Black/brown was never mentioned. I thought the thread referred to the dominance of Anglo surnames and the lack of Italian, Greek, Yugo names etc in the Matildas.

I read the initial question but not much in between, so sorry for being out of step with the conversation.
My thoughts - no. Aussies love winners, regardless of how many people they beat, (and the Matildas certainly beat a fair few).
The cricket team have long been the most popular team because they win all the time, even though there are only 10 test nations and 2-3 legitimate competitors to their dominance. When the Wallabies were winning they were hugely popular, even though about 14 countries took the game seriously and there were about 4 that stood a chance of beating us. You can see it now with the attempt to carve out a distinct identity for the Olympic swimming team. Even in 2006, it didn’t matter what the players names were, Aussies jumped on the bandwagon of Socceroo success.
Bandwagon Aussies don’t care about “”biggest game in the world”, they see a ranking of 40th as failure. They want to see trophies lifted and medals won, they want to see winners and people can sense potential winners, or at least someone to cheer a very long way in the Matildas.

(2) They want to see trophies lifted and medals won, they want to see winners and people can sense potential winners, or at least someone to cheer a very long way in the Matildas. (1) They fvcken well ought to, but dare I say that's a whole separate discussion. (2) Not ever gonna happen by playing/coaching anything remotely aesthetically-similar to the b0g@n fightball-codes, IMHO. This is much more relevant to the mens' game than the womens', but eventually at the latter they'll have to adapt to that also eventually.
