We may not look like world-beaters at the moment, but we're not THAT far off the pace. 7/8th sounds about right for me; we could do better, we could do worse but I expect to be in the mix for the last finals spot again and probably just falling short. Should be moving up the ladder in coming seasons as the new philosophy takes hold. Yep, would be happy with 6th and finals. Should be above Nix, around the same as Newy and then whoever has fallen from the over-rated clubs.

Tend to agree that there will probably be 4 teams fighting for the final 2 finals spots, and we'll be one of them.
Would imagine the new signing is a LTI replacement, be interesting to see if they have to sign a 'like for like' or not...

On another note - bloody oath, I can't believe how badly we're being rated by the bookies. 7th/8th place finishes tipped. We may not look like world-beaters at the moment, but we're not THAT far off the pace. NOBODY - EVER - Tips Glory... well, not that I can recall, well, not over East anyway?! That's part of what I was talking/moaning/ranting about before in a couple threads, Glory are lucky if they even get a mention in 'A-League talk' over East, let alone more of a fairer look in and consideration, even WHEN Glory HAVE had highly competitive, star laden, teams that made finals and could even be considered 'dark horses' these past few seasons. Albeit, in real terms, the more hardcore/analytical of we 'A-League fans' knew that Glory, most seasons, were never really contenders. And yeah, I know, that's what some of you say as to 'why' people over East 'never' rate Glory's team, but it's obviously part of a culture of apathy denial, in fair part, 'well earned', yes, but Glory much been much more competitive recent seasons, including that Grand Final appearance, which surprised most. Sooo arrogant, part of me really hopes Glory can 'burst their bubble', shake up the 'Melbourne-Sydney' status quo, once again, though yes, I do more rationally recognise this is a younger more transitional team and just reaching this year's top 6 would be good going. BTW Thanks to the 'overlooked child syndrome' and healthy degree of ignorance over East - IF you are a tipster or even punter (Not advocating gaming), it COULD mean we out West have an advantage when it comes to these things, being a bit more informed of Glory's capabilities - so when so-called 'upsets' do occur, they over East may be surprised, but we may not be so much. Same too with 'Fantasy teams' with the likes of Risdon, De Silva, MacLaren and other more 'little regarded' talents (Relative to others)coming through who may end up being 'Fantasy team' worthy! Though I guess players from within the squad can also play those possies - Like Clisby at LB if need be, or, I don't know who (Zahra?), at RB? But yeah, could be as some of you joked - IF it IS another sponsor, then that can't be too bad, for the bottom line that is. Maybe it's a sponsor for a yet to be announced Membership Campaign - late arriving, but in with a bang with newly announced member target of 10k and all (10k Member Targets seem all the rage at the moment, see Roar and AU! lol)! :p actually... Maybe it IS Membership related, i.e. *Insert some West Aus celebrity/personality* 'signed up' as a Glory member, like how the Mariners announced when Mark Waugh became a member and uploaded a photo with him holding a sign with his 'Member number' on there? :-k :p hotrod wrote:Captain Banal wrote:Nate wrote:On another note - bloody oath, I can't believe how badly we're being rated by the bookies. 7th/8th place finishes tipped. That wasn't hard. :d Sydney FC or their squad isn't anywhere near as good as some think it is. Most of their VISAs are varying degrees of 'duds' or potential duds - they might still prove me wrong though. SFC kind of 'have to' to well with ADP there, hopefully they do. They will still scrape six IMHO So... I actually have a feeling that ' The Mariners', believe it or not, may have mixed fortunes, especially early? They've lost some key players, good talent and while they've recruited well too, they haven't filled all the departures with the same level talent. More will be expected of some younger boys, especially in defence. And IF Sainsbury departs circa January too, then even more interruption. Can't be too sure IF Flores 're-ignites' or just hums along with same Victory form too. And McBreen is on-loan for quite a while too, another interruption to their season. This bridge (challenge) just may be that bit farther for Arnie this season. Not saying they be bottom four, just they may be fighting for Top 6 with the rest of us, rather than Top 3 with Wanderers, Roar and co. That's just my feeling anyway. Anyway it MAY be 'even tighter' between 5th and 9th/10th than it was last season. There could be alot of chop and changing of positions, with most teams struggling for consistency or to 'break free' - the teams that can sustain a good run of 'consecutive results' circa January or so, or 'time their run' could be the ones to do it - Just like Glory and Roar did, last season! The Rhino has signed on for another 3 years. I guess re-signing was what Shayne Hope should have said...

So it wasn't a player signing? Well at least it was about a player this time
Happy with Vukovic staying, he's an above-average goalie for this league so it's one less headache

Happy with Vuka staying. If we can tie thwaity down a little longer I'll be stoked too!
So Jacob burns' contract is up after this year right? So before we see him play this season, what are people's inclinations about him? Time to hang the boots up or another contract?

I think this year will be his last. I don't see his body continuing to hold out another full season after this one, and if nothing else I think there are younger guys in the squad who need to start challenging for a central midfield role. McGarry is a year and a half younger and will probably need to hang round an extra year if he can to keep some experience in midfield, but assuming someone else can come through I'd say we should be able to transition without Burnsy. We'll miss his reading of play and his physicality, but at the same time we could probably do with a little more mobility than a 35 year old offers.

Burns has a decent long ball too, but I'm not sure Edwards will encourage that, and that just about nullifies him going forward. Will be interested to see how he's going come January.

I don't think so... there are many deluded posts on here, but they tend to be more of the 'educated by FIFA' type than truly insane :D You never know though...
BTW, Glory v Stirling tomorrow night at Macedonia Park, 7pm. Fundraising for PMH for Children; get down there and help out if you can.

No deluded posts 'ere ...
Burns only 1 more year? Then who is going to be our set piece specialist? We are sooo tooo quick to throw out someone without thinking through all the attributes they give to the team ... (I am so looking forward to seeing just how much progress we've made in this area this season)

I like Burns as a player... but I don't rate him as a captain so much so I won't be too disappointed when he goes.
If he does retire at the end of the season, the next captain will be an interesting call... Thwaite if he sticks at the club would be the obvious choice, although Dodd will be considered if he returns from his injury. Vukovic as GK or McGarry as our first foreign captain would be interesting outside chances.
Younger candidates would be Risdon and Jamieson... if Burns stuck around for 2 more seasons then youngsters like Clisby or O'Neill might come into play.
I also agree with the above post that the Mariners might be in for a tough season. They've always found a way in the past, but losingh Ryan, Ibini and the others is a big dent and the talent pool may be starting to run dry. I'll happily back Glory in for 5th-8th.

If he even gets another contract I will be writing a strongly worded letter to the club

My preference of future captain - if he has a good season and assuming all his off field antics are sorted out - has to be Ljubo!
