Usually we make it to the 1st game before we get to this point.

A couple of us may recall hearing that phrase on previous occasions - like 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, I'll stop there.
As far as I'm concerned, the coach is professional (ok, use that term loosely), the players are professional footballers, and so on, so they can sort themselves out and get on with being a professional outfit that can play together. I'm sure they must learn something about who is who at training sessions all week for weeks on end.
Why is it only in football (soccer) and Glory in particular, the team needs to gel? I never hear it in any other team sports and they all manage.
Next thing you know, Kenny will start rattling that one off.
Glory should really take note of how Ross the boss Lyon conducts his setup - "we are a no excuses football club".
End of story.

Actually lolling at the stupidity of this....

Never hear other teams.... Hmmm

You mean like when ange took over Brisbane roar and reassembled the team and they were shocking for the early part until they turned into the best team the league has ever seen?
Or maybe when he went to victory and did a similar thing.... Everyone slamming them early then they were coming good and played a large factor in why ange got the aus job.

Or how about your opponents today... Adelaide last season, when they were getting pumped left right and centre at the start of the season only to be in the race for top 2 a few months later....

Oh and then there is wsw who couldn't even score a goal for a month or so and then finished top.... Hmmm that was them needing time to gel wasn't it?

Need I go on? Yeah didn't think so....

Yes you will find cases for your argument as well. But mate, honestly. It's pre season, you didn't have half of your first 11 playing. when you did have half of them on you drew with one of the better teams from last year by all reports... Which mind you is an improvement?

So how about you wait for players to be together for more than a week or two, see how your first eleven actually lines up (because they haven't yet) and judge them throughout the season if not at seasons end.

I do get your point of view and I get that you have had overhauls before and a lot of poor coaches come through. But at least with this overhaul of the squad you seem to have better balance, the players are at a much better age and you have depth. I'm hoping it is time to gel, but of course there is a chance you are right and it will be another squad overhaul failure and that will 100% rest on the coach.

Also just wanted to add that you can't really compare soccer to other sports because transfers are more frequent. Eg... Perth essentially have 50% player turnover. When has an afl club like freo ever done that.., ever brought in 20 odd players in the off season. And even if they did, the majority would be draftee's and rookies... So the effect on the starting 22 would never be more than 4 or 5 players.

In glory's case... Keogh, zadkovic, djulbic, hersi, nicholls, Garcia are all likely starters for mine. So that's 6 of a starting 10. Compared to afl which at most ever would be 5 of 22, and no one takes pre season seriously in afl like you shouldn't be to an extent with this match, which mind you, I highly doubt you watched.

Glory may use it from their bad of tricks far too often, but have heard 'need to gel' before and hey, you're going to be more effective playing with someone you know inside and out, to a complete stranger, so that takes time (which is now).

It seems I’m on a roll with stupid comments Tambo, so don’t stop me now.

In no time I too will be lolling about with made up words. It would be too easy just to go back to your first post where you say “Not a Glory Fan” and leave it at that. But I won’t mention that as I want to rise above it and never stoop that Lowe.

You are correct however in that I didn’t make the Perth to Sideney return trip for this friendly, just haven’t really quite got that enthused just yet. I had bigger weekend activities, and instead stayed in Perth where I caught up with my ironing for the working week. I have though relied on any snippets of information that dribble through, and the overwhelming report seems to be that Glory not only fail to trouble the opposition goalkeepers, but that they are not even creating chances. I’ve heard nothing about general play, formations, who is stepping up and looking the goods for a big season, and so on.
Feel free to give me your full match report as I'm sure that will be of great benefit to myself and others.

It’s not much to go on. In the back of my mind I do still hope for a big season.
I will remain forever hopeful.
That hope is based on the sole fact that last season we finished in such a pathetic rabble, we only have 1 direction we can go.
Hardly inspiring.

Next weekend is the Malaga match. A Champion’s League club, probably the only chance to see Santa Cruz on Perth Oval. Fair enough if I’m the only Glory fan not yet inspired enough to grab a $40 ticket, but 15 years on, I’m really struggling with my support.

Right now, it’ll be another Sunday afternoon of ironing, and more hope of seeing Santa Claus than Santa Cruz.

General admission is $30. I am taking the whole family for $60 - not unreasonable to watch a La Liga/Champions League club unless you are looking at everything associated with Glory through shit coloured glasses.

Why are Glory so keen on advertising that there is no gin at this year's games?? #NOTGIVINGIN

Is this slogan more designed for fans ... that is don't give up on the club?? If so it sounds like a desperate plea "stay with us one more year I promise it will better". Which also sounds like a bit of an admission by the Club that their past few seasons have been below par (even the season we made the GF we played largely uninspiring football).

it is a bit crap - reminds me of the Scottish World Cup song that went "Don't come home too soon ... "

The yellow kits on the weekend looked terrible too IMO. Looked like a poorly designed Wellington Phoenix strip. I personally like the WAFL state team strip, and if Perth Glory want to go for that look adopt something similar. I find it ironic that for the FFA Cup they adopt a different strip (especially one that uses state colours in a competition where they are not the only team representing WA).

Are all A-League teams adopting a FFA Cup strp (similar to how they have a different ACL strip)?? Do teams in Europe do this for cup competition?

Don't think so. I think the MLS do it, thus the parroting for revenue.

I think the clubs last two slogans infer that they think the Perth support base are gutless and have given up, so great messages to send to fans.

Haha I rated the Lowe pun. Look, I'm not a glory supporter but iv pretty much watched every one their games for the past few seasons like I have the league. And the fact that I'm a nuetral may bring a more unbiased view... All I'm saying is that it seemed a bit early to be making those sorts of statements considering half your best team wasn't starting and you have just had a complete overhaul of your squad. I made plenty of other points and if we wish to re read my comments then you can.

I hope you guys have a goood season, and I look forward to watching how this new line up sets up and develops over the season.

But these are the same comments this time each year:

Squad had had a complete overhaul
New coach getting use to players
Need time to gel
Struggling to score

All of those are flicking my "not this again" switches.

I hope and I pray that it is not the same this time.

But hoping and praying are not strategies to a successful season.

The one big point missing about Adelaide's early season performances last season was that you could see where they were trying to get to, and you could see that it was coming together (just needed a little more time). The comments raised by hotrod can be used as excuses, however we should be able to see the potential from the start ... the proof will be in the pudding (especially the start of the season).

Still hearing the same comments as 12 months ago.

I don't want to see potential, I want results.

Was happy for lack of results last year as there was a definite long term strategy in place and it was year 1 of a 3 year plan.

The way Lowe has set things up I expect results from the get go and not just eked out ones. There should be good results built on stylish play. The players are supposedly all there (except for a up front target man).

The acid test will be against the Jets in the FFA Cup. They are Glory's charity team. I expect a win away from home.

I do not want to hear excuses from the excuse cliche book after that game.

Not sure, they were still in Edwards phase back then and in South Africa. 24, 36, 48 months ago, sure.

To be fair, Glory have been playing more a 4-2-3-1 system then past few years, so a 4-4-2 is actually a "new Perth system".

Kenny used the 442 diamond late last season, and commented that he had found Sidnei's best position when using it. The Guardian even did an article on it:

Guardian Article Glory's 442 Diamond

So, not surprised to see it.

And he got out of jail big time in that match because of the referee. Both penalties were soft and CCM had a goal called offside incorrectly. Against Newcastle the goals came late when Sidnei came on and they stopped playing the 4-4-2, going back to the 4-2-3-1. But no one has ever accused him on having an imagination, not based on last season.
