Álvaro Alexander Recoba Rivero (born March 17, 1976 in Montevideo), nicknamed "El Chino", is a Uruguayan football striker or left Midfielder currently playing for Panionios. He had played in the Italian Serie A since 1997 for ten seasons straight (apart from a six months spell with S.S.C. Venezia) with current Italian champions Internazionale; after a one-year loan to Torino his contract with the Milan side expired on June 30, 2008 and he spent last summer as a free agent. He has 69 caps for the Uruguay national team, with whom he participated at the 2002 World Cup.

Club career
Recoba started his career with Uruguay's Danubio. After several years there in the youth teams, he appeared on the first team at just 16 years old and played seasons 1994-95 where he captured everyone's attention with his marvelous left foot. For the 1996-97 season he was transferred to Club Nacional de Futbol, one of Uruguay's most successful teams. The following season, he was sold to Internazionale.

Notable debut at Inter
Recoba made his debut for Inter on the same day as Ronaldo (31 August 1997), against Brescia in San Siro, scoring two goals in the last ten minutes of the match: one, a powerful 40-yard shot that flew past the keeper, the next, a free kick into the top corner after a Cristiano Doni foul. The goals allowed Inter to come back and win the match 2-1. In the same season, he scored a lob from only a short distance into the opponent's half.

Loan to Venezia
Despite his spectacular start for Inter, he was eventually loaned out to relegation-battling Venezia. It was there that he proved he could play at the highest level, as he was involved in the majority of the goals that the Venice side scored during his time there; he scored 11 times and made 9 assists in 19 matches. His efforts helped Venezia escape relegation that season.

Return to Inter

After his tenure at Venezia, which lasted less than one season, Recoba returned to Inter. In January 2001, he renewed his contract with the club until June 30, 2006. But during the same month he faced problems with a fake passport, losing the Italian nationality he received in 1999. He was punished with a one-year ban, which was later reduced to four months on appeal.[1]

Recoba has had other notable performances for Inter, an example being the 2004–05 Serie A match against Sampdoria on January 9, 2005 in which he entered the game as a 32nd-minute substitute for Adriano. In the 42nd minute of the second half with Sampdoria leading 2–0, he hit the post. He then fed the ball to Obafemi Martins who scored to bring Inter back into the game; this was followed three minutes later by an equaliser from Christian Vieri, and in the last minute of stoppage time, Recoba scored Inter's third goal in six minutes to snatch a 3–2 win.[2]

On March 16, 2007 Recoba confirmed to SKY Italia that he wanted to leave the team at the end of the 2006–07 season citing lack of appearances with the first team.[3] He was initially linked with Inter's scudetto rivals A.S. Roma after he claimed that if the opportunity arose and Inter president Massimo Moratti approved he would join the capital club immediately.[4] On August 31, 2007 he was loaned to fellow Serie A club Torino F.C. where he rejoined Walter Novellino, his previous boss at Venezia.[5]

Torino
Recoba scored his first goal for the club in the second match of the season, a 1–1 draw with Palermo, after a good combination between himself and Alessandro Rosina.[6] On December 19, 2007 Recoba gave a top-class performance against A.S. Roma in the Coppa Italia, scoring two excellent goals in Torino's 3–1 win.[7] However, his performances have been disappointing due to injuries and lack of playing time; he has not made the expected impact despite a good start and finished the season out of the starting formation.[8]

Panionios
Recoba signed for Panionios of the Greek Super League on the 5th of September 2008, making him one of the clubs biggest signings in recent history. He will join former Inter team mate and close friend Lambros Choutos. He made his debut by the p.t. Fabio Martella against Aris on October 18, 2008 in a 2-1 win for Panionios F.C.. He proved his quality by assisting both goals for his teammates Maniatis and Gonzaga. In his next match, he inspired Panionios to a 5-2 away win against Ergotelis where he scored two goals, and dominated as an attacking midfielder with his brilliant passing skills.[9]

National team
Recoba played for Uruguay at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and has earned over 50 caps for his country. His only goal at the tournament came against Senegal in Uruguay's final group game, but it was not enough as the match finished in a 3-3 draw and eliminated Uruguay in the first round.

In September 2005, he scored the winning goal against Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. This helped Uruguay qualify as South America's fifth placed team and put them in position to play for the intercontinental playoff against Oceania champions Australia. However, Uruguay was unsuccessful in its bid for World Cup 2006; losing 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a draw in aggregate score.

Despite the lack of appearances for Inter, he was again picked for the Uruguayan national team. This allowed Recoba to play in most of the Uruguay matches for which he was healthy. He scored his 12th goal with the Uruguayan national team in a 2-1 victory on June 2, 2007 in a friendly match against Australia.

Recoba also played for Uruguay in Copa América 2007.

Playing style
Recoba's strengths are his dribbling, technique, pace and a strong, accurate left-foot shot. He is a free-kick specialist, and has scored goals of great quality, examples of which were his two goals during his debut with Inter, and basically all the goals scored during his time at Venezia.

Recoba is known for being a player who could have been one of the world's greatest, but he always seemed to fall short because of his constant injuries. He was in the 1998/1999 season the greatest player in the world but with his poor consistency, he could never hold onto that title or his salary which was the highest in the world [10]. He was perhaps summed up best in a 2003 Guardian article. The reporter commented that few, if any, have been born with Recoba's ability; however, his mentality continues to fail him at the most crucial moments - he continued by comparing Recoba with Real Madrid's Raul, whom he stated has only half or even a quarter of Recoba's ability and technique, but the mentality of a true champion. In a situation where Recoba loses his heart for the match, Raul's mentality serves only to heighten his workrate and focus his skills. As a result of this Recoba has featured as a substitute in recent seasons, though few would question his ability to turn match when he is on form. It is as a result of these particular short-comings that Recoba is unfortunately not a world renowned name in modern day football, despite having ability that few have had in the past or present.

Based on the colours of the new logo, perhaps we won't see the deep dark purple jerseys that we have seen in the past 4 seasons. The lighter purple stripes look like they are more credible now. It's a pity, because i really liked how Perth wore the dark purple at home, in a way it was very intimidating to the visiting team.

But as for the logo, i personally don't mind it, its a bit re-freshing, but then again, i'm not a Perth supporter. All the teams seem to be going for that shield badge now. One wonders if the Roar will follow suite when they officially announce the change from 'Queensland' to 'Brisbane'.

I've got a feeling that out of all these rumours, we'll only end up getting one out of three in Denilson, Todd and Recoba. And I have a feeling it might be Todd.

Todd has been sort of confirmed by the club (offical myspace [i know thats crap they should confirm it on their website, but I think that they are saving all this stuff for one big press conference, which would reveal their strip, socceroo, guest player, and marquee]).

And remember, Denilson is classed as a guest player so he isn't included in the salary cap, Recoba could be our marquee, Todd will probably be on about $150,000-$200,000 or have an additional service agreement which is what Dadi has this season. With that the club has said that they'll pay him say $40,000 (minimun) to play, but then they'll pay him maybe $60,000 to promote the club in the community. Same thing could be done for Todd and even our Socceroo. From memory, i think that you can have $500,000 on additional service agreements. Sage has probably done something like that to get the most players that he can in.

Also in today's paper it says that if WA votes no in the daylight savings referendum that the Glory's matches would be brought forward by one hour.

That would mean:

Fri 9 OCT 09 vs. Adelaide United 7.30pm would be 6.30pm
Sun 1 NOV 09 vs. Melbourne Victory 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Sun 22 NOV 09 vs. Sydney FC 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Sun 6 DEC 09 vs. Queensland Roar 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Sat 26 DEC 09 vs. Newcastle Jets 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Sun 10 JAN 10 vs. Sydney Fc 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Fri 22 JAN 10 vs. Wellington Phoenix 8.00pm would be 7.00pm
Sun 31 JAN 10 vs. Central Coast Mariners 5.00pm would be 4.00pm
Sat 13 FEB 10 vs. Queensland Roar 5.00pm would be 4.00pm

So Perth Glory Fans vote YES!

PERTH'S three rectangular football codes will be under threat if a $73m upgrade of Members Equity Stadium does not get the go-ahead.

The Western Force has already decided to move from Subiaco Oval to cut its $3m a year losses.

But debts will continue to build unless Members Equity is expanded from an 18,000 to 25,000 seater arena and there is an upgrade in all facilities including corporate boxes, players change rooms and medical facilities and lighting.

Perth Glory, already based at Members Equity, said it faces an annual $1.5m loss to bring facilities up to A-League and Asian Championship requirements.

And the emerging WA Reds rugby league side that is hoping for an National Rugby League club to be based in Perth said also said the NRL would need better facilities before making a decision on a new franchise.

The three clubs, jointly releasing the long awaited consultants report on the future of Members Equity today, said that when competing against live broadcasts it important to have the best facilities available to attract people from their lounge rooms.

Force chief executive Greg Harris said: "The upgrade is crucial to the viability of the Western Force.

"It is as simple as that."

He said acknowledgement by the state government that it was willing to go ahead would be a huge bonus.

"We would need an indication by June this year so that preliminaries could begin,"he said.

"It does not have to be included in the May budget."

Perth Glory chief executive Scott Gooch said said the present stadium did not meet requirements and an uprgade was necessary to encourage a growth in sponsorship and membership.

And Reds general manager Bill Nosworthy said NRL teams had been impressed with the basics of the stadium but an upgrade was important.

Sport minister Terry Waldron was briefed about the report on Tuesday and would be asking the department of Sport and Recreation to evaluate and analyse its contents.

"The government will then decide what it is going to do," a spokesman said.

"The Premier and minister have made it pretty clear that they want to look at upgrades for Members Equity Stadium but need a fully costed option and business plans."

The spokesman said Mr Waldron had also contacted the Australian Rugby Union about its commitment to the Force and the Federal Government on what funding may be available.

Please make it happen. We need this stadium to be good to allow international matches to be played here in Perth. I would much rather a rectangular stadium than Subiaco Oval.

and they could do it in the season it wouldn't make much of a difference.
the only thing would it would make it seem like we have more fans during the renos.

Just like whats happening with Newcastle in their champions league matches! Not sure how long it would take, you think that they could do it in stages, so that everyone has as many seats as possible.

Anyway, looks like we'll be playing in Canberra.

Quote:
Canberra Stadium is in line to host two premiership A-League matches this season.
Stadium manager Neale Guthrie confirmed yesterday he was in discussions with Football Federation Australia about hosting two Central Coast Mariners ''home games'' later this year.

The Mariners' games, against Perth Glory on September4 and Adelaide United on October31, need to be moved from the club's home at Gosford due ground maintenance.

Guthrie and Mariners chief executive Lyall Gorman confirmed yesterday that the ACT stadium was an option.

''There is a window where we look like we need to move two games away and we are very happy to have discussions with Canberra and it is one of a few options we are looking at,'' Gorman said.

And the West Australian's take on the tour.

Fantastic for fans. Perfect for players.

That is Perth Glory coach David Mitchell’s verdict on his side’s pre-season friendly in July against soon-to-be English Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves will travel to Perth, where they will be based for 10 days, as English Championship winners after wrapping up the second-tier title with a 1-1 draw at Barnsley on Saturday.

Glory expect the Wolves match to draw a capacity crowd to Members Equity Stadium, and Mitchell said it was also the ideal platform for Glory players to show their determination to lead the club towards a first A-League finals berth.

“Hopefully it will give the players a bit of a launch pad into the season,” Mitchell said of the prospect of facing Wolves, who will rejoin England’s elite competition next season.

“We want to create a bit of excitement this season and playing a Premier League club like Wolves is great. The fact that they’ll spend the whole time in Perth is a bit of a coup for the club.”

Glory are also negotiating to play a game against Fulham about the same time.

Mitchell has spent three weeks in Europe and met Wolves manager Mick McCarthy at the club’s training ground.

The coaches have known each other for some time — McCarthy signed Mitchell to Millwall in 1994 — and the personal link helped during early negotiations to secure the trip.

Mitchell hopes fans will see the potential at the club and come out in force to support the team this season. He praised owner Tony Sage for backing the push to sign quality recruits.

“Since I’ve been in Perth there have been a lot of knockers for one reason or another,” Mitchell said. “But Tony is trying to put things in place to generate excitement around the club.”

Glory are believed to be close to signing Socceroos midfielder Jacob Burns, who is playing in Romania, and Derby County defender Andy Todd.

Mitchell is also hoping to sign a guest player and a marquee for the new campaign, which will feature new franchises North Queensland Fury and Gold Coast United.

McCarthy’s side fell behind to Barnsley in the 58th minute when Jon Macken scored at the second attempt.

But Wolves equalised with six minutes remaining as Kyel Reid was left unmarked at the far post and smashed home a low shot to spark wild celebrations among the travelling fans who poured on to the pitch at full-time.

McCarthy said the pitch invasion had soured the chance to revel in his team’s achievement.

“I wasn’t best pleased about it,” he said. “Somebody tried to jump on my back and I don’t know if it was someone who wanted to celebrate with me or what.

“It was unfortunate, it’s mad and it has taken a slight bit of gloss off the achievement.

“I would have liked us to have applauded the fans and celebrate with them but the invasion prevented us doing that.”

Just a question for any Glory supporters out there - I have been a member sitting on the East side of MES for the last 3 years. Looking at this years fixtures, the sun is going to be a massive problem for viewing, especially in the heat of December, January. I am looking at perhaps changing seats to go to the West side, so that I will be in the shade for those twilight matches (or at least with the sun on my back). The only thing I'm worried about is what the atmosphere is like on that side - cause I love being on the East side right now, with all the Glory supporters, like on the Outer, and am just making sure that the West side is the same - you know, filled with passionate people. Gotta have the atmosphere above everything, IMO. Also, for anyone who does sit there, is the viewing still great? Thanks for any feedback guys.

I would love to, but as I take my 12-year old sister along too, it obviously isn't possible.

maybe stay on the east side where u are then?

Personally Im always in the shed (right side of course), but previously was on the west end ... its great for viewing, when i was in seats, i liked to sit in the third between the middle and the shed, just so that ur close to the shed, and the positioning is still good haha

I used to sit in W8 a few years ago... nothing wrong with the atmosphere there really, I mean there were a few older fans around me who tended to be a bit quieter, but that didn't stop me or other passionate fans from making ourselves heard.

The other advantage of the West side is you can yell at the opposition coaches (or your own, in the Ron Smith days...)

How about in front of the shed? There will be a few people making a bit of noise there this season! \:d/ =d> \:d/

Top notch pre-season practiceTuesday, 28 April 2009 by Paul Barbieri, perthglory.com.au / Sportal Perth Glory defender Scott Neville believes the club’s mouth-watering pre-season clashes against English Premiership opponents will be an invaluable learning experience for him and his new team mates ahead of the Hyundai A-League season.

Neville is one of a number of young guns recruited by Perth for the 2009/10 campaign and is jumping out of his skin at the prospect of tackling the top-shelf talent heading to WA.

Perth are scheduled to play the newly promoted EPL side Wolverhampton Wanderers in July and are working to secure another match against a top-flight team in what is shaping to be a football feast for Glory supporters and players alike.

"It should be entertaining and exciting," said Neville.

"The striker for Wolves, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, he's scored 25 goals this year, it should be interesting to see how good he really is, see his movement off the ball and how fast he is.

"That's what you strive for, to play against those types of players and just try to learn as much as you can. I want to soak in as much information from them because they're obviously pros at the highest level and that's what you’re aiming to achieve," Neville said.

Wolverhampton wrapped up its promotion to England's top tier after securing the Championship crown last weekend and will use the trip to Western Australia as a key pre-season platform from which to launch their assault on the EPL.

The games will also be instrumental in Glory’s 2009/10 preparations as a new look squad hits the field for the West Aussie outfit this season. Neville is one of a new breed of players hungry for success at Perth and few would argue he has the potential to help the Glory achieve a finals spot this season.

Neville was Glory’s 2008/09 National Youth League player of the year and burst onto the Hyundai A-League scene in sensational style with a stunning debut that help inspire a 3-2 home win against eventual Champions Melbourne.

The 20 year old has even more reason to be excited about taking on the international visitors in July after being placed in cotton wool for the month to overcome groin soreness.

"It was just overuse," admitted Neville. "I'd played two or three seasons straight and there was just some moderate impact on the groin around the bone."

"I played a lot of games and was training twice a day last year and I'm still growing so it affected the groin a bit and it basically just needed a rest.

"Luckily it happened right at the end of the season so I could just rest it and make sure I do everything right so now that it's time to come back to training it's good again."

It has been an impressive rise through the ranks for Neville and the youngster hopes his experiences can be a beacon for the many other talented players in the state who are chasing their football dream.

"It's just awesome, anything can happen in football," he said.

"You can have a couple of good games and get spotted and the Youth League is just such a good chance for everyone that plays in it to shine and get their chance in the first team."

"It's just a great opportunity for everyone," he said.
