+xThank fuckin god the olyroos missed this Olympics That opening ceremony will go down in history just as badly as those "last supper" drag queens I thought they were making good time splitting up the boats and some entertainment. The key stuff was all at the end as per usual but that dragged the initial 3 hours on. It started well being different and generally French but Lady Gaga and a bit of the other random or weird shit slowed it down. The French rapper was actually very popular.

The Olympic tradition is one that never needed breaking. The last Olympics to really deviate from the norm and ending in disaster was Atlanta. A 2 week long coca-cola commercial and it was embarassing. This again... what needed changing. You all march together into the stadium. How fucking hard is that. Apparently they spent 1.5 billion choreographing this disaster. All risk and never any reward.

That was a freaken weird opening ceremony
Also its as if nothing existed before the french revolution except greek mythology
Feel bad for anyone watching it live since it seems to be made for tv (not to mention the rain)
Also why have lady gaga, celine dion and minions
Theur connection to french culture is pretty tenuous. Do the french really have so little from their own history and culture to be proud of?

On the bright side, Brisbane is going to fuck it up a whole lot less. In relative terms.

The tradition has to remain. Sydney did an excellent job in using the band and maintaining the officialdom of it all. China, London, Brazil embraced the technology of the day and really showed of their part of the world while not breaking the deeper traditions of the ceremony.

Important issues but incredibly messy in how quickly the cheques get signed and where the money goes and post event few questions are asked.

Finally got to watch the full replay for the Tillies. We were not that bad - just not good where and when we needed to be. We were flattered heavily by the scoreline. Rarely a chance to score, but the last ten minutes we were trashed by the German team - with several brilliant opportunities for them to score and just missing the ball with a lunge by narrow margins or just missing the goal with our keeper beaten. Three more goals would not have been unfair the way they combined and attacked. To me, Foord is not a striker and Gustarssol set us up to fail in the front third. I would not be surprised to hear that he decided the game was basically unwinnable and he saved our attacking legs for the rest of the tournament - not a bad thing necessarily if that was deliberate. Taking off Raso, who creates chances, and bringing on Heyman supported by Van Egmond is another wasted set of subs. No point to it at all as Van Egmond does not apply meaningful pressure, does not have the speed to make space, and could only feed Heyman if the German players all fell over. They were a well organised and skilled opponent and very solid at the back. Several times we ran into our own players, passed into our own players or contested the same ball. Just not a cohesive team. I think our poor touch is responsible for most of that - with players knocking the ball a couple of metres further than intended then having two Tillies try to recover when it rolls into space. We needed our backline to be much more resilient and beaten by a quality opponent than have them all looking at each other time and again while Germany exposed our inability to close off the goal area. Yes I know it is childish, but Janina Minge? What a name! Got to love that German sense of humour. We are not out of the tournament, with many positives in our general play against a very good opponent. Hopefully Germany beat everyone and it is up to us to make good on our next two games.

Do you need Stan to watch the Olympics? I'm not sure I'll bother if you do.

+xDo you need Stan to watch the Olympics? I'm not sure I'll bother if you do. 9NOW has it live, and if you wait awhile they put the Tillies replay on. I think if you have the 9NOW app you can watch anything live - but I have not tested that yet.

Watching that diving again. She nearly slipped off the board. Gutting.
Basketball win and swimmers pulled through but the others went hard in the early laps causing a slight nervousness.

Rugby 7s in 5min against Fiji. A win guarantees a medal but a playoff for bronze the minimum. Aus cyclist looking aright in the time trial. The USA favourite who started the very last slipped over which should be a dent.

Aus cyclist 51 sec ahead at the 21km split of a 32km race so now it'll be a tense final 11km without knowing how fast the rest went in the final third.
Full men's football session again. Dom Rep level with Spain but a red card at HT. Argentina Iraq 1:1 HT

Damn our male time trialist crashed out having been ranked 4th at the split. Would've been a close run to the line. Hope he's ok.

It's just terribly officiating by the French ref. Early calls against against that were blatantly wrong. The red card was right in the shit modern rules of rugby but the attacker dips his head into the shoulder.

In a 14 minute match bad calls matter a lot and we had em 2 matches in a row red card was fair though in the modern game and a brain explosion

What on earth? Australia with two tries and a kick to win it from sideline. Very tough and it's missed and South Africa are able to score after time has run out. That's so so bitter. The ref was shocking. Absolutely appalling.

I get player safety but it makes it harder for defenders. Plenty of times the attacker dips and is rewarded. Just gutted. They taunted with those late tries. Conversion kick was a bit hasty. Had the distance.
