McGarry offered a coaching role and Burns is expected to be there too.

Fair enough... you can look at those guys and say that they weren't very well known and didn't have a lot of experience, but Gombau's experience before Adelaide was in youth coaching (admittedly at a very high level) and 1 spell in Hong Kong. Adelaide took the risk and we didn't... Adelaide will be rewarded and we won't.

The 2 final candidates alongside Lowe may've been beaten on the cost-benefit assessment... but there were 50 candidates and I think most fans would've probably taken just about any of them over a guy with only local league experience and a pretty dismal record as caretaker. And I doubt all 50 would've demanded $1mil+living costs+choice of marquee player.

Yeap! =d> Certainly seems that way. :/

Perhaps too optimistic, too soon - As ATE has just mentioned - seemsm like boomerangs, both McGarry and Burns are set to swing right back into the Glory fold, via the coaching ranks. :/

TBRH If anything, that troubles me far more than the 'confirmation' of Lowe and process surrounding that! It's not like we lack the strong alternatives out West, including former Glory legends - a number who have been about the Glory coaching staff a number of seasons now? I can understand seeking to groom McGarry, if he's 'soo exceptional' but another green one, the controversial Burns no-less - It's ridiculous and rewarding two players who were part of the problem in regards to the team's downturn this season. It's like when they 'promoted' poor performing coach, Dave Mitchell, to TD!

Yet, Harnwell, Naven, Chris Coyne and co remain working with the NPL, NYL, W-League teams or in the State League. Despite some of them having been working in those roles, with the club (Doing their 'apprenticeships'), for seasons now?

And will Burns and McGarry be a 'condition' for any future Head Coach appointments too?! Heck, maybe another reason why Arnie and whoever turned Glory down?! :-k

I disagree with where he said Perth Glory fans are notoriously fickle, I think we have one of the most loyal fanbases in the A-league.

NPL. Glory 2 - 0 Sorrento at half time. I'm told first goal was a Maclaren penalty (I missed first 20 mins). 2nd was a mis-hit cross from Woodcock into top corner that lobbed the keeper.

Rocco Pizzato off with what looked like a broken arm/wrist. Good game to watch. Duncan in goal for Glory has made two good reflex saves - admittedly hit straight at him. Da Silva also playing as are O'Brien, O'Neill, Davies, Cam Edwards.

Finished 3-2 to Sorrento. Glory down to for last 20 mins when Edwards came off with injured ankle and all subs made.

Maclaren missed a good chance after he did really well to go around keeper one on one but his left foot shot from tight angel hit the post. Sub Joe Knowles had a great late chance but hit his shot straight at the keeper.

A draw would have probably been the fair result. Sorrento early goal in second half lifted their intensity. Very physical side with a centre half who is at least 6'9". Their third goal came from a long throw which he flicked on.

Pretty poor refereeing. Ref was the short arse linesman who runs the line in front of the eastern stand at NIB. Can't control the game and got no help from his linos who ignored stuff right in front of them.

Thanks for all the updates! Did Vitigglia impress?

Like that from Portsmouth guy (Higgins?), he was overseas before. Reckon he should have got a look in at least on a basic contract in the Fergie era.

Just warms the Glory heart reading these sums of money. One hopes we have learnt from the past, but -

Hersi remains tight-lipped on where he's headed next season with Perth Glory widely reported to have penned a deal with the Dutchman.
The 31-year-old former Ajax star admits he wanted to stay at the Wanderers but could not agree terms with the club, which was reportedly unwilling to offer the more than $500,000 contract he requested.

Vittiglia looked sharp and was hard in tackles. Could see him in a McGarry type role in midfield. Grabbed two goals, first a tap in, second a volley in the box from a flicked on long throw.

Yeah. Can only hope, and that's a loose use of the word, that would have to be over 2 year, which means he's basically on the "Dodd" contract. Because overpaid experienced player worked out so well there!

All confirmed in the Sunday Grimes this morning. Been in negotiations for 8 months.

Not sure about how he'll do. Can he play a central MF role?? Thought Glory had an abundance of riches out wide. What they need is a play making attacking MF.

But it fits in with Glory's player scouting and player development. Go after other A-league club's sloppy seconds, preferably over 30 and make sure youth are released so they can be given more opportunities and become stars at other clubs. :-&

Exactly Hotrod.
Where is our play making attacking midfielder for this sort of money?
Glory prattle on about identifying the 25 - 30 year old missing players in our group.
So we straight away throw obscene money at another outside this group.
10,000 fans can tell you we need a play maker every day of the week.
They list Hersi as a Midfielder, but I was too young to see the last time he set something up.

Maybe it's not everything, but it sure helps.
Look at Brisbane, with Broich - best in the comp, and a couple of other handy guys, one called Miller and also McKay.
Then the Wanderers, with Ono and Mooy.
Oh that's right, they've both only got to the big day.
What did we have? Only about 5 out and out defensive midfielders.

I say it again, but last season was such a success, we seem to be doing everything again, repeatedly, for the 2nd successive season in a row.
Is it really rocket science, or am I missing something too obvious?

He's a winger. Perth Glory have Harold, Sidnei signed up for next season. There's no over-abundance there like this season.

I do think I read something about him preferring to play centrally (#10) but Kenny has his Serb there so I doubt it. If Smeltz signs, Glory can claim to have a "Foreign" front 4 ala Adelaide. Oh course it's a cheap knock-off version. :D

Hersi is just proof that Sage/Brewer saw a player they had a hard on for, discovered he was out of contract, and with no thought have tried to lure him. All this spiel about trying to get good out-of-contract players and needing to do it now...and they get Hersi. :/

Oh, and their backup goalkeeper could be coming over which is even stranger news (~EG mentioned it earlier?)

Totally underwhelming and they would have spent $500K+ to secure him, FFS.

In the wake of yesterday's grand final and WSW "choking" I just thought I'd leave this #nslthrowback here:

Mind you, I don't mean to be kicking you guys after a rough season, just simply reposting a great grand final between my childhood club and your club back when it was the force I wish it still was.

What's the bet the conversation with Arnie went something like this:
Sage: Tell me, Arnie, what's it going to take to get you to coach Perth Glory?
Arnie: I want $300k per season
Sage: maybe, we can come back to that.
Arnie: I want my own staff
Sage: No, we've got great staff. Burns and McGarry. Very good poker players, er I mean, soccer coaches.
Arnie: Get fucked.

Awkward wording; they're trying to say he asked for $500k+, which was not met.
