therefore make the game more "popular".

Point 1.  Its fact that 42 unique clubs played in the NSL.  FORTY TWO. If FORTY TWO teams is not enough variety,  how many additional unique teams do you think P and R will need to introduce to the top tier to make it interesting to the football public, this time around?

Point 2.  Authenticity.  All those FORTY TWO Clubs were as authentic as they could be.

Pint 3.  Oh but those FORTY TWO teams didn't get promoted through a NSD"   Ok, explain how significant do you think that difference is going to be for the popularity of the game given that most of these clubs have tiny community followings?   Who- apart from those tiny communities, who and how many others are really going to care that they're in the league to improve its popularity?

History is clear.  Adding more unique teams from the lower leagues results in sweet FA to the games "popularity"  in the long run.

Getting back on topic, the thread is "how do we maintain the current popularity being achieved by the WWC.  Well you first need a measure of "popularity"?

"How do you measure "popularity"?  I understand your personal romantic and nostalgic connection to the past,  but that doesn't keep the lights on.  Well you measure"popularity in terms of match-day attendances, broadcast viewers, media interest and sponsorships. That's the ugly truth.

Despite FORTY TWO unique clubs playing in the NSL, the attendances didn't increase, the viewership numbers were rubbish, the sponsorships small, the media attention was scant.

The popularity never grew:

I agree with you 100% on EVERYTHING above Enzo.... the NSL was a red hot steaming dumpster fire.... Using "nostalgia" and  "personal romanticism" as a handbrakes for moving on to the next stage of evolution doesn't help me OR you.  Those 42 clubs wanted to but COULDNT market themselves beyond their meagre resources, thats the point... We now have mainstream media, an absolutely stellar home world cup and potentially thousands of young boys and girls looking to swell our playing pool next year... THEY are the future. 11 Australia clubs to support wont work for us, this is beyond the AFL and NRL, we need every single kiddie that is looking on in amazement at this new found "window into the world of the beautiful game" to join the hundreds of thousands of other at their local club. This club should have enough pitches, lights, changerooms and staff to cater for them... The bigger these clubs grow, they more they want to achieve so they can attract more players and support... THATS what Pro/rel can add, THATS what should have been set up in 1977 or in 2005 or in 2024...Build from the bottom, have a club like Middies famous Woy Woy screaming up the divisions because they have 5000 juniors, a full time admin and coaching staff, 4 pitches and 500 punters through the doors on seniors matchday.... fuck the APL and how much money they make man.... Fuck the NSL and how it held soccer in this country back... lets move forward.....   Those tiny communities (whether they be geographical, religious or ethnic) you dismiss can do amazing things...Having 1000 clubs be slightly more popular means the sport iteslef will be massively more popular...  People gravitate towards their own enclaves, they dont do well when told who their "tribe" is.... If AFL was to start up next year from scratch and designate new franchises to new areas it will die in 2 seasons......

Your fascination with the 42 is misleading

If Melbourne Victory get relegated, that will be very very interesting,
The journey from possibly, to probably, to actually happening would create much more media interest than any APL manufactured nonsense

The following Season, Melbourne Victory would be hot favourites to get promoted back
That journey and the chance of them possibly failing, to probably going up to actually going back up would also generate much more interest
Add to that the previously promoted teams battle to stay "in with the big boys" and maybe failing

Net result after 2 seasons is exactly the same sets of teams in the leagues, but actual, genuine interest along the way,
It could have been any of the 'Big Boys' who dropped, and it could've been any of the NSD's that went up.

That adventure is in the mind & actions of all 24

Authenticity is important for some but less so for others

Right now the APL is stuck with a fishing rod with only plastic bait
Right now the NPL is stuck with only a small pond to fish in

Open it up and let everyone fish anywhere with whatever they have available

Every club starts as a 'tiny community'.

Some stay that way, some give up, others grow

They grow because of many reasons, they might just be well run, have a natural monopoly, a wealthy benefactor or other revenue stream, or some crazy events that no-one predicted.

Right now, they're stop still at maximum NPL level with nowhere to go.
Meanwhile the APL is carrying Duds that they're insisting 'must survive' because....erm.... metrics

The Club dynamics can be answered by these links:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/marquee-players-are-overrated-says-new-a-league-advisor-scudamore-20191115-p53b1p.html

http://pfa.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Attachment-1-in-text-FORTHEFANS.pdf

Bingo, the a-leagues both male and female should cater for the national teams, after all they our flag bearers for the sport and our face when we compete internationally.

The AFL and NRL dont have that global presence like football does, AFL especially so they interests lies only here so its normal their sports will get alot of attention and of course their support is generational meanwhile the a-league is very young and struggles to get attention against these more established codes.

How to get more fans involved is fine but thats not the main priority and maybe too much energy has been focused on crowds and ratings when its not that straight forward to get fans in the gate when they are so many distractions in supporting a local league especially more popular overseas leagues that are more lucrative too.

The selling point of seeing the stars of tomorrow and seeing them at big leagues and clubs overseas will make our national teams stronger, and that should be the direction going forward for the APL anything else will have a ceiling especially following the AFL, NRL model who have a different footprint to football.

It will also make our Clubs stronger from Transfer Fees and the search for the next big thing.
JJ made it painfully clear that we were missing out the Transfer system gravy train in 2020.

Actually more fans involved IS the main priority.  Without the fans- as we've seen in the A-League, football is nothing.

Football without fans is true but too many decisions have been made for the best of commercial realities and less about football excellence.

So its a balance it needs to be maintained and improved after all its a football league, for example Graham Arnold continues to call on the league needing more games and having a longer season because they dont play enough games compared to overseas.

Its something that needs to be addressed because this problem wont go away but I do agree the more the fans the better.

ill chime in
we need to have a second tier , and a domestic transfer system
a team from canberra and tassie must be in the second tier.
Rectangular stadiums only , no more playing at AFL grounds , they can fark off.

Govt has to provide increased funding for Wleague players.
access to facilities needs to improve.

If anything it indicates just how wide the gap between NSL and state-league football had become in less than seven years; certainly wider than the mob in charge then had estimated..

But bc there’ll be a second-tier(& hopefully at least a third in future🙏🏼) in place this time, thus allowing for an actual calibration of standards across the board, is why it will succeed now.

What I expect to see coming out of the WWC is a large number of girls and ladies fronting up to clubs next season wanting to get a game and finding that the clubs aren't ready for them.  Right across Australia we need clubs and competitions planning now how they will run if suddenly the demand increases by 25-50-100% with the most of the increase driven by people who are new to the game. What will the club with 200 players with 40 or 50 females do when another 20 to 50 want to play?  What about the larger clubs in FNSW and Capital Football with 1000+players?  Do the State Feds need to be budgeting for seed funding for new grassroots clubs and growing grassroots clubs to cater for the increased demand?

I don't expect that there will be much difference at the elite levels of the football ecosystem.  New players will move through to that as they develop and are spotted over the next decade but the influx of grassroots players brings with it the potential for new football fans provided they get a good and enjoyable introduction to the beautiful game and provided that the clubs at the various levels of the elite game are active within their local community and their wider community of interest.

Absolutely 100% Flytox..... hit the nail on the head.... we deseprately need funding for lower tier clubs to increase their facilities, grounds, change rooms, floodlights etc etc... better funded clubs will offer better facilities, will increase popularity and so the wheel turns....

The thing is this, participation rates have never been a problem in our game.

The first problem is we don't have the facilities to accommodate them all,
The second problem is we don't have the "destinations" for them.

As a former womens coach in capital football, I can attest. It's not even high level stuff we're talking about. We're talking about there being no fucking changerooms and the girls either wait for the men to clear out or they change behind a shed.

Sadly, Flytox is right. The immediate change to this situation will be there'll be an extra 100 of them at each club.

very good points Flytox/BA81/banzai and not unexpected from you unlike Enzo bringing up the past having a sore neck and all about the top.......
This type of thinking never gets us anywhere and part of the prob.

Its about underneath first and foremost.
The womens growth is going to keep going and great, as Flytox mentions there are Clubs but is there enough but more so local "grounds" - better facilities etcetc......
The lower eco system needs the funding and lobbying with councils this is on the FA and the State Feds waking the fuck up, there's a struggle every season over ground availability due to cricket season, too much sharing of fields with other codes, so many Teams in Clubs talking Sydney training nights is a mosh pit at many, if syn pitch's are the need as it seems going this way more needs to be done about this as well.
Fees, its OTT as we all know, not just the girls the young boys.

That idiot albo riding off the back of the Matildas and ol Hawkey times blubbering about a public holiday - seriously what a piss take and kudos to the below
‘Fund our f***king sport’: Ex-Matilda’s vicious Alboattack
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has copped a withering spray from a formerMatildas star in response to his push for a public holiday following the WorldCup.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/world-cup/fifa-womens-world-cup-2023-latest-news-results-blog-exmatildas-star-melissa-barbieri-unloads-on-prime-minister-anthony-albanese-over-lack-of-funding-australia-vs-france/news-story/c68e9cd73a573c964336065acc60b29b

Take note FA - time to step up the plate and lobby the Gov finally for our tax payers $$$ instead of pissing down the drain elsewhere as you normally do and stuff a public hol.
Just as GA shakes his head our lacking here and not even a proper dedicated facility for our 2 NT Football teams.
Its seriously is a joke.

The legacy for me is more boys and girls are going to want to play football.

With luck that will translate to better facilities and more opportunities for football.

More opportunity to lobby the government for a fairer suck of the sav.

I doubt more people will go to the A League women's because of the world cup.

yer I agree, come on Muz, there will be some influence - not going OTT but there will be an increase in local regos and maybe just maybe some football playing girls for starters may think you know what, lets go to the local ALW game one day arvo or night.
Then there is plenty single Mums out there with their daughters playing, you'd expect 1 or 2 going to a game ???
Small steps mate, just like womens football beginnings and look where it is now.

I know this kind of talk is subjective but here's a different example, I'm also a wannbee golf hacker.
I bought one of these latest greatest bloody wide mallet putters smilar what the Pro's use.
Didn't like it, so recently I got my boy put it on FB market place and not cheap cheap.
Within 2 days it was gone, this guy turned up saying having watched a recent USA tournament winner sink a few 50 footers its a winner.
Maybe not the best comparo but know what I mean.

Success exposure does draw some in, similar to sponsership, how do you gauge the ROI ?
In time you can see the benefit.

Surely sponsorship will go through the roof now. The girls are so marketable and relatable. Such a fair bunch of hard workers. Online socials are pretty strong for the Matildas. There seems to be a link in the Lionessnes and WPL as Women's football and people go and enjoy it. The ALW really needs to promote that future Matildas play in this league and need all the support.

Mary Fowler is on track to be on every billboard in Aus/

Score and we win Wednesday - sky is the limit.

This whole team is already hugely marketable. Nearly everyone in Aus can name a footballer player now.

A question we could maybe ask is

"HAVE WE ALL BEEN WRONG ABOUT HOW TO FIX FOOTBALL?"

Over the years of discussions on how to improve the game, get funding, and get coverage - not many throughout the matildas as the pathway to increased visibility for the game. Not saying our ills have been cured in the slightest, but we can build massively off this

Certainly looks likely to be a way of getting some money into the game from the Federal Government, hopefully in the grass roots for all the manna be Matildas.

I see your point but I reckon could have been the same if it was a home men's WC and the Socceroos were in the same position..... Australians love an underdog story, especially one of our own making.

Oh yeah for sure, but this is an entirely different demographic of people that are into it - I am not sure they'd all be there for our men's team. Sure it can be a sugar hit, but I reckon a fair few are on the hook - and the politicians will have to act and tip money in.

very true......  I know some will get shitty at this observation, but it reminds me of when the Aleague first started and we qualified for Germany 06.......  Im having the same conversations with very enthusiastic people who all of a sudden want to talk about inverted wing-backs and "who is starting at the #6 role do you reckon?"  If the Tillies win, the snowball will grow, lose (badly) and it will all be forgotten...  I hope the ones on the hook can find an attachment to a local club to keep the ball rolling. :)

Don't know why anyone would be shitty at that observation, it seems pretty spot on.

People should remember the difference between the early 2000s and 2006 in the local game. In 2002-03 we had failed to qualify for the WC yet again (and not even with the epic drama of the Iran loss), and the NSL was visibly dying. The only broadcaster interested in funding the league was doing so to bury it in order to please the AFL. Meanwhile the administrators were mostly interested in corrupt shenanigans rather than actually developing the sport - remember this was when Tony Labozetta was federation chair and taking his Oceania counterparts to brothels.

The turnaround by 2006 was phenomenal: not just qualifying for the WC, but the euphoria of the tournament itself. Socceroos all over the media, advertising, etc. And the early seasons of the A-League to take advantage of it. The sky really was the limit.

Hopefully the WWC is the impetus for a similar turnaround after the doldrums and infighting of the last few years. Although obviously it will be different, driven by the women's side of the game.

The thing that this WC, in combination with the mens world cup performance just prior, 2006..... the kids. Compare this to kids born in the 50s. 80s. They grew up on an anti wog diet their whole lives and the closest you could ever get to recovering them is to not be openly hostile to us.

These new kids have had that defining happy experience in their childhoods. They will grow in the majority immune to the anti sockah bs. They may not all become fans or players. They won't merely "tolerate" us. There will be a space for the sport in their minds that just stays there.

When I was a kid, I had a 45 minute half replay of NSL on a Sunday night. I had no chance in hell of watching premier league on TV and waited for that 3 minute story in the FTA nightly news bulletin where they would show Harry scoring for Leeds. Our kids have been utterly saturated with the sport and positive energy. If sockah was a sleeping giant when we were growing up, fuck me dead at what happens next!

Fair enough and all valid points... In the early 2000s the so called "new dawn" popped out of nowhere as a die hard football fanatic group of supporters who didnt previously have an Australian club to follow for "effnik" reasons... the sky really was the limit......... but ..........  two decades later there are really no excuses, no more Labozettas, no more 2am broadcasts, no more effniks, no more Oceania 55-0 drubbings.... I hope the APL is able to capitalise.....

Meanwhile the  remaining 99.99% of football in Australia quietly plods along with scraps from the big table.

Release the fixtures for A-league men and A-league womens upcoming seasons and provide free entry to one game for everyone who has purchased a ticket to the WWC.

Just release the fixtures as a starting point

According to an article I read this morning Sydney FC have already sold more memberships 2 months out from the season start than they did last year.

Not sure if that was men's or women's but still there's an effect happening.

yea the AL structure is shit the lack of PR kind of is the heart of the shit structure but their is more too it then that the entire league is very plastic and lacks any real passion - i think use of over-sized stadiums certainly doesnt help

Reality is, after the WWC football will become a distant memory, and crowds will go back to being what they always are....

the only positive moving forward, is the participation levels would increase in junior women's grassroot football.

so dont expect 30k at the next Macarthur vs CCM match.

I think there's also a bit of a wider appreciation of the World Cup (mens & womens) in wider Australian culture.
It was already starting to happen, but this WC in particular has accelerated it.

People (outside of us football fans) are becoming more aware that qualifying for, winning a match or two, and making the 2nd round of a World Cup in a sport that literally the entire planet plays is a much bigger achievement than winning a tournament that only a handful of countries play (eg: Rugby, Cricket, Netball)

Thats great mate but if Sydney FC already had a junior women's setup instead of just boys academy they would have 1000 plus womens members just from all the players and parents across their junior teams by now...... Aleague is playing catch up which is good BUT instead of trying to get more fans maybe the can open up their academy for girls?

I mean they will still be poaching young players from everywhere else like the boys but at least another pathway for the young girls coming in..... instead they look at how they can "market" the buzz.....

The SA govt. have decided they will invest in women's sport instead of giving a public holiday assuming we win the whole thing, but football will only get 10 out of the allotted 18 million, im assuming the other 8 will go to AFL? *cough*

I have a feeling the other sports will try and milk the success from the Matildas and divert the attention into 'women's sport' as opposed to women's football or football in general.

Im have a bad feeling where this whole thing will land up...

Exactly that. Let the council oval space battles begins where other sports will try and pressure to as much space and funding as possible under the guise of women's and youth sport.

As someone who grew up in Adelaide, I can say that maybe it won't be that bad. Because in some areas, football is so hopelessly last that it would be hard to make an argument for upgrading the foodeee ground. I mean, embarassingly hard. In the area I grew up, the immediate surrounds had one aussie rules ground with a club house. The club house had pokies in it and of course whatever funding that was ever given went straight there. The nerve on these guys as well - the club house has poker machines in it and they even dole out wages to "amateur" aussie rules players. We're talking 4th division local amateurs for gods sake. Over the road there was a large park with playing fields. It was shared between baseball and football. From memory, we're talking something like 12 football pitches, one after the other. Utterly packed on a weekend. And not a single changing room for all the eyes could see. So, I think in that instance, it'd be damned hard for aussie rules to take away that money when they have their own field already.

Won't mean they'll try though. You only need to get a few numnuts at a council/community consultation to stand up and yell "what about tha cammuuuunity!!!!" and cry for poor old australian rules.

Gotta wonder how these social media algorithms really work and how they're related to the ad spend. I got myself some peace by investing my time in searching then blocking just about every god damn AFL page and group I could find and what do I have for it? FB thinks I'm not interested in ever having AL memes, matildas or socceroos on my main feed (despite like/following) and today it's suggesting "AFL Riverina" ? Apparently the Turvey Park Bulldogs are the most important thingm going around today.

In a way they havent mate......

Making out of the groups stage is a MASSIVE undertaking that all of us soccer nerds understand but the rest of Australia sees it as our God given right as Australians and failure to do so means we are shit at the sport so nobody follows.....

Even now, on the cusp of making a World Cup final, do you think any of the bastards previously bagging out soccer for all of their lives can actually comprehend how huge this is????  If it wasnt on our door step I reckon the buzz would have been massively smaller ... all the pieces have just fallen in their laps for the Matildas, Win and this will be remembered forever, lose and it will be last weeks news...... its sad but its true....

Won't be for everyone. Those with only transient interest are unlikely ever to become genuine fans. The people we need to convince are those who OUGHT to be fans. Those who already have skin in the game but dismiss Australia as a football entity because we don't always win (like NRL tests) or never get beaten (like AFL because no-one else plays it).

I estimate there are well over 5 mill people in Australia with at least a family link to football, and close to 2 mill people with a pretty direct link. These are the low hanging fruit that need to be converted.

Of course, Australian football has to get its shambles of a house in order first but the Matildas are certainly doing their bit.

Just did a quick finger and toes count of "live sites" for tonight's game.  (I may have counted toes wrongly as I left shoes on).

71 Live sites !!!!

44 in NSW alone.

Let that sink in.

Definitely they are more popular now then the Socceroos. There a a couple of reasons-firstly they have had a very successful WC tournament with a SF berth and this is a tremendous achievement.Secondly they are a female sports team and as with the women cricketers, netballers swimmers and hockey players women's sport is being pushed to to the forefront by the media and politicians. There is nothing wrong with that because it gets women and girls interested in sport and encourages them to partake as participants and spectators. The Matildas are seen as one of the mainstays for female sports and that they are a football team is somewhat secondary to the fact that they are a pretty successful and marketable female entity.

The Socceroos on the other hand who did well in the last WC do play against other national teams where football is the number one sport and though reaching the R of 16  and only just losing to the eventual winners who had the GOAT in their ranks was appreciated do mainly appeal to football fans.I know there are bandwagoners who do follow the male team when they have some success but they have limited appeal when compared to the Matildas who are now known and appreciated by a larger section of the population.Perhaps a male WC held in Australia and with a well performing Socceroos going deep into the tournament would see a similar rise in the men's popularity.

Thats my take on things too Booney.... There will be a big uptake of young girls taking up competitive team sport (hopefully) after this tournament, I hope the FA are geared up to make sure that a majority of them choose football....  When mums and dads see how much cheaper it is to play something else we may loose quite a few.....

It's a genuine issue for many. A mate of mine just had to ask his kid to pick one sport, as due to cost-of-living/interest rate stuff they can't afford them all. Kid was playing basketball, football, cricket, tennis, athletics and was interested in trying AFL next year as well. Good kid, didn't make a fuss, just said as long as he can play football he'll be happy. My mate was secretly hoping for basketball as it's the cheapest. The kid is a decent little defender too.

Straight back to square one with the media I guess...

Time for me to put on an AFL jersey and head to Melbourne and light flares to see the double standards I think.

This is a big call to be honest, because that's not just a government run fan-site (like Canberra's was), it's an official FIFA Fan Festival site.

To do this when only a very small minority were involved is a tad harsh for the rest, seems very reactionary.

Yeah it's because the police arrest anyone holding them. If the police just stayed where they were then the clowns wouldn't have to throw them.

Yeah it's because the police arrest anyone holding them. If the police just stayed where they were then the clowns wouldn't have to throw them.

C'mon Muz, thats NOT what I am saying...... The police ALWAYS tried to arrest people letting off flares..... just drop them, you dont have to throw them at someone.....

I hope they don't try and come to Athens for the re-scheduled UCL qualifier ... this may be the one and only time in history all the Greek hools fight on the same side....  I wonder which country gets kicked out of UEFA to make way for the Saudis first. hahahahahahahahah

Except the Panathinaikos fans, who fought with the croats.
DNA test have revealed it wasn't a cro who killed the AEK fan, but a greek citizen.
Greek authorities are trying to save face, and blame others, when they only got themselves to blame.

There is a reason why in the greek league no away fans are allowed. what's that 7 football related deaths in a decade from stabbing attacks, molotov cocktails etc. Uncivilized baboons.

Yeah sure..... The two Greeks involved will be justly tried and punished if found guilty, apparently there is one more as well.and they deserve everything coming to them, enough is enough and I am  Panathinakos fan..... as for the Bad Blue Fairies.... hahahahaha .... Their mummies and daddies can beg that rude, red faced little PM to intervene all they want.... these bad boys are gonna go down.....  great to see AEK smack them up on the pitch in Zagreb too :)

100% agree... But these guys though..... planned this like a military operation and beat the shit out of a bunch of scarfers sitting in a cafe minding their own business.... At least have the decency to "arrange"  a place to meet and fight out of the way of civilians, like in the good ol days.

Anyway apparently UEFA have had a enough and some hefty bans coming I would think..... Sick of this shit ... I guess thats the problem when football becomes "too popular" maybe we are lucky here in Australia getting back to the topic :)

Unfortunately in Greece, flares and hooliganism is well accepted and the authorities pay lip service to the issue.

I've seen 8 - 12 year olds let off crackers and flares at village games without one bit of rebuff from the adults attending or club members. In fact, it's applauded.

There lies your problem.

I heard from someone that the fucksticks were throwing the flares into the crowd and people got burnt.... Sheesh I love flares more than most but hold them or drop them on the ground..... its not rocket science.

They are banned for a reason, this is not like Europe where the rules and authority may accept it.

Weather we like it or not the culture and the rules are different here, the game is passionate as it is without it so I dont know why we need them in the match experience anyway.

I think people like to fit in with the 'culture' and try to make it about themselves which is an society problem too.

Monkey see, monkey do mate... They arent exactly legal overseas either btw..... Its not a society problem as much as it is a "young man" problem.

Anyway FA and APL can't have their cake AND eat it as well... They love posting images on social media about the "Passion" TM pending and the endless attempt at making Karen and Shane believe that Australia really IS a football country....

Live site is off because wait...."disappointing", it sounds like a grandma's summation. That is the type of language used when you have no solid incident.

However, I agree throwing a flare into a crowd is retarded and you deserve a punch in the chops if you do it.

When we were kids at school we were taught 'Grip, rip & tip' Hold it firm, rip it, and then tip it onto the ground.

A League attendances and ratings not declining again would be welcome. And no, increases after Covid don't count.
The only figures that's matter for you comparison are the last pre covid season.

Easiest way to maintain popularity is to increase the quality.

People will now want to watch the Womens A-league and more Matildas games, which is great, but if we produce turgid and uninspiring football, the knives will come out and people will turn away.

It's the same issue the Mens A-league had. Massive interest and spike off the back of the '06 Socceroos. The Roar then upped the game, and then, it all went downhill quickly. The A-league and the Socceroos and we eventually saw a massive plateau of the local league and interest in the game.

For mine it  was the Aus media.

Journos and reporters came from everywhere in Aus - that I had barely heard of before in a football context. They covered everything about the Matlidas, obviously  authorised by their bosses.

I could  not believe all the journos ( who I'd never heard of before in a football context) who were saying how much they loved the game of football and how much they liked reporting on it. I'm surmising they will all disappear now and normal coverage of egg ball and every other sport, except football, will resume.

One event was poignant though. Bruce McAvaney, who most of us thought shouldn't report on football at all, stated that even though he loved AFL, no sport has anything like the capacity of football to galvanise the nation uniting behind a national team like the Matildas have  achieved in the last few weeks.

I feel like I've seen this before. With every major tournament, there's an increase in interest for football. The increase has been larger since it was here but I feel like in a month or so, the interest will return to normal. Australia is not a football country. I hope it changes but I don't think it will in my lifetime.

As the world gets smaller and people become increasingly conscious that there is only one truly global game, we will increasingly take it seriously if we want a seat at that table.

When I say "we" I mean everyone.

Hopefully, this world cup has made a permanent impression on the young.

That's been said many a times before but to no avail. Soccer people don't seem to know how to capitalize but are really good in shooting themselves in the foot.

It’s a step in the right direction from a (taxpayer funded) organisation that routinely ignores football but is over the top on AFL reporting.

ALW really should have started either this weekend or the following weekend. The October start means there is nearly 2 months gap from the WC. Momentum will almost certainly have dwindled by then.

Look, I know we only have 2 players from the A-League in the World Cup Matildas' squad. But hard no from me.
Yes, it should be earlier than it is, but that's only a 1-2 week break between the World Cup and the season starting. Should generally be around a month.

Maybe, but either way it should be way less than 8 weeks.

Same with the mens's also, I dont know why the APL is wanting to start the a-league season after the egg ball codes are done.
Why they are scared? Seriously.

Talking about not building on the momentum, then again its the APL we are talking about here.

Sort of. The FA actually sets which months the A-Leagues takes place, then the APL sets specific dates/times of the individual matches within those months. That being said, I reckon FA would be making their decision based on direct input from the APL.

Well Graham Arnold is calling for a longer season anyway, it seems they are listening to the APLs input as you mentioned and they dont want the season to start sooner.

Anyway I dont understand why the sport needs to do this, just back yourself and go your own way after all the players need more games if they want to compete at higher levels of the game.

Particularly because they could have also paused the league in January for the Asia Cup, where there is a good chance the Socceroos will go deep in the tournament. So starting a few weeks earlier in September it would have had a double advantage: take advantage of the WWC momentum, and avoid the AC (plus the worst of the summer heat). Instead, because they're afraid of going up against the AFL/NRL, we have to wait two months after the end of the WWC, and then play a chunk of the season without Goodwin, McLaren, etc.

And AFLW starts in a week, so anyone inspired by the Matildas looking for a women's sport fix will be served by AFL rather than football. Farce.

Yep, 'equal' in that sense is total prize money, but distributed amongst 8 teams rather than 4 (so really, it's half). Another great example of AFL spinning the media to invent women's sport

Very good points. My two young daughters (6 & 4) are so keen to go to more matches and with kids you gotta strike while the iron is hot!!

At least Victory is putting out some good content and signing announcements for the women's team, which is building some excitement.

Would probably be due to us having a shorter season than lining it up with Europe. Where it is and it's length sort of makes it sit perfectly to align with each of the following in some way:

* After egg ball
* During Euro season
* Most of the season in one side of the year

MV have just hit 1000 womens memberships, which is a new record. With SFC breaking their record lasts week, I wouldn't at all be surprised if they too were able to hit 1000 before the season starts. Although those numbers sound small (relatively speaking), it does demonstrate the missed opportunity of scheduling the league 2 months after the cup. Let's just hope they fix the scheduling issues and the women don't have to play at 3pm in the middle of summer.

Have they got the facilities though?

Potential players have already been put off with the lack thereof, imagine what a spike would do apart from the initial interest.
